employeetrainingprogramasrequiredbyOSHA.

System(PFAS)istypicallycomposedofananchorageandaFullBodyHarness(FBH),withaconnectingdevice,i.e.,aShock

AbsorbingLanyard(SAL),oraSelf‐RetractingDevice(SRD),attachedtothedorsalD‐ringoftheFBH.



1.DESCRIPTION

TheFallTech®ContractorSeriesCableSRDisaself‐retractingdeviceforthoseworkingatheightandsubjecttofallhazards.

ThismanualcontainstwoAppendices,AppendixAandAppendixB.AppendixAcontainsfiguresandtablesspecifictotheContractorCableSRDdiscussed

inthismanual.AppendixBcontainsfiguresandtablesapplicabletofallprotectionequipmentingeneral.Allfigure,table,andchartreferencesinthis

manualaretoAppendixAunlessotherwisenoted.

Forpurposesofthismanual,theContractorCableSRDinalliterationsmaybereferredtocollectivelyastheSRD,theequipment,thedevice,theproduct,

ortheunit.

TheSRDconsistsofaself‐closing,self‐lockinghousingendcarabinerfittedtoanattachmenteyeonaglass‐fillednylonhousingwithanexternalwebbing

andrubberhandle.Thehousingcontainsalifelinecomposedofvariouslengthsofgalvanizedwirerope,woundontoaspring‐tensioneddrum.

TheSRDisequippedwithaspringandrubberballdampenertolimitfreewheelimpacts,withaswagedeyeandaswiveling,impact‐indicatingcarabiner.

Whentheuserisattached,thelifelineextendsandretracts,automaticallymaintainingatautline.Ifafalloccurs,acentrifugalsystemappliesabrake,

slowingandarrestingthefall.

ofANSIZ359.14‐2012,ANSIA10.32‐2012,andOccupationalSafetyandHealthAct(OSHA)regulations1926.502.

SRDClassAandB:ANSIrequiresSRDsbeclassifiedaccordingtotheirtesteddynamicperformance,andareclassifiedeitherClassAorClassB,basedon

thosetestresults.DynamicperformancemeansthattheSRDisinstalledinatestingdroptowerthatwillsimulatereal‐worldambientconditions.Atest

weightisattachedtotheSRDandthendropped.Instrumentsrecordthetestresults.

MaximumPeakArrestForce(MPAF)

TheArrestDistanceisthetotalverticaldistancerequiredtoarrestafall.TheArrestDistanceincludesthedecelerationdistanceandtheactivationdistance.

TheAverageArrestForceistheaverageoftheforcesappliedtothebodyandtheanchoragebythefallprotectionsystem.

TheMaximumPeakArrestForceisthemaximumamountofforcethatmaybeappliedtothebodyandtheanchoragebythefallprotectionsystem.

Inadditiontotheabovetestsconductedinambientconditions,theunitsmustberetestedforaverageandpeakforcesundercertainenvironmental

conditions,wheretheunitsarecooled,thentested,heated,thentested,andsaturatedinwaterandtestedagain.Separateunitsmaybeusedforeach

test.Alltestresultsarerecorded.

Thistestdataisthenusedtoestablishthebasisforfallclearanceguidelinespublishedintheuserinstructionmanual.

testdata,thatthemaximumarrestingforcewillnotbeexceeded,andthepersonalfallarrestsystemwillfunctionproperly.

2.APPLICATION

2.1Purpose:ASelfRetractingDevice(SRD)isdesignedandusedasacomponentinaPersonalFallArrestSystem(PFAS),toprovideacombinationof

workermobilityandfallprotectionasrequiredforinspectionwork,generalconstruction,maintenancework,oilproduction,confinedspacework,etc.

2.2PersonalFallArrestSystem:APFASisanassemblyofcomponentsandsubsystemsusedtoarrestapersonduringafallevent.APFAStypicallyconsists

ofananchorage,adecelerationdevicesuchasaShockAbsorbingLanyard(SAL)orSelfRetractingDevice(SRD),oraFallArresterConnectingSubsystem

(FACSS),andaproperlyfittedFullBodyHarness(FBH).MaximumpermissiblefreefallinatypicalPFASis6'.

