Operation
DisplayProtectiveFoil
TheLCDdisplaymayincludeaprotectivefoilcovering.Carefullyremovethisfilmbeforeuse.
Poweringthemeter
Openthebatterycompartmentbyslidingthefrontbatterycompartmentcoverdownward.Ifthe
meterisnewandbatteriesareinstalled,thebatteryinsulationstripmustberemovedbefore
usesothatthebatteriescanmakepropercircuitcontactandpowerthemeter.Ifnobatteries
areinstalled,pleaseinserttwo1.5VAAbatteriesorientedforproperpolarity.
Theinstrumentshouldnowbepoweredupandrelativehumidity,temperature,anddewpoint
temperatureshouldbedisplayedlefttorightontheLCD.
EUconsumersarelegallyboundbytheBatteryOrdinancetoreturnusedbatteriesto
communitycollectionpointsorwhereverbatteries/accumulatorsaresold.Disposalin
householdtrashorrefuseisprohibited.

Mounting
TheRH30canbewallmountedusingtherearwallmountaccessholeoritcanbeplacedona
desktoporothersurfaceusingthesuppliedstandbase.
SelectingoC/oFunitsofmeasure
Usetherear(center)oC/oFswitchtoselectthedesiredtemperatureunitofmeasure.
MAX‐MINandHOLDFunction
TheRH30storesthehighest(MAX)andlowest(MIN)readingssincethemeterwaslastreset.To
viewthemaximum(MAX)reading,presstheMIN‐MAXbutton(rightside,lower).Allreadings
displayedwillnowrepresentthehighestreadingsencounteredsincelastreset.TheMAX
indicatorwillalsoappearontheleftandmiddledisplaysforconfirmation.PresstheMIN‐MAX
buttonagaintoviewthelowestreadings(MIN)sincethelastreset.Allreadingsdisplayedwill
nowrepresentthelowestreadingsencounteredalongwiththeMINindicators.Toreset(clear)
theMAX‐MINmemories,pressRESET(rightside,upperbutton)whileMAXorMINisdisplayed.
RelativeHumidity(RH)Alert
TheRHAlarmtriggersanaudibletoneandtwovisualalerts(frowningfacesymbolilluminates
anduparrowappearsnexttothehumidityreadout)whentheRHexceedsthevaluesetbythe
user.Thelimitswitchontherear(right)ofthemetercanbesetto55%,60%,or65%RH.
WhentheRHreturnstothedesiredrangetheaudiblealarmwillstopsoundingandthefrowning
facesymbollightwillswitchoff.Thearrowwillremainhowevertoshowthatthehumiditywas
higherthanthesetvalueatleastonceinthepast.Toggletherearhumidity%limitswitchto
turnoffthearrow.
PracticalConsiderations
TheBasics
TheRH30thermo‐hygrometermonitorsambientroomconditionsandalertstheuserwhenthe
relativehumidityexceedstheuserprogrammedlimit(usetherearhumidity55/60/65%switch
tosetthelimit).
Excessivelyhumidroomaircanaffecthealth,promotingtheformationofmoistureandmold.At
theotherextreme,excessivelydryroomaircanalsoaffecthealthbydryingskin,mucous
membranes,andairways.Pets,houseplants,woodflooring,antiquefurniture,fineart,musical
instruments,etc.areallaffectedbyextremesinambientconditions.Effectiveheatingand
ventilationcanhelpachieveacomfortableandhealthylivingenvironmentandcanalsocut
costs.
TheBenefitsofVentilation
Forroomsthataretoohumid,ventilationatfirstmayseemabadideainwinterwhenoutdoor
airisalsocold,damp,andjustashumid.Coldairhowevercanabsorblittleornomoisture.
Whencoldairentersalivingareaitbecomeswarmerandcanthereforeabsorbmuchmore
watervapor;inonlyafewminutesthehumiditydecreases.

DewPointTemperature
DewPointisawindowintotherelationshipbetweenTemperatureandHumidity.Forexample,if
airiscooledataconstant(absolute)humidity,therelativehumiditywillsteadilyincreasetoa
maximumof100%.Iftheairiscooledfurther,theexcesswatervaporwillseparateintheform
ofwaterdroplets.IftheRH30indicatesanairtemperatureof20oC(60oF)andarelativehumidity
of65%,thedew‐pointtemperaturewillbe13.2oC(56oF).Thismeansthatifwallsorceilingsina
livingareaarecoolerthan13.2oC(56oF),theairwillcondenseandformdropletsonthewalls
andceilingsurfaces.Moldanddamppatchescanresult.Inthissameexample,whentherelative
humidityoftheairis40%,thedewpointtemperatureisonly6oC(43oF).Surfaceswouldhaveto
besignificantlycolderfortheairtoreachitsdewpointtoformwaterdroplets.
TipsonAchievingOptimumAmbientConditions
oCheckthatthedewpointtemperatureofwallsisatleast15oC(59oF).
oDonotswitchoffhomeheatingcompletelywhenleavingthehouse.
oVentilateforshortperiodsonlyinallweatherconditions,evenduringrain.
oAirroomsbyopeningwindowsforashorttimeonly.Partiallyopenedwindowsforprolonged
periodsdonotyieldthedesiredresults,wasteenergy,andcanfurtherpromotethegrowthof
mold.
oIfroomairistoodry(asittendstobeinwinter),humidifierunitsarehighlyrecommended
sinceairingatlowoutdoortemperatureswilltendtodecreasehumidityfurther.
