Replacing the SATA PCI Controller Card
Replacing the internal controller PCI card may be performed by a single
administrator; no tools are necessary.
Caution There are static-sensitive electronics inside the unit. Before you handle any
parts, make sure you are working at a static-controlled workstation and that you are
properly grounded.
Taking the Server Offline for Hardware Modifications
Power down the server before you make any repairs. Improper shutdown may lead to
loss of data or physical harm.
1To start the shutdown process, press the power
button on the front of the server.
The green power LED remains lit until the shutdown
process is complete. DO NOT disconnect the AC
power cord while the LED remains lit.
2After the power LED is off, disconnect the AC power
cord(s) and all other cables from the back of the
server.
3The server is heavy. With the help of an assistant, remove the server from the
rack to a clean surface with ample room to the front and rear.
Removing the Rear Cover Plate
1To release the rear cover plate, turn the locking screw at the rear of the server
counterclockwise until the screw pops loose.

2The cover is seated tightly on the chassis. Standing in front of the server, use the
heel of your hand to deliver a short, forceful thrust to the cover pad on the rear
cover plate of the server.
3Slide the cover off and set it aside.
Removing the Card Cage Assembly
1To disconnect the SATA ribbon cable, unlock the connector, unlock the cable
retainer (mechanism not shown), and then grasping the edges of the connector,
pull it out of its receptacle.
2Position yourself on the left side of the server (side furthest from the AC/power
cord receptacle).
3Pressing the latch at the front of the assembly with one hand while grasping the
assembly with the other, lift the assembly straight up in a strong, even motion.
Note When removing the card cage assembly, do not grasp it by the handle. The
handle is not strong enough to remove the card cage assembly.
4Set the assembly aside.

Replacing the Card Cage
1Position the assembly over the server.
2Make sure the rear of the assembly is aligned with the guides at the rear of the
chassis and lower the assembly into place.
Important! The two locating pins on the mother board must be directly aligned
with the two connections on the assembly.
3Place your hands on either side of the card cage assembly handle, one hand near
the rear of the assembly and the other over the fan protectors (refer to illustration
above). Secure the assembly by using both hands to press down firmly until you
hear it click into place.
4Using the index finger and thumb, firmly grasp the edges of the SATA cable
connector and insert it into the receptacle.
5Secure the locking mechanism on the connector.
