allows you to both evaluate and enjoy audio recordings. It meets highest

This manual is intended to provide you with information about your new
ADAM.Itcontainsimportant information regarding safety, setting up,
handling, and warranty.Werequestthatyoureadthesesectionscarefully
toensureeasysetupandpreventpotentialproblems.
TheSub7isacompactsubwoofer.Itisperfectlysuitedforawidevarietyof
multi-channelapplicationsincludingsmallcontrolrooms,desktops,mobile

Please read the following safety instructions before operating this
product. Keep the instructions for future reference. Please heed the
warnings and follow the instructions.
Caution:Toreducetheriskofelectricshock,donotopenthesubwoofer.Therearenouser-
serviceablepartsinside.Pleasereferserviceissuestoqualiedservicepersonnel.
Thisproduct,aswellasallattachedextensioncords,mustbeterminatedwithanearthground
three-conductorACmainspowercordliketheonesuppliedwiththeproduct.Topreventshock
hazard,allthreecomponentsmustalwaysbeused.
Alwaysswitchoffyourentiresystembeforeconnectingordisconnectinganycables,orwhen
cleaninganycomponents.
Donotusethisapparatusnearwater.Donotexposethisproducttorainormoisture,neverwet
theinsidewithanyliquidandneverpourorspillliquidsdirectlyontothisunit.Pleasedonotput
anyobjectslledwithliquids(e.g.vases,etc.)ontothespeaker.
Alwaysusefullycheckedcables.Defectivecablescanharmyourspeakers—andyourself!Also,
theyareacommonsourceforanykindofnoise,hum,cracklingetc.
Neverexposethisproducttoextremelyhighorlowtemperatures.Neveroperatethisproductin

Alwayskeepelectricalequipmentoutofthereachofchildren.

Assurefreeairowbehindthespeakerstomaintainsufcientcooling.

3. Information for Set Up
Important information for set up
Acclimation:
Afterhavingunpackedyoursubwoofer,pleaseallowthesystemtoacclimate
tothetemperatureoftheroomforapproximatelyanhour.
Solid stand:
Itisimportanttoensurethesubwoofersitsrmlyonasolidsurface!
Transportation/packaging:
Werecommendthatyouretaintheoriginalpackaging,asitisthebestwayto
guaranteesafetransportationshouldtheneedtodosoarise(see).
Break-in time:
Please note that the subwoofers will take some break-in time to achieve
optimumsonicperformance.
Danger from high SPLs:
Exposure to high sound pressure levels may cause permanent hearing
loss!Pleasedonotgetclosetothesubwooferswhenusingthemathigh
volumes.
Placement:
Pleasenote,thatforaseamlessintegrationbetweenthesubwooferandthe
mainspeakers,placementisveryimportant(seep.7).
LEDs:
TherearetwoLEDsonthefront,oneoneachpotentiometer.
Theleftonewillblinkafewtimesredwhenthesubwooferisbeingswitched
on. This does not indicate an overload but the control function of the
protectivecircuit.Onlyifthediodeashesredduringoperationthisindicates
anoverload.Afterwards,thediodeglowsgreen.
Therightdiodewillglowgreenduringoperationandyellowduringstand-by
(signal-on-mode,see6.2).

4. Quick Start / Connection
Before connecting the subwoofers to your audio components and the
power source make sure that both the subwoofer and your audio system
are switched off and set the level controls fully counterclockwise.
Input
Connecttheleftandrightline-levelsignalfrom
yoursignalsource(preamplier,mixer,etc.)to
the LEFT and RIGHT INPUT jacks. Use either
XLR(balanced)orRCA(unbalanced)cables.In
mostprofessionalapplicationsXLRwillbethe
bestchoice,whileRCAismorecommoninHiFi
applications.
Satellite Out
Connect the LEFT and RIGHT SATELLITE OUT
jacks to the inputs of the left and right main
powered speakers or the inputs of the amps
poweringthemainspeakers.
Checkifthespeciedvoltagematchesthevoltageofthepowersupplyyou
use.Ifthisisnotthecasedonotconnectthesubwooferstoapowersource!
Pleasecontactyourlocaldealerornationaldistributor.
Ifthevoltagesmatch,usetheincludedpowercablestoconnectthesubwoofer
totheACsockets.
Switchonthemainon/offswitchesonthebackpanelofthesubwoofers.
Switchonyouraudiosystemandadjustthevolumeofboththeaudiosystem
andthesubwoofercarefully.