PFASusedinconjunctionwiththisequipmentmustmeetANSIZ359requirementsandapplicableOSHA1926.502regulations.Whenusedinaccordance

withOSHAregulations,theSRDwilllimitfreefallto2feetorless.SeeFigure2.

TheSRDmaintainsalifelinereservewrappedaroundthedrumtoactivatethebrakeintheeventofafall.Thesereservewrapsareencasedinredtubingas

showninFigure2.Ifredtubingisvisibleatthelifelineaperture,thelifelineisextendedtoofar.Allowthelifelinetoretractbackintothehousinguntilthe

redtubingiswithinthehousing.

2.3Rescue:Rescueoperationsrequirespecializedequipmentthatisbeyondthescopeofthismanual.Theemployermusthaveawrittenrescueplan,the

meanstoimplementitandtheabilitytocommunicatethatplantousers,authorizedpersons,andtorescuers.SeeANSIZ359.

2.4ApplicationLimits:Takeactiontoavoidmovingmachinery,sharpedges,abrasivesurfaces,aswellaschemical,thermal,andelectricalhazards,

includingthearcfromweldingapplications,ascontactmaycauseseriousinjuryordeath.DonotusetheSRDinseverecold.

TheSRDisnotdesignedforuseinrestraint,personnelriding,suspension,orworkpositioning.DonotusetheSRDfortheseapplicationsexceptasaback‐upPFAS.

TheSRDdiscussedinthismanualisnotdesignedforLeadingEdgeapplications.IfthereisaLeadingEdgehazard,useanSRDspecificallydesignedfor

LeadingEdgeapplications.TheSRDisdesignedforoverheaduseonly.

OnlyonePFASmaybeattachedtoananchorageatonetime.OnlyonepersonmayconnecttotheSRDatatime.

DONOTusetheSRDtolifttools,materials,orpersonnel.

3.SYSTEMREQUIREMENTS

3.1Capacity:TheSRDisdesignedforusebypersonnelwithatotalcombinedweight(tools,clothing,etc.)of130–310lbs.

3.2CompatibilityofConnectors:Connectorsareconsideredtobecompatiblewithconnectingelementswhentheyhavebeendesignedtoworktogether

insuchawaythattheirsizesandshapesdonotcausetheirgatemechanismstoinadvertentlyopenregardlessofhowtheybecomeoriented.Contact

FallTechifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutcompatibility.Connectorsmustbecompatiblewiththeanchorageorothersystemcomponents.Donotuse

equipmentthatisnotcompatible.Non‐compatibleconnectorsmayunintentionallydisengage.Connectorsmustbecompatibleinsize,shape,andstrength.

Self‐closing,self‐lockingsnaphooksandcarabinersarerequiredbyANSIandOSHA.

3.3CompatibilityofComponents:Equipmentisdesignedforusewithapprovedcomponentsandsubsystemsonly.Substitutionsorreplacementsmade

withnon‐approvedcomponentsorsubsystemsmayjeopardizecompatibilityofequipmentandmayaffectthesafetyandreliabilityofthecompletesystem.

3.4MakingConnections:Onlyuseself‐lockingsnaphooksandcarabinerswiththisequipment.Onlyuseconnectorsthataresuitabletoeachapplication.

Ensureallconnectionsarecompatibleinsize,shape,andstrength.Donotuseequipmentthatisnotcompatible.Visuallyensureallconnectorsarefully

closedandlocked.Connectors(snaphooksandcarabiners)aredesignedtobeusedonlyasspecifiedineachproduct’suser’sinstructions.SeeFigure13in

AppendixB.

3.5PersonalFallArrestSystem:APFASisanassemblyofcomponentsandsubsystemsusedtoarrestapersonduringafallevent.Seeparagraph2.2.

3.5.1PFASAnchorageStrength:AnanchorageselectedforPFASmusthaveastrengthabletosustainastaticloadappliedinthedirectionpermittedby

thePFASofatleast:

a) Twotimesthemaximumarrestforcepermittedwhencertificationexists,or

b) 5,000lbs.(22.2kN)intheabsenceofcertification.

