Introduction

This Technical Service Manual contains the service and

repair procedures for Fellowes office shredders, Models

220-2, 220C-2, C-220, and C-220C. The manual

provides maintenance procedures, a list of required

tools, and a troubleshooting guide with flowcharts. In

addition, the manual contains a wiring diagram and an

illustrated parts list for each shredder.

Use the troubleshooting guide for help in identifying a

specific problem. Then turn to the appropriate section

in the manual for instructions.

Follow the service procedures carefully. Always note

the location, number, color, and position of parts and

wires before removing them so that they can be

reassembled correctly. If there are no specific

instructions for reassembling an item, simply reverse

the disassembly procedure

From the service and repair perspective, the 220-2 and

220C-2 models are similar, except for the cutting

assemblies. The 220-2 and C-220 are strip-cut

shredders. The 220C-2 and C-220C are confetti-cut

shredders. The maximum paper size for the shredders

is standard letter and A size paper. The shredders are

sheet-fed.

Models 220-2 and C-220

Models 220-2 and C-220 are strip-cut shredders with

these characteristics:

nShred size of 7/32 inch (5.8 mm) or

5/32 inch (3.9 mm)

nOptimum cutting capacity of approximately

18-20 sheets (5.8 mm shred size) or 16-18

sheets (3.9 mm shred size), letter or A size,

20 lb. paper. It can also shred 1 CD or credit

card at a time.

nMaximum paper width up to 9.5 inches

(24.1 cm) wide.

nRecommended daily capacity is 6000 sheets.

220-2 and C220 Shredders

Models 220C-2 and C-220C

Models 220C-2 and C-220C are confetti-cut shredders

with these characteristics:

nShred size of 5/32 x 1 inch (3.9 x 25 mm)

nOptimum cutting capacity 12-14 sheets of

letter or A size, 20 lb. paper.

nMaximum paper width up to 9.5 inches

(24.1 cm) wide.

nRecommended daily capacity is

3000 sheets.

Safety

When servicing a shredder, observe the following safety

precautions:

nNever put a hand, fingers, or foreign

objects into the paper feed slot or throat.

nKeep all loose articles of clothing, ties,

jewelry, long hair, or other loose objects

away from the paper feed slot.

nAlways turn off and unplug the power cord

at the wall outlet before doing any work on

a shredder.

nUse only the specified replacement parts.

See the Parts List beginning on page 35.

Wall Mounting

Each 220-2 and C-220 shredder includes a wall

mounting kit (PN 31742). This kit is used to secure the

shredder to a wall to comply with UL 60950 stability

requirements. The wall mounting kit ccntains a spacer

that allows the shredder to be mounted slightly away

from the wall for proper ventilation.

General Maintenance

The shredders are designed to perform consistently

with a minimum amount of maintenance. This section

contains recommendations for external and internal

cleaning, inspection, and lubrication.

External Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the shredder with a soft cloth.

Moisten the cloth with a mild solution of detergent

(such as dish-washing liquid) and warm water. Use

detergent sparingly to avoid contact with electrical

parts.

Do not use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based

products, or aerosol lubricants of any kind. Do not use

chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol sprays to clean

the exterior of the shredder.

Internal Cleaning

The shredder does not require periodic internal

cleaning. However, when the shredder is being serviced

perform the following maintenance tasks:

nRemove any paper strips or pieces that

may have collected around the cutting

assembly.

nIf lubricated parts are dusty, wipe away the

dust with a soft cloth.

nUse a small brush or vacuum to remove

dust from the non-lubricated surfaces such

as the motor, cutting assembly, housing,

and wiring.

Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol

sprays to clean the interior of the shredder.

Inspection

When the shredder is being serviced, visually inspect it

for defects such as loose screws, loose terminals and

connectors, and any other problems you notice.

Correct any defects and test before returning the

shredder to the customer.

Lubrication

Only the confetti-cut shredders (220C-2 and C-220C)

require lubrication to ensure proper operation. If used at

or near capacity, the machine should be oiled every time

the basket is emptied, when it becomes noisy, and when

it is serviced. Use Fellowes Powershred Lubricant

(#35250) or other non-aerosol vegetable-based oil in a

long-nozzle container. Do not use flammable synthenic

oil, petroleum-based products, or aerosol lubricants of

any kind.

To apply oil:

1Turn the machine off.

2Insert the nozzle of the oil bottle into the paper

feed slot.

3Squeeze a small bead of oil along the length of the

paper feed slot starting at one end of the paper

feed slot.

Operation

The operator panel is located on the shredder cover.

The panel consists of two control switches and

troubleshooting indicator lights.

Operator Panel Control Switches

IAutomatic Turns on the automatic-start sensor and the

the green Ready light.

OOff Turns off the automatic-start sensor and the

green Ready light.

RReverse Runs the shredder in reverse mode. Press and

hold to activate.

Manual Forward Button

Runs shredder when the button is held down.

Troubleshooting Lights

Ready Light (Green) Shredder is in automatic start mode.

Basket Ajar Waste basket drawer is open.

Basket Full Waste basket is full or paper has collected

under the cutting cylinders.

Paper Jam Shredder is jammed (e.g., paper capacity

exceeded).
