1 Explanations

1.1 Conditions

All measurements described in the trouble shooting instruction are performed in EFRA.

If the faulty phone is a swap unit with no possibility to start the phone in signal-mode,

it still is possible to make a call by using the ”Go to call processing” under the Misc menu in

EFRA.

It is not needed to flash the phone to enter the test program,

the SW is a combined Signal and Test Software.

The Flashing is performed with the EMMA II application.

Some of the faults can occur in tests without test program, e.g. Go/No Go -tests.

In these cases you have to start the phone with test program in EFRA before starting to

trouble shoot.

The classification of the components and a possible demand of current-, BData-, ADC- and

radio calibration when changing a component are mentioned in separate documents.

There are four different calibrations: current-, BData-, ADC- and radio-calibrations.

Current-, BData- and ADC-calibration are performed in the trouble shooting part of EFRA,

while radio calibration can be found under the icon “Calibrate”.

Some replaces of component demands all three calibrations, other only need one or two of the

calibrations.

2 On/Off, Enter Test Program

2.1 Introduction

If the phone does not start in the radio calibration or trouble shooting part of EFRA,

despite an approved flash programming, go to section 2.2.

2.2 The phone does not start in the test program

Attach a dummy battery and press the On/Off button. Check the top led and the current

consumption.

If the top led starts lightning and the phone consumes 15 – 30 mA, it usually is without fault.

Check your equipment.

Following things are necessary for the phone to start in the test program:

Correct battery voltage.

The current limitation must be set high enough on both outputs of the power supply, 2 A.

The following signal must be at the system connector of the phone: CTMS, CFMS,

VPPFLASH and GND.

An Hardlock connected and installed.

Follow the Start-up instructions in EFRA.

If the fault really is electrical, open the phone and make a visual check of the board.

Make sure there is not any liquid damage or any mechanical damaged at the system

connector.

No further action should be taken for a liquid damaged unit, send it on according to the

local company directives.

Power up the board and start it using the On/Off button.

Measure the voltages VDIG, 2.75 ± 0.10 VDC (C723) and VCORE.DSP, 1.8 ± 0.10 VDC

(C722).

If the voltages are correct, check the 13 MHz clock (B320) and MCLK (N300, pin 52) with

an oscilloscope, the value of the measurements should be 500 mV p-p.

If not, change B320, if the fault still remains the fault probably is due to N700.

Also check D602 (pin 5 and 6) they should be 2.75 ± 0.10 VDC.

If not, check the soldering and resold if necessary.

If the fault still remains the fault probably is due to N700.

Check VBOOST, 4.1 ± 0.10 VDC and VRAD, 3.8 ± 0.20 VDC.

If the measured values are incorrect use the circuit diagram.

2.3 The phone can not be programmed

Makesurethat:

The battery connector not is mechanically or liquid damaged.

The system connector not is dirty, mechanically or liquid damaged.

Replace it if necessary.

No further action should be taken for a liquid damaged unit, send it on according to the

local company directives.

Attach a “dummy battery”. If the phone consumes current immediately, the fault usually

depends on a short circuit of VBATT.

Start the phone with the On/Off button and check the current consumption.

If the phone consumes no current at all when the button is pressed, there probably is

liquid damage. Open the phone and check for liquid damage.

Check the keypads for dirt, mechanically or liquid damage and clean them it if necessary.

If the phone consume more than 30 mA, go to section 2.4.3.

If the phone does not start, try to program it.

If the phone does not start in the flash programmer, go to section 2.4.1.

If the phone can be programmed, but does not start afterwards or is troublesome in the flash

programmer, go to section 2.4.2.

If the phone starts after programming, there is probably no fault, but to eliminate the

possibility of intermittent faults check for bad soldering on the card.

2.4 Measuring at a powered circuit board

2.4.1 Does not start in the flash programmer

Make sure the system connector pads not are mechanically or liquid damaged.

No further action should be taken for liquid a damaged unit, send it on according to the

local company directives.

Attach the board to the fixture and connect the battery voltage and the programming interface.

Check VPPFLASH at X800 pin 3.

The voltage will not be switched on until you have started the phone in the EMMA II-flash,

after the message “TURN ON THE PHONE TO START”.

If the measurements are incorrect the fault is probably found in the test equipment.

Measure the voltages VDIG and VCORE.DSP.

If VDIG is to low, the fault is due to N700.

If VCORE.DSP is too low, change N720, C722 and R732.

If the fault still remains, it is probably due to N700.

If the voltages are correct, check the 13 MHz clock (B320) and MCLK (N300, pin 52 or at

L340 at the side close to N300) with an oscilloscope, the value of the measurements should be

500 mV p-p.

If not, change B320.

If the fault still remains, it is probably due to N700.

Also check D602 (pin 5 and 6) they should be, 2.75 ± 0.10 VDC.

If not, check the soldering and resold if necessary.

If the fault still remains, it is probably due to N700.

Check VBOOST 4.1 ± 0.10 VDC and VRAD, 3.8 ± 0.20 VDC.

If the measured values are incorrect use the circuit diagram.

2.4.2 Can be programmed, but does not start afterwards or is troublesome

in the flash programmer

Open the phone and check for liquid damage.

No further action should be taken for a liquid damaged unit, send it on according to the

local company directives.

Make sure the pads of the system connector not are mechanically or liquid damaged.

Attach the board to the fixture. Power up the board.

Measure the voltages VDIG and VCORE.DSP.

If the voltages are correct, check the 13 MHz clock (B320) and MCLK (N300, pin 52 or at

L340 at the side close to N300) with an oscilloscope, the value of the measurements should be

500mVptp.

If not, change B320, if the f still remains, it is probably due to N700.

Also check D602 (pin 5 and 6) they should be, 2.75 ± 0.10 VDC.

If not, check the soldering and resold if necessary.

If the fault still remains, it is probably due to N700.

Check VBOOST ,4.1 ± 0.10 VDC and VRAD,3.8 ± 0.20 VDC.

If the measured values are incorrect use the circuit diagram.

2.4.3 Consumes more than 30 mA

Open the phone and check for liquid damage.

No further action should be taken for a liquid damaged unit, send it on according to the

local company directives.

Make sure the pads of the system connector not are mechanically or liquid damaged.

Attach the board to the fixture. Power up the board.

3 EEPROM

3.1 Write to EEPROM

Large amount of data is stored in the RAM memory of the phone during the radio calibration

in EFRA.

This information is stored permanently in a 32 kB*8 large EEPROM after interpolation.

This is done after calibration, write Local Table to EEPROM.

ThedatatransferisdoneseriallyatanI

2C-bus, Inter IC. The I2C-bus consists off two lines,

I2CDAT for data and I2CCLK for clocking.

The figure below shows a schematic over the data transfer.

3.2 How to find the fault

There is a possibility, in the trouble shooting part of EFRA, to test the communication and a

limited part of the function in the self-test.

The functionality test that is done is the processor writing and reading at a few addresses.

If the self-test shows ”Check EEPROM Failed”, the phone is faulty, but the self-test does not

display all faults, so there is a possibility for the self test not to detect the fault.

Open the phone and check for liquid damage.

No further action should be taken for a liquid damaged unit, send it on according to the

local company directives.

Check R801, R802.

Make sure there is not a short circuit against ground at I2CCLK or I2CDAT.

Power up the board and check VDIG.

The fault is usually due to D602.
