Kit contents

The upgrade kit contains:

•Four DIMMs

•Two battery modules

•An array-based management module

•A bezel

•Three labels

Before you begin

IMPORTANT: You must perform the procedures

in the order listed in this document.

Verify that the storage system is operating correctly,

including virtual disks and DR groups.

Observe proper antistatic guidelines.

Inspect the upgrade kit, verify its contents and that it

is the correct kit for your storage system.

Using HP P6000 Command View, verify the controller

cache size and record it. At the end of the installation,

you will use this information as a comparison to verify

that the update was successful.

This upgrade will take 1.5 hours or more. You must

shut down the storage system for part of that time.

The appearance of your hardware components might

differ slightly from those presented in this document.

Replace the management module

The management module is located on the rear of the

chassis, above the controllers.

NOTE: To maintain configuration information,

such as IP address, perform this procedure with

power on.

Removing a management module

1. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the module.

2. Lift the latch on the module and pull the module

out slightly. See Figure 1 (page 2).

3. Position one hand under the module, and with

the other hand, pull the module out of the

controller enclosure.

Figure 1 Removing a management module

Installing a management module

1. Insert the new management module into the slot

until you hear a click indicating that it is fully

seated.

2. Attach the Ethernet cable to the module.

The new management module has HP P6000

Command View 10.1 or later pre-installed.

Upgrade the management and controller

software

1. Upgrade HP P6000 Command View to Version

10.1 or later on all server-based management

arrays.

IMPORTANT: Be sure that you upgrade

to the same version that is installed in the

new management module.

2. Upgrade the controller software to XCS

11001100 or later.

3. Verify the software upgrade before continuing.

For instructions, see the HP P6000 Command View

Installation Guide and the HP P6000 EVA Updating

Product Software Guide.

Shut down the array

Use HP P6000 Command View to perform an orderly

shut down and power off the array to be upgraded.

From HP P6000 Command View:

1. Select System Options.

2. Select Shutdown System.

3. Enter the delay time, and then click Power OFF.

4. Follow the prompts to complete the Power OFF.

NOTE: When the storage system is powered

off, the controller fault and link LEDs at both the

front and rear of the storage system and the

controller power button are all illuminated

amber. Also, the management module link LED

is illuminated and the activity LED flashes.

Remove controller 1

1. If necessary, label the cables that are connected

to the controller. This will facilitate reconnecting

them later.

2. Disconnect the host port and SAS cables from the

controller.

3. Remove the controller:

a. Loosen the mounting latch screw, and then

move the mounting latch to the right. See

Figure 2 (page 3). The controller will slightly

eject from the enclosure.

b. Position one hand under the controller, and

with the other hand, pull the controller out of

the enclosure.

DIMMs

Removing a DIMM

1. Push the button on top of the controller module

(1), Figure 3 (page 3) and slide off the cover

(2).

2. Slot 2 (cache memory)1. Slot 1 (policy memory)

2. Press the retaining clips outward to unlock the

DIMM socket. See Figure 5 (page 3). This action

releases the module and partially lifts the module

out of the socket.

Figure 5 Removing a DIMM

3. Lift out the DIMM.

4. Repeat the procedure to remove the second

DIMM.

Installing a DIMM

1. Align a new DIMM with the DIMM socket and

press it in place. See Figure 6 (page 3).

2. Press the retaining clips inward to lock the DIMM

into the socket.

3. Repeat the procedure to install the second DIMM.

4. Place the cover on the controller module rails and

slide the cover over the controller until the latch

clicks in place.

Attach the controller upgrade label

Attach one of the controller upgrade labels to the

bottom of the controller, underneath the part number

label. See Figure 8 (page 4).

NOTE: The new labels identify your controller

as an updated model and insure that you

receive the correct replacement part if needed.

Reinstall the controller

To reinstall a controller:

1. Push the controller into the controller enclosure,

and then move the mounting latch to the left until

fully engaged and the controller is fully seated in

the enclosure. See Figure 9 (page 4).

2. Attach the host port and SAS (if applicable) cables

to the controller.

CAUTION: Do not power up the enclosure at

this time.

Figure 9 Installing a controller

Upgrade controller 2

Replace the DIMMs in controller 2 by repeating the

procedures described in “Remove controller 1” (page

2) through “Reinstall the controller” (page 4).

Replace the controller enclosure battery

modules

There are two battery modules under the bezel on the

front of the controller enclosure.

Removing the battery modules

1. Remove the enclosure front bezel by grasping

both ends and pulling it off the enclosure.

Figure 10 Enclosure bezel removal

2. Grasp the handle on the battery module and pull

it out a short distance.

3. Position one hand under the battery module, and

with the other hand, pull the battery out of the

enclosure.

4. Remove the second battery module.

Page 4

Figure 11 Removing a battery module

Install the battery modules

1. Insert a new battery module into the enclosure.

2. Push the battery module into the enclosure until

you hear a click to indicate that it is fully seated.

3. Repeat the procedure to install the second battery

module.

Install the new bezel

Install the replacement bezel that came with the kit by

pushing it in place at the front of the enclosure.

Attach the upgrade label to the rack

Attach the rack upgrade label below the bundle serial

number label on the right rear mounting rail of the

rack. See Figure 12 (page 5).

NOTE: Do not cover the original warranty

bundle serial number label.

Powering up the storage system

From the rear of the chassis:

•Power on the disk enclosure by pressing the

power switch for five seconds.

•Power on the controllers.

The controllers boot automatically.

NOTE: Wait approximately 10 minutes for

the system to become operational before you

verify the component status.

Verifying operation

Do the following to verify the components are

operating properly:

1. At the rear of the chassis, verify that each

controller health LED is lit green. If an LED is not

green, verify that the controller is properly seated

in the enclosure.

2. Verify that the IP address of the previous

management module is retained by browsing to

https://ip_address:2373 and verify that

the HP P6000 Control Panel GUI is accessible.

3. From HP P6000 Command View:

•Navigate to the controller, and verify that the

status is (Good).

•Verify that the cache size has been updated.

•Verify the health status of the original virtual

disks and DR groups.

If you want to use a different IP address, you must

connect the management module to a laptop and set

the address manually.