Table2providestestdataontypicalperformanceattributesofthethreeprincipalparameters(seeparagraph1.1)forFallTechself‐retractingdevices,listed

bymodelnumberandclass.Incertainsituations,thequalifiedpersoncandeterminethatagivenstructureisasuitableanchorpointbasedonatested

arrestdistanceandtestedmaximumarrestforce,withasafetyfactoroftwo.

3.6Definitions:Thefollowingaredefinitionsofterms.

AuthorizedPerson:Apersonassignedbytheemployertoperformdutiesatalocationwherethepersonwillbeexposedtoafallhazard(otherwise

referredtoas“user”forthepurposeoftheseinstructions).

CertifiedAnchorage:Ananchorageforfallarrest,positioning,restraint,orrescuesystemsthataqualifiedpersoncertifiestobecapableofsupportingthe

potentialfallforcesthatcouldbeencounteredduringafallorthatmeetthecriteriaforacertifiedanchorageprescribedinthisstandard.

CompetentPerson:Onewhoiscapableofidentifyingexistingandpredictablehazardsinthesurroundingsorworkingconditionswhichareunsanitary,

hazardous,ordangeroustoemployees,andwhohasauthorizationtotakepromptcorrectivemeasurestoeliminatethem.

HarnessStretch:AmountofverticaltraveloftheFullBodyHarnessD‐ringduringafallarrest.

QualifiedPerson:Apersonwitharecognizeddegreeorprofessionalcertificateandwithextensiveknowledge,training,andexperienceinthefall

protectionandrescuefieldwhoiscapableofdesigning,analyzing,evaluatingandspecifyingfallprotectionandrescuesystemstotheextentrequiredby

thisstandard.

Rescuer:Personorpersonsotherthantherescuesubjectactingtoperformanassistedrescuebyoperationofarescuesystem.

4.INSTALLATIONANDOPERATION

WARNING

Donotalterorintentionallymisusethisequipment.ConsultFallTechwhenusingthisequipmentincombinationwithcomponentsor

subsystemsotherthanthosedescribedinthismanual.

Donotuserebarhooks,largecarabinersorlargesnaphookstoconnecttotheFBHdorsalD‐ringsortoanysmalldiameternon‐compatible

anchorpointasthismaycausearoll‐outconditionand/orunintentionaldisengagement.

TheSRDdiscussedinthismanualisnotintendedforLeadingEdgeapplications.

DonotinsertextraconnectorsbetweentheSRDlifelineconnectorandtheFBHdorsalD‐ring,exceptanapprovedD‐ringextender.

Usecautionandtakeactiontoavoidsharpand/orabrasivesurfacesandedges.

4.1.InstalltheSRD:Examinetheworkareaandtakeactiontoaddresshazards.Fallsareaserioushazardwhenworkingatheight.Thereareseveralclosely

relatedfacetsoffallhazardmanagementwithaPFAS;

SwingFall:Aswingfalloccurswhentheworkermoveslaterallyandisnolongerdirectlyundertheanchorage,asshowninFigure4.Thislateralmovement

expandstheworkzone.Iftheuserstrikesanobstruction,thelowerlevel,orthegroundduringaswingfall,seriousinjuryordeathcanoccur.Swingfalls

whenusinganSRDalsogreatlyincreasetheMRFC.Usecautionandtakeactiontominimizeswingfallhazards.

ExpandedWorkZone:Theworkzoneisacirclewithitscenteronthewalking/workingsurfacedirectlyundertheanchorage.Astheusermoveslaterally,

theradiusofthecircle,measuredinfeet,increases,expandingtheworkzone.Astheworkzonecircleexpands,swingfallforcesbecomegreater,

increasingtheriskofseriousinjuryfromstrikinganobstructionoralowerlevelduringaswingfallincrease.Increasedforceandtheassociatedincreased

riskresultsinincreasedMRFC.

ThelengthoftheSRDlifelineisalsoafactor.Thelongerthelifeline,thelargerthepotentialworkzonebecomes.Alargerworkzoneincreasesuserriskand

alsoincreasestheMRFC.Chart1providesachartgridtoaidincalculatingtheMRFCwithanexpandedworkzone.Themanufacturerrecommendsa

maximumlimitof4'ofadditionalclearanceduetoswingfall.

