Description
With the new
WQB OPS
, Weller is again demonstrating its extensive capacity for innovation in the repair
sector and presents a new type of camera
positioning system for the WQB 3000 rework system. Using this
system all common components up to a minimum length of 3 x 3 mm can be reliably and precisely placed on
circuit boards.
The heart of the positioning system is the modern
FireWire
TM
CCD camera
with full digital data transfer. The
high image resolution, the excellent image quality at high rates of movement, and very low image noise
create the prerequisites for universal, precise, and ergonomic component placement. The data transfer from
the camer
a to the PC is made in real time via the IEEE 1394a interface using the OHCI protocol. Distortion
free pictures of the component to be placed can be achieved using the telecentrical objective lens, that s the
prior condition for a precise component placeme
nt.
The component placing software includes a component library from which the component to be positioned is
selected. New components can be very straightforwardly edited and inserted by the user.
With the aid of positioning frames displayed in the live i
mage from the camera, both the circuit board and the
component are aligned independently using the x, y and theta precision drives. On key press the positioned
component will be set down automatically onto the circuit board and the vacuum be switched off.
This
prevents undesired movement of the component during the lift down of the component onto the circuit board.

Safety instructions
Correct usage
The camera positioning system WQB OPS is designed for placing components on circuit boards in
conjuncti
on with the WQB 3000.
Improper usage
The manufacturer accepts no liability for usage other than that described in the operating instructions, or
unauthorised modifications.
These operating instructions and the descriptions contained herein are to be car
efully read; the operating
instructions are to be stored such that they are clearly visible near the system. In addition, the general
warnings from the PC manufacturer and for the WQB 3000 apply. Failure to observe the instructions can
result in accidents
and injury, or damage to the health.
In accordance with the EU declaration of conformity, the WELLER WQB OPS positioning system
meets the basic safety requirements of the directives 89/336/EWG und 73/23/EWG.
3 System requirements
For the usage of the po
sitioning system, a commercial standard PC with the following features is required:
Intel Pentium with at least 1 GHz clock frequency, CD
-
ROM drive
Min. 128 MB RAM
Operating system:
WIN 2000
with SP 4 or higher,
WIN XP
with SP1 or higher
OHCI compliant Fi
reWire interface
Graphic card: recommended resolution 1280x1024, min. 16 bit colour

Commissioning
On initial commissioning of the camera system, it is
imperative
that you proceed in accordance with the
following instructions. The complete installation
of the positioning system is described in detail, set
-
by
-
step,
in chronological order.
4.1

4.2 Commissioning of a FireWire interface card (optional)
If your PC is not yet equipped with a FireWire interface, you have to install a commercial standard
IEEE
1394a
FireWire PCI interface card. The installation of the FireWire
interface card only requires a spare PCI
slot. The interface card is to be fitted in the slot with the PC switched off.
A laptop without FireWire port can be retrofit with a PCMCI FireWire adapter card, but an external power
supply for the camera is requi
red. The suitable camera split cable and the appropriate power supply must be
ordered separately as an accessory (see chapter 8).
Procedure:
Switch off the PC and all equipment connected to it
Unplug all cables from the PC
Discharge yourself before you touch the PCI interface card, e.g., on the metal housing of the PC
Open the PC housing in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions
Choose a suitable PCI expansion slot
Unscrew the cover plate for the slot
Insert the FireWire interface card in an emp
ty PCI slot in the PC
Press the adapter gently but firmly into the slot and check to see that all contacts are fully seated in the
connector
Attach the bracket screws that secure the card to the chassis
Close the PC housing in accordance with the manufactu
rer's instructions
Re
-
fasten all cables to the PC
Switch on the PC and all equipment connected to it
When re
-
booting the PC, a new multimedia controller is automatically detected by the Device Manager. The
installation of the related driver is described i
n more detail in section 4.4.
4.3
Commissioning the camera
Connect the camera on the positioning unit to the PCI interface card using the special cable supplied.
Ensure that the connections are made properly. Via the cable the camera is supplied with po
wer (12 V), the
image data is transferred, and the camera is controlled.
In principle it is also allowed to connect and disconnect the camera with the system running. It is not
necessary to re
-
initialise the camera.

Installation of the image processing software
The SETUP program for the in
stallation of the image processing software is also on the CD
-
ROM, in this
case in the folder:
Start the SETUP program and follow the instructions on the screen. Following completion of the installation
an icon for the positioning software user i
nterface is added to the desktop on the PC.
4.5
Problems during the installation
If you had to install a FireWire interface card in your PC, the card is a
"Plug and Play"
card, i.e. the image
processing software can be started following the installation
of the hardware and software components.
Due to the large variety of available mother boards, BIOS chip sets and graphics cards, it can, however, not
be excluded that in isolated cases problems may occur during or after the installation. Proceed as follow
s:
Has the interface card been fitted to the PC in accordance with the instructions?
Is the camera connected?
Is the camera connecting cabled inserted?
Has the image processing software been installed without problems?
If necessary, you can order a refer
ence list using the service telephone number from chapter 7.3.2, which
contains hardware components tested with our camera system.

Using the "Weller OPS" software
5.1
Introduction
The "Weller OPS" software is a user interface that was developed espec
ially for the WQB OPS camera
positioning system for positioning surface mounted components.
Emphasis was placed on large, easy to use buttons and a clear structure so as to minimise the time required
for familiarisation with the software. In the following
a description of the user interface is given, as well as a
description of all functions.
This software was developed for the FireWire camera series
FWX
and also for the older
CX
camera series in
conjunction with the PCI
-
4129 interface card, and only work
s with this configuration.

Commissioning the digital camera (only CX camera series)
A connected FireWire ca
mera is automatically detected and initialised by the software. The following choice
is only valid for a connected camera of the CX series.
The first time the program is started, there is no
camera set up for image acquisition. Using the
Special
command,
you can choose the camera
type in the
Settings
dialog box. To open (initialise)
the camera, you must make mark it (with a blue
background) on the list and click the "OK" button.
The selected camera is then always opened each
time the program is started.
Following camera types are supported:
CX05c
Colour Digital camera with standard resolution
CX13c
Colour Digital camera with high resolution
For information on the installation of the camera, see section 4.4.