5. Subwoofer Placement
Itiscommonknowledgethatlowfrequencies(belowabout100Hz)arenon-
directional,meaningtheycanhardlybelocatedbythelistener.Itis,however,
acommonmisunderstandingthatthereforetheplacementofasubwoofer
doesnotmatter.Itdoesmatter.
Duetothefactthateveryroom(geometry,furniture,etc.)isunique,thefol-
lowingdescriptionsintendtobearstintroductiontothesubject.Theaimis
toassistyoutacklingthemostcommonproblemswithsubwoofersandroom
acoustics,notablyinterferenceandstandingwaves.
Distance to satellites
Inmostsetupsitisadvisabletoplacethesubwoofernottoofarfromthe
satellitestominimizethechanceofInterferences.Interferencemeansthe
superpositionoftwoormorewavesresultinginanattenuation/cancellation
orenhancementofthespecicfrequency/frequencies.
Furthermore,bigrefelexionfacesincloserangeofthesubwoofershouldbe
avoidedifpossible.
Walls/Distance to walls
Generally,everywallinrelativeclosedistancetothesubwooferenhances
itssoundpressurebyabout6dB.Forinstance,placingthesubwooferina
cornerofaroomwillmakeitabout18dBlouder.Itislikelythatthiswillresult
inanimpairmentoftheprecisionofthemusicalreproduction.
Another problem related to the geometrics of the room concerns the so
called‘standing waves’.Thesearesoundwavesbeingreciprocatedbetween
reectingobjects,sothey‘stand’(don’tseemtomove)inbetweentheseob-
jects.Thespeakercontinuestoproducenewwavesthatcombinesitsforce
withtherstwave(s):aviciouscirclethatresultsinlocalimbalancesofthe
particularfrequencies.

wooferareyourears.Therearetworathereasyways:
Youcandetermineyourlisteningspotrstandthencomparethesoundof
thesubwooferatdifferentpositions.
Anotheroptionistoplacethesubwooferatthelisteningpositionandthen
movearound.Whereeverthesoundisthebestthesubwoofershouldbepo-
sitioned.

6. Controls
Onthefrontsideyouwillndtwopotentiometer,oneforthevolumeandone
forthecrossoverfrequency.Boththevolumeandthefrequencycanalsobe
controlledbytheremotecontrol.Ontherearside,therearemorecontrols
(satellitelter,phaseswitch,mode).Thefollowingtipsareintendedtoassist
youatusingthecontrolsinthebestmanner.

Frequency:
Theupperfrequencylimitoftheunitisvariableand
canbesettoanyvaluebetween50and150Hz.
The85Hz marker indicates the recommendation
of Dolby® labs for surround sound settings. In
manycases,aslightlylowercrossoverfrequency
delivers tighter bass response, for typical near-
mideld monitors we recommend 70 to 75Hz
as upper limit (i.e. -3 dB point in the frequency
response).
Please note: If you alter the frequency it is
advisable to try if an alteration of the phase
improves the sound quality.

Phase Switch
WiththePhaseSwitchyoucanalterthephaseofthesubwooferrelativeto
thesatellites.Thatmeanstochangethepolarityofthebassunit.Depending
onthedistancebetweenwooferandsatellites,either0°or180°maybethe
betterposition.
Werecommendtotryoutwhatpositionsoundsbetterwithinyoursystem.
Satellite Filter
Thesatellitesinasystemcanbedrivenfullrangeorwitha85Hzhighpassas
recommendedbyDolby®laboratoriesforuseinsurroundset-ups.
Recommendation:IfpossiblethemainsignalshouldgointotheSubwoofer.
ConnectyoursatellitestotheSubwooferoutput,eitherviaXLRsymmetricalor
RCAasymmetrical.Inmanycases,clarityanddynamicrangeofthespeakers
canbeimprovediftheydonotreproduceverylowfrequenciessincetheydo
nothavetodeliverbigamplitudes.
Foot Switch
Theoptionalavailablefootswitchswitchesthesubooferonrespectivelyoff.
PleasenotethatbyswitchingitoffyoualsoswitchofftheSatelliteFilter.

7. Troubleshooting
ADAMproductsaredesignedandmanufacturedtothehighestqualitystan-
dards.However,ifanyproblemswithyoursubwooferoccur,werecommend
toproceedasfollows:
Problem:Theunitdoesnotwork.
Pleasechecktheconnectionbetweenthesourceofpower(socket)and•
theACjack.
Checkifthesubwooferisswitchedon.•
Makesuretheelectriccircuitworks.•
Problem:TheLEDshowsnormaloperation(green)butthereiseitherno or
only a distorted audio signal.
Checkthevolumesofboththesubwooferandyoursignalsource.•
Checkthewiring.Isthecabledefective?Areallcablesconnectedcor-•
rectly?Ifpossible,checkwithnewcables.
Connect the subwoofer as directly to the signal source as possible•
(pleasemindthevolume!).Isanotherpartofthesignalpath(e.g.mixer,
subwoofer)defective?
Problem:Youhearparasitic noises(likehumming,buzzing,soughing,crack-
ing).
Pleasedisconnectthesignalcables.Ifthenoisesdisappear,checkthe•
signalpath.
Makesurethatallcablesareproperlyconnected,especiallythesignal•
cablebetweenthepreamp/mixingconsole/etc.andthesub.
Ifthenoisescanstillbeheard,checkforotherelectricaldevicescloseto•
thespeakers(mobilephones,switchingpowersupplies,etc.).Ifthereis
nointerferingdevicethesubwooferwillprobablycausetheproblem.