WARNING

AnexpandedworkzonecombinedwithanextendedSRDlifelinecanbeextremelyhazardous.

4.2OperationoftheSRD:InspecttheSRDbeforeeachuseinaccordancewiththeproceduresdefinedinSection7ofthismanual.DonotusetheSRDif

inspectionshowsdamageoranymalfunction.DontheFBHinaccordancewiththeFBHmanufacturer'sinstructions.Followtheinstructionscontainedin

thismanualandonthelabels.Failuretofollowinstructionsmayresultinseriousinjuryordeath.

ConnectthelegendcarabinertothedorsalD‐ringontheFBH.Ensurethecarabinerclosesandlocks.Attachthehousingcarabinertothechosen

anchorageandensurethecarabinerclosesandlocks.Ensureallconnectionsarecompatible.Normaloperationwillallowtheworkinglengthofthelifeline

toextendandretractastheworkermovesabout.Acertainamountoftensionmustremainonthecableatalltimestoensureproperoperationofthe

internalbrake.Donotallowthelifelinetobecomeslack.Ifthelifelinebecomesslack,removetheSRDfromserviceforinspection.SeeSection7.Avoid

suddenorquickmovementsduringthenormalworkoperation,asthismaycausetheSRDbraketoengage.

LOCKINGMECHANISM:TheSRDutilizesanacceleration‐basedlockingmechanism.Thelockingfunctionrequiresacertainpayoutrateduringafalleventto

functioncorrectly.Certainsituations,confinedorcrampedspaces,shiftingfootingsuchassand,gravel,grain,oraslopedsurfacemaynotallowthelifeline

toreachsufficientspeedtoactivatethelockmechanism.AclearpathisrequiredtoassurepositivelockingoftheSRD.Ensurethelockisfunctioning

properly.Pullthelifelineoutashortdistanceandgiveitasharptug.Thelifelinemustlock.Ifitfailstolock,removeitfromserviceimmediately.

Ensuretheworkzoneremainswithinstatedparameters.BewareofLeadingEdgehazards.

DONOTattachanadditionalshockabsorbinglanyardorsimilardevicebetweentheSRDhousingandtheanchorage.

4.3FallArrestImpactIndicator:TheSRDincorporatesafallarrestimpactindicatorintheformofaredbandinthelegendcarabiner,asshowninFigure5.

Iftheredbandisvisible,removetheSRDfromserviceimmediately.

DONOTworkabovetheanchor.

DONOTexposetheredreserveindicator.

DONOTallowoneSRDlifelinetobecometangledortwistedwith,orcrossoveranotherSRDlifelineduringuse.

DONOTallowanylifelinetopassunderarmsorbetweenlegsduringuse.

DONOTclamp,knot,orpreventthelifelinefromretractingorbeingtaut.

DONOTlengthentheSRDbyconnectingalifelineorsimilarcomponent.

DONOTallowthelifelinetoremainoutsidethehousingwhennotinuse.

DONOTallowthelifelinetofreewheelbackintothehousing.Useataglinetomaintaintensionandrewindthelifelineduringperiodsofinactivity.Usethe

taglinetoretrievethelegendcarabinerforthenextuse.

DONOTleavethetaglineconnectedtothelegendconnectorwhenusingtheSRDforfallprotection.

4.4AfteraFall:Removefromserviceanyequipmentthathasbeensubjectedtofallarrestforcesorthatexhibitsdamageconsistentwithsuchforces.

6.1Maintenance:EnsuretheSRDiskeptfreeofexcesspaint,grease,dirtorothercontaminantsasthismaycausetocableorretractingmechanismto

malfunction.Ensurenodebrisentersthehousingthroughthecableaccessport.Cleantheexterioroftheunitasrequiredwithadetergent/watersolution.

Donotallowexcesswaterinsidethehousing,unlessitisbeingflushed,suchasafterexposuretosaltwaterorothercorrosioncausingelements.After

cleaning,pullthelifelineallthewayout,allowtheunittoairdry,thenretractthelifelineintotheunit.

Cleanlabelsasrequired.

DONOTuseheattodry.

DONOTattempttodisassembletheSRD.

