For the 150mm model:

9c. Connect the optical tube assembly (A) to the

assembled base. You’ll need to connect the tube rings

to the tube ring mounting plate on the base. Use

the screws and lock washers already installed in the

rings to do this. It will be easiest to first remove the

rings from the optical tube to assemble them onto the

mounting plate. Fully unthread the tube ring knobs and

open the rings to remove the tube.

For the 114mm model:

9a. Connect the optical tube assembly (A) to the

assembled base.Fully unthread the clamping knob on

the cradle and open the cradle. Place the optical tube

in the cradle as shown, close the cradle, and retighten

the clamping knob until secure.

8. Install the eyepiece rack (F1) by placing the keyholes in

the rack over the mounting screws pre-installed in the

side panel, then push the rack downwards.

NOTE: If you want to remove the rack for storage or

transport, simply pull it upward.

POINTING THE TELESCOPE

The tabletop Dobsonian base is an altazimuth mount, which

means it moves the telescope in two directions: up-and-

down (i.e., altitude) and left-to-right (i.e., azimuth) (Figure 2).

ALTITUDE

AZIMUTH

Figure 2: StarSense Explorer Tabletop Dobsonians have two axes of

motion: altitude (up-and-down) and azimuth (left-to-right).

Pointing your SSE Tabletop Dob at an object is easy. Simply

move the telescope tube up-and-down and left-to-right

until it is pointing toward the desired object, and the object

appears in the telescope’s eyepiece.

For the 150mm model, the panning knob at the front of

the telescope tube provides a convenient place to grasp the

tube for pointing (Figure 3). Using this knob also prevents

heat from your hand from entering the optical path, which

can temporarily distort the view.

Figure 3: Grasp the panning knob on the 150mm SSE Tabletop Dob when

pointing the telescope.

You can adjust the tension along the altitude axis by turning

the altitude tensioning knob (Figure 4).

Figure 4: Adjust the tension of the altitude axis with the altitude tensioning

knob.

Turn the knob to add enough tension to provide a smooth

up-and-down motion. Under most circumstances, you

won’t need to add much tension. However, if you are using

a heavy eyepiece, you may need to add more tension so the

telescope remains still when not touched.

Ensure the telescope is balanced front-to-back in the rings

or cradle for the best performance. Slightly loosen the

clamping knob(s) on the tube rings or cradle and move

the telescope forward or back until it is balanced. Then

retighten the clamping knob(s) (Figure 4a).

ENGLISH I 9

Figure 4a: To balance the telescope, move it forward or back in the rings

If you are using a very heavy eyepiece, first try tightening

the altitude tensioning knob. If the telescope still doesn’t

have enough tension or becomes hard to move, rebalance

the telescope.

FOCUSING

Your SSE Tabletop Dobs features a 1.25” rack-and-

pinion focuser. To use a 1.25” eyepiece, simply place it

in the focuser and tighten the thumbscrews to secure the

eyepiece in place.

To focus, turn the focus knobs clockwise or

counterclockwise until the object in the telescope

eyepiece is in sharp focus.

Figure 5: Secure the 1.25” eyepiece in the focuser with the thumbscrews.

Since the SSE Tabletop Dob is a Newtonian reflector, the

images appear upside-down compared to the naked eye

(Figure 6). While this has little impact on astronomical

observation, it can be a bit confusing when you are viewing

land-based objects.

NAKED EYE VIEW

Figure 6: Like all Newtonian reflectors, the SSE Tabletop Dob produces

images that appear upside-down compared to the naked eye.

ROTATING THE OPTICAL TUBE

You may want to rotate the optical tube relative to the base

for a more comfortable, ergonomic viewing position. To do

so, slightly loosen the clamping knob(s) on the cradle or

tube rings, rotate the tube in the cradle/rings, and retighten

the clamping knob(s) (Figure 6a).

Figure 6a: To rotate the optical tube for a more ergonomic focuser position,

simply loosen the clamping knob(s) on the tube rings or cradle.

USING THE STARPOINTER

Although you won’t need to rely on the StarPointer red-dot

finderscope when using the StarSense Explorer app, it can

help you align the app with the telescope. The StarPointer

also comes in handy when locating objects during the day

since the app only works under the stars at night.

To align the StarPointer, point the telescope at an object at

least a quarter mile away. We recommend aligning during

the day. Choose a distant tree, sign, building, or other

landmark. If you align at night, you can use a streetlight, the

Moon, or a bright star or planet.

Once you have pointed the telescope at the object, ensure

it appears in the eyepiece. Next, turn the StarPointer on

using the LED dial (Figure 7).

LED DIAL

ALTITUDE KNOB AZIMUTH KNOB

Figure 7: The StarPointer red-dot finderscope.

Turn up the brightness level until you can easily see the

red dot. Now, without moving the telescope, use the

StarPointer’s altitude and azimuth adjustment knobs to

center the red dot on the same object you centered in

the telescope eyepiece. When you’re finished, ensure the

object is still centered in the telescope eyepiece. If it is,

you have aligned the StarPointer successfully. If not, move

the telescope so the object in the telescope’s eyepiece is

centered again. Use the StarPointer’s altitude and azimuth

adjustment knobs to center the red dot on the object again.

Turn off the StarPointer when you aren’t using it to conserve

its battery. While the StarPonter’s battery should last a long

time, you’ll need to replace it with a CR2032 3V Lithium

button cell battery eventually. These batteries are easy to

find at a variety of retailers.

To replace the battery:

1. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the battery

cover securing screw (Figure 8).

Figure 8: To open the StarPointer’s battery cover, first remove the

securing screw.

2. Remove the discharged battery from the battery com-

partment. You may need a knife or screwdriver to pry the

battery out of its holder.

3. Insert the new battery so that the positive side is visible

to you. Ensure the battery is seated correctly within the

battery compartment (Figure 9).

Figure 9: When the battery is properly seated in the compartment as

shown, the battery cover should be easy to reinstall.

4. Close the battery compartment and reinstall the securing

screw.
