AW00130404000 Quick Installation Guide for Basler dart Cameras

Basler dart 1

1 Introduction

The installation procedures in this guide assume that you want to get your Basler dart USB 3.0

camera operational as quickly and as simply as possible.

Depending on the dart camera variant, the installation procedures vary.

The following basic assumptions are made for all dart cameras:

That you will be using a PC equipped with one of the following operating systems:

That a USB 3.0 port is installed in your PC and your dart camera will be connected to it.

That your USB 3.0 host controller chipset is compatible with the dart USB 3.0 camera. For

recommendations, see Section 1.2 on page 2.

That you will be installing the Basler pylon Camera Software Suite on your computer.

That there is no previously installed pylon software on your PC.

If old pylon software is installed, uninstall it.

Windows 7 (32 bit) Windows 7 (64 bit)

Windows 8.x (32 bit) Windows 8.x (64 bit)

All Basler dart USB 3.0 cameras are USB 2.0 backward compatible. However,

functionality and data transmission rate of the camera will be limited if

connected to a USB 2.0 port.

For information about suitable USB 2.0 host controllers and about optimizing

the USB 2.0 data transmission rate, see the application note Recommended

USB 2.0 Host Controllers for Basler dart and pulse Cameras (AW001344). You

can download the document from the Basler website: www.baslerweb.com

1.1 General Preparations

The following items must be available before starting installation:

A Basler dart USB 3.0 camera. Three variants are available:

dart bare board,

dart CS-mount, and

dart S-mount.

If you want to use I/O signals: an I/O cable that meets the requirements indicated in the Basler

dart User’s Manual for USB 3.0 Cameras (AW0001305).

A USB 3.0 cable.

A PC with USB 3.0 port. The port can be realized via a mainboard-based host adapter or via a

separately installed host adapter card. For recommendations, see Section 1.2.

Internet access

If you have access to a storage device containing all required drivers, you do not need Internet

access.

Depending on the application you use the Basler dart camera in, you may also require the following

items:

Mounting devices

Cooling devices

A suitable lens.

Contact your Basler sales representative to order suitable cable assemblies.

1.2 USB 3.0 Host Controller

Recommendations

Basler recommends the following host controller chipsets as they work well with Basler USB 3.0

cameras:

Renesas USB 3.0 host controller chipsets

The Renesas chipsets are for example used on ASUS PCIE USB3 host adapters.

Intel Ivy bridge host controller chipsets.

Evaluations of other USB 3.0 host controller chipsets are continuously updated. Contact Basler

technical support for the latest information about other recommended chipsets.

For more information, see the USB 3.0 Host Controllers' Maximum Bandwidth Measurements

(AW001260) application note on the Basler website.

2 Installation Procedures

2.1 Software Installation

2.1.1 Installing the Basler pylon Camera Software

Suite

1. If you have old Basler pylon software installed on your system, make sure to uninstall the

software. For more information about uninstalling Basler pylon software, see the Installation

and Setup Guide for Cameras Used with Basler pylon for Windows (AW000611).

2. Make sure all cameras are disconnected from your computer.

3. Download the appropriate installer from the Basler website (www.baslerweb.com) to a local

directory on your computer:

If you are using a 32-bit Windows operating system, download the installer

Basler pylon x86 x.x.x.xxxx.exe.

If you are using a 64-bit Windows operating system, download the installer

Basler pylon x64 x.x.x.xxxx.exe.

4. Close all open applications.

5. Launch the downloaded installer.

6. In the Setup Wizard, on the Welcome page, click Next.

7. On the License Agreement page, accept the agreement and click the Next button.

8. On the Customer Information page, enter the appropriate information and click the Next

button.

9. On the Destination Folder page, determine the directory where you want to install the

software to and click the Next button.

Before installing Basler pylon software, make sure the Windows Update service is

active. Otherwise, the Basler pylon software can’t be installed.

10. On the Custom Setup page, a list of program features is displayed.

a. Deselect the features of the pylon software that you do not want to install.

b. Only select those features of the pylon software you want to install.

The example shown below assumes that you install the 64-bit version of the Basler pylon

software, that you will only use USB 3.0 cameras, and that your applications and software

development only use C++.

11. Click the Next button.

12. On the Ready to Install the Program page, click the Install button.

13. On the Setup Wizard Completed page, click the Finish button.

The installation program has added shortcuts on the desktop for the pylon Viewer and the

14. Check the installed software features:

Windows 7: Click Start > All Programs > Basler > pylon 4 Camera Software Suite.

Windows 8 or 8.1: Right-click on the bottom-left corner of the screen, then click Search to

open the Apps view. You can find the installed software features in the Basler group.

The Basler pylon software installation is complete.

The deselected software features will not be installed. However, if you want

you can easily install them later.

Before proceeding, close all applications needing a network connection.

Otherwise, the network connections for your applications will temporarily be

lost.