6.2Service:Ifserviceisrequiredforanyreason;inspectionfailure,impactloaded,anytypeofmalfunction,tagtheunitas“UNUSABLE”,andcontact

FallTechat323‐752‐0066toreceiveaReturnAuthorizationnumber.OnlythemanufactureroranauthorizedagentmaymakerepairsorservicetheSRD.

6.3Storage:HangtheSRDinacool,dry,cleanenvironment,outofdirectsunlight.PositiontheSRDsoexcesswatercandrainout.Avoidexposureto

chemicalorcausticvapors.ThoroughlyinspecttheSRDafteranyperiodofextendedstorage.



7.INSPECTION

7.1Pre‐UseInspection:PerformaninspectionbeforeeachuseinaccordancewiththeGuidelineforSRDInspection.SeeTable3.Seeparagraph7.4.

7.2InspectionFrequency:OSHA1910.66,OSHA1926.502,andANSIZ359.14requireaninspectionbytheAuthorizedPersonbeforeeachuse.Inaddition,

aninspectionbyacompetentpersonatregularintervalsisrequired.Thecompetentpersonwilldeterminetheproperinspectionintervalbasedonuseand

conditions.

2.APLICACIÓN

2.1Objetivo:UnDispositivoauto‐retráctil(SRD,porsussiglaseninglés)estádiseñadoyutilizadocomouncomponentedeunSistemapersonalde

detencióndecaídas(PFAS,porsussiglaseninglés),paraproporcionarunacombinacióndemovilidaddelostrabajadoresyproteccióncontracaídassegún

seanecesarioparalostrabajosdeinspección,construccionesengeneral,trabajosdemantenimiento,produccióndepetróleo,espaciosconfinados,etc.

2.2Sistemapersonaldedetencióndecaídas:ElPFASesunconjuntodecomponentesysubsistemasutilizadosparadeteneraunapersonaduranteun

eventodecaída.UnPFASporlogeneralestácompuestoporunanclaje,undispositivodedesaceleración,talescomounaCuerdaconamortiguación(SAL)

ounDispositivoautorretráctil(SRD,porsussiglaseninglés)ounSubsistemadeconexióndedetenedordecaídas(FACSS,porsussiglaseninglés)yun

Arnésdecuerpocompleto(FBH,porsussiglaseninglés)colocadoadecuadamente.LacaídalibremáximapermitidaenunPFAStípicoesde6pies(1,8m).

ElSistemapersonaldedetencióndecaídas(PFAS,porsussiglaseninglés)utilizadoconesteequipodebecumplirconlosrequisitosdeANSIZ359ylos

reglamentosaplicablesdelaOSHA1926.502.CuandoseutilizadeacuerdoalosreglamentosdelaOSHA,elSRDlimitarálacaídalibrea2pies(0,6m)o

ElSRDmantieneunareservadelacuerdadesalvamentoenrolladaeneltamborparaactivarelfrenoenelcasodeunacaída.Estasreservasenvueltas

estáncubiertasenuntuborojocomosemuestraenlaFigura2.Sieltuborojoestávisibleenlaaperturadelacuerdadesalvamento,lamismaestará

demasiadoextendida.Permitaquelacuerdadesalvamentoseretraigaenlacarcasahastaqueeltuborojoestédentrodelacarcasa.

2.3Rescate:Lasoperacionesderescaterequierendeequiposespecializadosqueestánmásalládelalcancedeestemanual.Elempleadordebetenerun

planderescateporescrito,losmediosparaimplementarloylacapacidaddecomunicarelplanalosusuarios,laspersonasautorizadasyalossocorristas.

2.4Límitesdelaaplicación:Tomemedidasparaevitarlasmaquinariasenmovimiento,losbordesafilados,lassuperficiesabrasivasylospeligrostérmicos,

eléctricosyquímicos,incluidoelarcodelasaplicacionesdesoldadura,pueselcontactopuedecausarlesionesgravesolamuerte.NoutiliceelSRDenun

climafríoextremo.

ElSRDnohasidodiseñadoparasuusoenaplicacionesderestricción,montajedepersonal,suspensiónoposicionamientodeltrabajo.NoutiliceelSRDparaestas

aplicaciones,exceptocomounPFASderespaldo.

