Introduction

This Technical Service Manual contains the service and repair procedures for the Fellowes

Commercial office shredder Models 3140S/4850S and 3140C/4850C. The manual provides

maintenance procedures, a list of required tools, and a troubleshooting guide. In addition, the

manual contains a wiring diagram.

Use the troubleshooting guide for help in identifying a specific problem. Then turn to the

appropriate section in the manual for instructions.

Follow the service procedures carefully. Always note the location, number, color, and position of

parts and wires before removing them so that they can be reassembled correctly. If there are no

specific instructions for reassembling an item, simply reverse the disassembly procedure.

The maximum paper size for the shredders is standard letter and / or A size paper. These

shredders are sheet-fed. Please note that this machine ships with the cutting unit inside the

cabinet.

Safety

When servicing a shredder, observe the following safety precautions:

Never put a hand, fingers, or foreign objects into the paper feed slot or throat.

Keep all loose articles of clothing, ties, jewelry, long hair, or other loose objects away from the

paper feed slot.

Always turn off and unplug the power cord at the wall outlet before doing any work on a

shredder.

Use only the specified replacement parts. (See the Parts manual).

General Maintenance

The shredders are designed to perform consistently with a minimum amount of maintenance. This

section contains recommendations for external and internal cleaning, inspection, and lubrication.

External Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the shredder with a soft cloth. Moisten the cloth with a mild solution of

detergent (such as dish-washing liquid) and warm water. Use detergent sparingly to avoid contact

with electrical parts.

Do not use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based products, or aerosol lubricants of any kind.

Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol sprays to clean the exterior of the

shredder.

Internal Cleaning

The shredder does not require periodic internal cleaning. However, when the shredder is being

serviced perform the following maintenance tasks:

Remove any paper strips or pieces that may have collected around the cutting assembly.

If lubricated parts are dusty; wipe away the dust with a soft cloth.

Use a small brush or vacuum to remove dust from the non-lubricated surfaces such as the

motor, cutting assembly, housing, and wiring.

Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol sprays to clean the interior of the shredder.

Inspection

When the shredder is being serviced, visually inspect it for defects such as loose screws, loose

terminals and connectors, and any other issues you may notice.

Correct any defects and test before returning the shredder to the customer.

Operation

The control panel on the housing top consists of the control panel button, and indicator LEDs.

Power Turns on the shredder and illuminates the power LED. This also enables the shredder to start shredding

paper.

Reverse Runs the shredder in reverse mode. Press and hold to activate.

Indicator LEDs

The 3140S/4850S and 3140C/4850C have three indicator LEDs on the Control panel.

Door open Disengages power to the motor until cabinet door is properly closed. Door icon will light up red until

door is properly closed.

Safety Flap Disengages power to the motor until the safety flap on the throat insert is in the down position.

(Safety flap in the “UP” position) (Safety flap in the “DOWN” position)

Remove paper (Paper jam) Disengages power to the motor until paper jam is removed.

ECC

The ECC (Electronic Capacity Control) measures the amount of paper going through the machine

per pass. This in done by a Hall Effect transistor located on the motor. As paper is shredded the

ECC measures the motor’s RPM. The lower the RPM the higher the ECC gauge will light up. (The

more paper that is inserted the lower motor RPM)

Lubrication

The 3140S/4850S requires no lubrication, unless cutters squeak.

The 3140C/4850C requires lubrication after every waste bag replacement.

WARNING: Do not use aerosol lubricants of any kind, as this could void the warranty.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting the shredder begins with checking the machine for possible faults. Possible

causes for machine malfunctions include:

Paper feed problems

Electrical problems

Mechanical problems

Paper Feed Faults

Paper can become jammed if the paper is misfed. Paper may also jam if the waste bin is full or if

there is a build up of paper shreds along the underside of the cutting assembly.

The ECC and Mechanical Bin Full System help to identify paper feed faults.

CAUTION! Never attempt to force jammed material through the machine.

If paper misfeeds or shredder capacity is surpassed and shredding stops the shredder will

attempt to reverse the paper out.

CAUTION! The shredder may be damaged if you alternate too rapidly between forward and

reverse.

Electrical Faults

The most common electrical faults result from:

1. An opened cabinet door

2. Loose wires

3. A defective PC board

4. Bin full detection system not operating correctly

5. ECC not operating correctly

If the waste bin is not placed properly in the cabinet, the shredder will not operate:

The Door Open LED will help to identify this problem.

Check the door to make sure it closes properly and engages the door open switch.

Press the Power button on the Control Panel Button.

If paper is in the entry slot, and the shredder does not operate:

Check to see if the power on the Control Panel Button has been engaged.

Make sure unit is plugged into the wall outlet.

If the PC board is defective:

The shredder may not run at all.

Another indication that the PC board is defective might be if the shredder runs in reverse,

but not forward or the LED lights do not turn on.

If the Auto start sensors are defective:

The shredder will not be able to detect paper being inserted.

Constant run on may occur.

If the capacitor is defective:

A typical problem caused by a defective capacitor is limited or no motor function.

If the Bin full detection system is not operating correctly:

The bin full indicator will illuminate.

The shredder will not accept any paper.

If the Electronic Capacity Control (ECC) is not operating correctly:

The ECC gauge will illuminate without any paper having been inserted for shredding.

The unit will not shred.
