Introducing Janus C4
janus
C4
Janus C4, is a network-enabled
platform that allows you to manage
your buildings security systems from
one system; quickly, easily and in a
timely manner.
2 Door Blade
You can snap the Door Blade into place on
either type of controller to manage doors.
Each door Blade enables the connection of
two doors and two readers – plus a range
of door elements such as locks and exit
buttons. See page 12
Single-Blade Controller
The compact Single-Blade
controller is ideal when you only
have a small space available.
The device supports either one
Door Blade, one I/O Blade or
one OSDP Blade, and it can be
powered via PoE or a separate
external power supply.
See page 6
Janus C4
Server
The hardware is based on a modular architecture: two variants of
intelligent controller can be combined with snap-in Blades for either
door control or peripheral support.
Line Header
The line header is used for when you wish to
use RS-485 communication to controllers.
The line header is connected to the IP
network and allows communication for up
to 6 controllers on an RS-485 line, note that
no blades are supported by the line header.
See page 10

Page 3
Multi-Blade Controller
The Multi-Blade controller is
particularly suited to larger
systems and is designed to make
the most of your space. Each
controller can support up to four
Blades, enabling connection of
up to 8 readers / 8 doors (or 16
readers / 8 doors if using OSDP
blades) or a combination of doors
and I/O. See page 8
I/O Blade
The I/O Blade can be used when
you need to connect additional
peripherals. It enables the
connection of up to 8 volt-free
relay outputs and 8 supervised
inputs. The Blade can be used in
either Single-Blade or Multi-Blade
controllers. See page 16
Janus C4 Congurator Application
Installing and conguring a Janus C4 system is
straightforward with the Congurator application,
which will discover your controllers and allow you to
congure them easily. See page 23
Janus C4 Client
+ Congurator
Application
OSDP Blade
Each OSDP blade supports
the connection of 4 OSDP
readers and 2 doors enabling
bi-directional control of 2 doors
per blade. See page 14

Single-Blade Controller
The Single-Blade controller is designed to be located close to a door or when limited
space is available. It has an integral case which supports either one 2 Door Blade
(supporting 2 doors and 2 readers), or one I/O Blade (supporting up to 8 supervised
inputs and 8 volt-free relay outputs) or one OSDP blade (supporting up to 2 doors
and 4 readers).
The Single-Blade controller can be used with dierent power options: PoE, PoE+ or
one of a number of supported 12V external power supplies, please do not use mains
power and PoE or PoE+ together as the controller will use the rst available power
supply it nds when powering up, for example if PoE and external mains the PoE
will be seen rst and the external mains ignored. Disable PoE on the switch if not
required. In addition, an optional 4.2V lithium polymer battery can provide backup for
all connected equipment during power outages.
When selecting the most suitable power supply, calculate:
The total power consumption of the controller itself, its components and the Blade
tted. This will include:
▪Controller quiescent power – 3W, max 250mA
▪Battery charging power – up to 2W, max 167mA (when battery depleted)
▪Door Blade, if tted – 1W
▪I/O Blade, if tted – 4W
▪OSDP Blade, if tted – 1W
The total power requirements for all the locks, readers, etc. that will be connected
to the Blade.

Tamper
Run cabling from the doors, locks, inputs and outputs.
The case includes breakouts to permit cable entry and a void
behind the case oers plenty of space for cabling.
Attach the case to the wall in the desired
location.
The optical tamper will operate as soon as the
case is closed
Connect a suitable 12V external power supply,
if required.
If using PoE there is no need to follow this step.
Connect the IP and/or RS485 cable as
required, please note for all controller
conguration IP must be connected rst.
If using PoE, IP connection will apply power to
the controller.
Snap the Blade into the controller. Ensure the
Blade is inserted before any power source is
connected.
For Door Blade connections, see page 12
For I/O Blade connections, see page 16
For OSDP Blade connections, see page 14
Install the lithium polymer back-up battery if
required.
The battery ensures operation of equipment
during power outage. Note that data is retained
even without a battery tted.
Once power is applied to the
controller it will be visible to the
Janus C4 Congurator application.

Multi-Blade Controller
The Multi-Blade controller is ideal for installing in a centralised location, such as
a riser cupboard or server room. Each controller can support up to four dierent
Blades, enabling the connection of up to 8 doors / 8 readers, if four Door Blades
are tted. If using OSDP blades 8 doors / 16 readers are supported. Alternatively, a
combination of door blades, OSDP blades and I/O Blades can be used.
The Multi-Blade Controller can be used with either a 5 Amp external power supply or
an 8 Amp external power supply. PoE or PoE+ can be used to power the controller for
conguration purposes only, please do not use mains power and PoE or PoE+ together
as the controller will use the rst available power supply it nds when powering up,
for example if PoE and external mains the PoE will be seen rst and the external
mains ignored. Disable PoE on the switch if not required. In addition, an optional 12V
sealed lead acid battery can provide backup for all connected equipment during power
outages (note that all data is retained when power is lost even without a battery
tted).
When selecting the most suitable power supply, calculate:
The total power consumption of the controller itself, its components and tted
Blades. This will include:
▪Controller quiescent power – 3.6W, max 300mA
▪Battery charging power – depends on the power supply used, e.g. for 12V 5A
PSU, assume max 6W (0.5A)
▪Each door Blade tted – 1W
▪Each I/O Blade tted – 4W
▪Each OSDP Blade tted – 1W

to all the Blades:

Connect 12V external power supply, if used.
Select the most appropriate option: either
5A (2.1mm circular jack) or 8A (4-pin screw
terminal).
Connect the IP and/or RS485 cable as
required, please note for all controller
conguration IP must be connected rst.
Snap in Blades. Ensure all
required Blades are inserted
before power is applied.
For Door Blade connections,
see page 12.
For I/O Blade connections,
see page 16.
For OSDP Blade
connections, see page 14
Run cabling to the enclosure from all the
doors, readers, locks, inputs and outputs
that are to be connected.
The controller can be installed in a
Grosvenor enclosure or a third-party
enclosure.
Attach the enclosure to the wall using the
xing points. Install the controller in the
enclosure. Connect the physical tamper.
The built-in optical tamper operates
automatically when the enclosure is closed.
Connect a 12V lead-acid
back-up battery if required.
Once power is applied to the controller
it will be visible to the Janus C4

RS-485 Line Header
The RS-485 Line Header is used for when RS-485 controller communication is
required. The Line Header is connected to the IP network and allows communication
for up to 6 controllers (multi or single controllers) on an RS-485 line. Please note
that all RS-485 only controllers must rst be congured via IP. Also note that no
blades are supported by the Line Header.
The Line Header can be used with dierent power options: PoE, PoE+ or one of a
number of supported 12V external power supplies, please do not use mains power
and PoE or PoE+ together as the Line Header will use the rst available power supply
