SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Operating System Requirements:
Windows XP SP2 or SP3, Vista, Windows 7
Hardware Requirements:
Pentium 1 or higher
USB 1.1 or 2.0
30 MB of Disk Space or higher
16 MB of RAM or higher
SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and a browser will auto-start. If the browser does not auto-start, click on the
Start button, select Run and run the setup.exe program for the appropriate drive. Select Programming Software
from the navigation bar and then click on the MPS link to start the installation process. The programming software
for the DTI, STI, DPT and RC/RD are located under Miscellaneous Software in the navigation bar.
Note: Be certain that the “Install KL-4 USB Driver” box is checked during the installation process.
PORT ASSIGNMENT
Open Windows’ Control Panel and go to Device Manager.
Open Ports (COM& LPT) to identify the port assignment issued by computer. Plug in the KL-4F programmer to
the USB port and the screen will flash and show the device location. See the example shown below.
Set appropriate comport selection in the MPS software as needed

HARDWARE INSTALLATION
Please also refer to the Midian product manual of the product being programmed by the KL-4F for
additional programming instructions.
Plug the Type A USB connector of the supplied USB cable into an available USB port on the PC. Plug the Type
B USB connector of the supplied USB cable into the USB port on the KL-4F. See the diagram below:

The following is a list of the various connectors on the KL-4F and which products use the various connectors:
P4:
Wire in SVR-1, TS-120, TS-130, TVS-2, VAE-1, VM-3, VPU-12A, VPU-15, VS-110, VS-1000, VS-1050, VS-1100,
and VS-1200
There is a six inch wiring harness (Midian part number CSA06) supplied with the KL-4F that can plug into P5 and
P4. Plug the harness into the connector and then plug the desired product above onto the harness.
The TVS-2, VPU-15, SVR-1, TS-120, VAE-1, VM-3, VPU-15, VS-110, VS-1000, VS-1050, VS-1100 and VS-1200
require the following additional connections from the flea clips to the P2 connector of the module:
Green – Program In – Connect to the Midian product’s Program In.
Yellow – Program Out – Connect to the Midian product’s Program Out.
Connections for the SVR-1, TS-120, VAE-1, VM-3, VPU-15, VS-110, VS-1000, VS-1050, VS-1100 and VS-1200.
Connections for the TVS-2 and VPU-15
P5:
AE-1, ANI-F, BTD-2, ID-1, PR-1, RD-1, RM-1, RT-2, TDS-1, TDS-3, UD-1B, UE-1, UED-1B, UED-1B-BEZEL
There is a six inch wiring harness supplied with the KL-4F that can plug into P5 and P4. Plug the harness into the
connector and then plug the module listed above onto the harness.
Please note that the Program Out function is not supported in the AE-1, BTD-2, ID-1, PR-1, RD-1, RM-1, RT-2,
TDS-1, UD-1B, UE-1, UED-1B and UED-1B-BEZEL.
When programming the RM-1 the JP2 jumper must be in the 1-2 position. For all other products the JP2 jumper
must be in the 2-3 position.
H1 (P1):
This connector is for Midian’s HYT plug-in modules the TVS-2-H1 and VPU-15-H1.
Plug in the H1 module onto the H1 connector.

IC1 (P2):
This connector is for Midian’s Icom plug-in modules using the 30-pin type options connector including the ANI-F-
IC1, SVR-1-IC1, TS-120-IC1, TVS-2-IC1, VAE-1-IC1, VM-3-IC1, VPU-15-IC1, VS-110-IC1, VS-1000-IC1, VS-
1050-IC1, VS-1100-IC1 and VS-1200-IC1.
Plug in the IC1 module onto the IC1 connector.
IC2 (P3):
This connector is for Midian’s Icom plug-in modules using the 40-pin type options connector including the SVR-1-
IC2, TS-120-IC2, TVS-2-IC2, VAE-1-IC2, VM-3-IC2, VPU-15-IC2, VS-110-IC2, VS-1000-IC2, VS-1050-IC2, VS-
1100-IC2 and VS-1200-IC2.
Plug in the IC2 module onto the IC2 connector.
KW1 (P6):
This connector is for Midian’s Kenwood plug-in modules using the 26-pin type options connector including the
ANI-F-KW1, SVR-1-KW1, TS-120-KW1, TVS-2-KW1, VAE-1-KW1, VPU-15-KW1, VS-110-KW1, VS-1000-KW1,
VS-1050-KW1, VS-1100-KW1 and VS-1200-KW1.
Plug in the KW1 module onto the KW1 connector.
KW2 (P7):
This connector is for Midian’s Kenwood plug-in modules using the 20-pin type options connector including the
SVR-1-KW2, TS-120-KW2, TVS-2-KW2, VAE-1-KW2, VPU-15-KW2, VS-110-KW2, VS-1000-KW2, VS-1050-
KW2, VS-1100-KW2 and VS-1200-KW2.
Plug in the KW2 module onto the KW2 connector. Note: KW2 modules (except the TVS-2-KW2 and VPU-15-
KW2) sold prior to 10 June 2011 did not have resistors R43 and R44 to connect Program In and Program Out.
For older modules it will be necessary to install these resistors or jumpers to program using the KL-4F.
VX1 (P8):
This connector is for Midian’s Vertex plug-in modules using the 40-pin type options connector including the ANI-F-
VX, SVR-1-VX1, TS-120-VX1, TVS-2-VX, VAE-1-VX1, VM-3-VX1, VPU-15-VX, VS-110-VX1, VS-1000-VX1, VS-
1050-VX1, VS-1100-VX1 and VS-1200-VX1.
Plug in the VX1 module onto the VX1 connector.
P10:
The ADD-100, ADD-200, ADD-400, ADD-500, ADD-600, ADD-650, ADD-MF, DPT-1, DPT-2, DTI-1, DTI-2, IS-2,
PR-10, PTA-16, RIC-8, STI-1, STI-2, TTC-1 and VAE-10 products require the KL-4F-PC1 in addition to the KL-4F
for programming. The KL-4F-PC1 cable is plugged into the P10 RJ-11 connector of the KL-4F and into the stereo
connector on the Midian product. The KL-4F-PC1 cable goes from a male RJ-11 connector to a male 3.5 mm
stereo connector.
The SVR-1-SM1, TS-120-SM1, VAE-1-SM1, VM-3-SM1, VS-110-SM1, VS-1000-SM1, VS-1050-SM1, VS-1100-
SM1 and VS-1200-SM1 require the KL-4F-PC2 in addition to the KL-4F for programming. The KL-4F-PC2 cable is
plugged into the P10 connector of the KL-4F and into the 10-pin RJ-48 connector on the Midian SM1 product.

