Introduction
CDS-5DismodifiedCanonEOS5DMarkIII.Youcancontrolthecameraandtakeimagesby
using a PC connected to the camera with a USB cable. The image sensor can be cooled
maximum -38C below ambient by the installed TEC cooling module to minimize noise of
pictures.Youwillbeabletotakeastronomicalimagesofbreathtakingquality.

Camerausages
YoucancontrolthecameraonlybyusingaPCconnectedtothecamerawithaUSBcable.Youcantake
pictures,changesettingsandsaveimagestothePCbythismethod. Youcannotcontrolthecamera
withouta PCconnectedtothecamera. Youwillgetusedto thiscameraandunderstandthe camera
betterwhilereadingthismanualandtakingtestimages.Pleaseread‘Handlingcaution’and‘Safetyofthe
userandthecamera‘thoroughlytopreventanyaccidentsordamagestothecamera.

Cameraoperationandresponsibility
WeprovideaSDmemorycardtosaveimageswiththecamera.CentralDSwillnotberesponsibleforany
inconvenienceor lossduetofailureof storingimagestothe SDcardordefectiveimages storedinthe
card.
Youcanusethiscameraforpersonaluseanywhereintheworld.
Handlingprecaution
•This camera is a high precision device. Please do not drop and
avoidanyphysicalimpactagainstcamera.
•Thiscameraisnotwaterproof.Ifyoudropthecamerainwater,
wipeoffanywaterdropletsfromthecamerawithadryclothand
contactCentralDS.
•Do not leave the camera under the direct sunlight. High
temperaturecandamagethecamera.
•Donotdisassemblethecamera.
•Pleaseuseadustblowertoremovedustsonthefilter.
•Do not disassemble the filter. If the airtight sealing is damaged,
dewcanforminsidethecamera.
•If the camera is disassembled by personnel not authorized by
CentralDS,thewarrantywillbevoided.
•Donotleavethecameraattachedtoatelescopewiththecoolingsystemoffforlongtime.Dewcan
formonthesurfaceofthecameraandthiscandamagethecamera.
•Ifcondensationformsonthecamera,donotusethecamera.
•Ifthecameraissuddenlybroughtinfromthecoldintoawarmroom,condensationmayformonthe
cameraandinternalparts.Topreventcondensation,firstputthecamerainasealedplasticbagand
letitadjusttothewarmertemperaturebeforetakingitoutofthebag.
•Store the camera in a sealed container with desiccants (i.e. Silica gel) or cool, dry, well ventilated
location.
•Imagesensordust–CentralDStestseachcamerawithtestexposurestochecktheimagesensoris
dust free before shipping. However about 2 – 4 % of the customer reported dusts on the image
sensor. If you see marks on your image due to the dusts on the image sensor, please contact
CentralDSforservicing.Donotdisassemblethecameratocleanthedusts.
•Cautionwiththecoolingsystemactivated–theTECcoolingsystemfortheimagesensorisdesigned
to emit substantial amounts of heat to outside. This does not cause any problem on the camera
operationbutaminorburncanbecausedifskiniscontactedwiththecoolingsystemforextended
periodtime.
•Don’t set cooling temperature under -45C. If you cool down the CMOS temperature to
-45Cunder,MicrolensesofImagesensor(=CMOS)willbedestroyed.

InstallingCanon EOS Software"
•You can control basic camera settings and take pictures and movies with a PC connected to the
camerausingEOSutility.
•TheCD-ROMprovidedwiththecameraincludesEOSutility,DigitalPhotoProfessional,ZoomBrowser
EXandPictureStyleEditor.
•DonotconnectthecameratothePCbeforeinstallingthesoftware.
•Please install the new software by following instruction even though the previous version of the
softwareisalreadyinstalledonthePC.Thenewversionwilloverwritethepreviousversion.

Taking Pictures
•Please make sure EOS Utility and BackyardEOS
are already installed on the PC which will be
connectedtothecamerafirst.Youcanoperate
thecamerawith the following instruction.Please
followtheorderoftheinstruction.

1. Connect the 2” telescope
adapter (or the camera lens
adapter)tothecamerabody.
2. Connect the camera to a
telescope (or a camera lens)
securely.
3. Connect the USB cable to the
cameraUSBport.
4. Connect the Temperature
controllertocamera.
5. Connect the DC cable to the
camera’spowerport.
6. Setthecoolingtemperature.
7. PleasemakesureyouroutetheUSBcableandtheDCpowercable
throughthecableholdertoensurereliablecommunicationbetween
thecameraandthePCandpreventanydamagesontheUSBport
byanylooseconnection.
8. Connectthepowercabletothepoweradapter.
9. Turn on the PC with EOS Utility and BackyardEOS installed to
controlthecameraremotely.
10. OncethePCisstarted,plugintheUSBcablefromthecamerainto
thePCandturnonthecamera.
11. RunEOSUtilityfromthePC.
12. Take some test pictures after clicking Camera Settings / Remote
Shooting.!

*Please refer to the EOS Utility instruction manual in the [EOS
DIGITALSoftwareINSTRUCTIONMANUAL]fordetailedusageof
thesoftware.
13. If test photos were not taken properly, please unplug the camera
andchecktheUSBcableconnection.Thenconnectpowercableto
thecameraagainandtakeanothertestpicture.
14. If you successfully took a picture, Check the cooling temperature
ofCMOSsensor.
15. The temperature controller of CDS-5D is PID type and will take
3~15minutestoreachtothetargettemperature.!

*TheTECcoolingmoduleismoreefficientwhentheambienttemperatureishighbuttheefficiencyis
lower when the temperature is low in the winter. This is due to the electricity consumption per
temperaturecharacteristicsofthePeltierelementswhichisoneofthemostimportantpartsinthe
TECcoolingmodule.Asaresult,thecooledimagesensortemperaturemaynotreachto-38Cbelow
ambientinthewinter.!

* The image sensor temperature in BackyardEOS is not the actual sensor temperature but the
temperature at the temperature sensor installed on the PCB circuit board placed 2mm behind the
sensor. Only the image sensor is directly cooled with a cold finger in the CDS-5D.
Thetemperaturevaluedisplayedat temperature controller is from the temperature on CMOS cold
fingerandit’sneartorealCMOStemperatureandthetemperaturethatBackyardEOSisdisplaying
(fromCanonexifdata)isabout3-7Chigherthanthisvalue.!

Run the BackyardEOS program.
16. Close EOS Utility and click the connect button on the top left corner of BackyardEOS. This will
connectBackyardEOSandthecamera.
17. Afterthe camera isconnected to BackyardEOS, clickFrame & Focusbuttonat the centerof the
buttontoolbaronthetopleftpartoftheprogram.
18. Youcanchecktheimagesensortemperatureatthecamerainformationsectiononthetopcenter
areaoftheprogram.!

19. Close BackyardEOS and disconnect the USB cable and the power cable from the camera after
finishingtheimagingsession..
20. Removethecamerafromthetelescope(orthecameralens).
21. Putthelenscaponandputthecamerainacasewithdesiccants(i.e.Silicagel).!