3.REQUISITOSDELSISTEMA

3.1Capacidad:ElSRDestádiseñadoparasuusoporelpersonalconunpesototalcombinado(herramientas,ropa,etc.)de130a310libras(59a140,6kg).

3.2Compatibilidaddeconectores:Losconectoressonconsideradoscompatiblesconelementosdeconexióncuandosehandiseñadoparafuncionaren

conjunto,demaneraquesusformasytamañosnocausenquesusmecanismosdecompuertaseabraninadvertidamente,demaneraindependienteala

formaenquequedenorientados.ComuníqueseconFallTechsitienealgunapreguntaacercadelacompatibilidad.Losconectoresdebensercompatibles

conelanclajeuotroscomponentesdelsistema.Noutiliceelequipoquenoseacompatible.Losconectoresnocompatiblespuedensoltarse

accidentalmente.Losconectoresdebensercompatiblesentamaño,formayresistencia.Losmosquetonesyganchosdecierreautomáticosonrequeridos

porANSIylaOSHA.

3.3Compatibilidaddecomponentes:Elequipoestádiseñadoparasuusosóloconcomponentesysubsistemasaprobados.Lassustitucionesoreemplazos

realizadosconcomponentesosubsistemasnoaprobadospuedenponerenpeligrolacompatibilidaddelosequiposypuedenafectaralaseguridadyla

fiabilidaddelsistemacompleto.

3.4Realizarlasconexiones:Utilicesólomosquetonesyganchosdecierreautomáticoconesteequipo.Utilicesólolosconectoresquesonadecuadospara

cadaaplicación.Asegúresedequetodaslasconexionessoncompatiblesentamaño,formayresistencia.Noutiliceelequipoquenoseacompatible.

Asegúresevisualmentedequetodoslosconectoresestáncompletamentecerradosybloqueados.Losconectores(mosquetonesyganchosdecierre

automático)estándiseñadosparaserusadossólocomoseindicaenlasinstruccionesdelusuariodecadaproducto.ConsultelaFigura13enelApéndiceB.

3.5Sistemapersonaldedetencióndecaídas:ElPFASesunconjuntodecomponentesysubsistemasutilizadosparadeteneraunapersonaduranteun

3.5.1ResistenciadelanclajedelPFAS:ElanclajeseleccionadoparaelPFASdebetenerunaresistenciacapazdesostenerunacargaestáticaaplicadaenla

direcciónpermitidaporelPFASdealmenos:

Anclajecertificado:Unanclajeparadetencióndecaídas,posicionamiento,restricción,osistemasderescatequeunapersonacalificadacertificadeque

puedesoportarlasposiblesfuerzasdecaída,lascualespodríanpresentarseduranteunacaídaoquecumpleconloscriteriosparaunanclajecertificado

previstoenlanorma.

Personacompetente:Unapersonaqueescapazdeidentificarlospeligrosexistentesypredeciblesenlosalrededoresocondicionesdetrabajoqueson

insalubresopeligrosasparalosempleados,yquientienelaautorizaciónparatomarconprontitudmedidascorrectivasparaeliminarlos.

unacaídaconbalanceo,puedenproducirselesionesgravesolamuerte.LascaídasconbalanceocuandoseutilizaunSRDtambiénaumentan

enormementelaMRFC.Tengacuidadoytomemedidasparareduciralmínimolosriesgosdecaídaconbalanceo.

Zonadetrabajoampliada:Lazonadetrabajoesuncírculoconsucentroenlasuperficieparatrabajar/caminardirectamentedebajodelanclaje.Amedida

queelusuariosedesplazalateralmente,elradiodelcírculo,medidoenpies,aumenta,ampliandolazonadetrabajo.Amedidaqueelcírculodelazonade

trabajoseexpande,lasfuerzasdecaídaconbalanceosonmayores,aumentandoelriesgodesufrirlesionesgravesalgolpearseconunaobstrucciónoun

nivelinferiorduranteunacaídaconbalanceo.ElaumentodelafuerzayelcorrespondienteaumentodelriesgoresultanenunamayorMRFC.

funcionamientoincorrectodelcableodelmecanismoretráctil.Asegúresedequenoentresuciedadalacarcasaatravésdelpuertodeaccesodelcable.