Flea/Alligator Clips:
In addition to the products listed above, the flea clips are also used to program (not read) Midian’s RC-10, RD-10,
UD-1B-DMH and UED-1B-DMV.
Black – Ground – Connect this alligator clip to a common ground with the Midian product.
Green – Program In – Connect this flea clip to the Midian product’s Program In wire.
Yellow – Program Out – Connect this flea clip to the Midian product’s Program Out wire if available.

SOFTWARE OPERATION
Product Selection: Select the desired product from the Product Selection screen upon boot up or from the File
menu New Product. Set the parameters of the product as desired then save the file.
Saving a Data File: Select Save As from the File menu. Click into the File Name box, type the file name and
click Save.
Retrieving a Data File: Select Open from the File Menu. Browse to the desired file location, select the name of
the file and click Open.
Programming a Unit: After setting the parameters, save the file before programming the unit. Make certain the
unit is connected as specified above.
The following products must have the PTT button pressed and held before pressing the power button to put the
unit in program mode upon power up.
AE-1, ANI-F, BTD-2, ID-1, PR-1, RD-1, RM-1, RT-2, TDS-1, TDS-3, UD-1B, UE-1, UED-1B, UED-1B-BEZEL
Press and hold the power button and click on program unit within 5 seconds of power up. You will receive a visual
verification of programming on LED D6 depending on the product.
Reading a Unit: The Program Out function is not supported in the AE-1, BTD-2, ID-1, PR-1, RC-10, RD-1, RD-
10, RM-1, RT-2, TDS-1, UD-1B, UD-1B-DMH, UE-1, UED-1B, UED-1B-BEZEL and UED-1B-DMH. To read a unit
both the Program In and Program Out wires must be connected to the KL-4F. Apply power to the unit and click
on read unit. Note: The ANI-F and TDS-3 must have the PTT button pressed and held before pressing the power
button to put the unit into read mode upon power up.

CONTROLS & INDICATORS
Ready LED: When illuminated this LED indicates that the KL-4F is receiving power from the USB.
Power Button: Press this button when ready to program to send power to the module to be programmed.
Power Jumper (JP4): If the jumper is in the 1-2 position, the power button is a momentary switch. If the jumper is
in the 2-3 position the power button is a latched switch. If set for momentary, the power button must be pressed
and held during programming.
Power LED: When illuminated this LED indicates that the KL-4F is providing power to the module to be
programmed.
PTT Buttons: The following products must have either the +PTT button or –PTT button pressed and held before
pressing and holding the power button to put the unit in program mode upon power up.
AE-1, ANI-F, BTD-2, ID-1, PR-1, RD-1, RM-1, RT-2, TDS-1, TDS-3, UD-1B, UE-1, UED-1B, UED-1B-BEZEL
Use the +PTT button if the unit is programmed to a positive PTT. Use the –PTT button if the unit is programmed
to a negative PTT. Midian’s products are shipped from the factory programmed for negative PTT.
PTT LED: When illuminated this LED indicates that the PTT button is pressed and the KL-4F is giving an active
PTT to the module to be programmed.
RM-1 Jumper (JP2): For all products being programmed on the P5 connector, this jumper should be in the 2-3
position. However, if programming the RM-1 put this jumper in the 1-2 position.
ACK LED: You will receive a visual pulsing verification of successful programming on LED D6 depending on the
product. This is not available on all products.
TXD LED: This LED will flash when the KL-4F is transmitting data to the module to be programmed.
RXD LED: This LED will flash when the KL-4F is receiving data from the module to be read.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Help Files: The help files for products such as the AE-1, BTD-2, PR-1, TDS-1 and UED-1 series, as well as a few
others, will not display on computers running Windows 7. Help Files written in .hlp format need to be converted to
.chm, .html or .xml formats so they will be supported under newer windows versions. Microsoft revoked
redistribution authority for distributing the WinHelp32.exe app that was used to display the current help files. A
version of the WinHelp32 can still be downloaded from Microsoft and installed on the machine for the operating
systems that they are not currently being distributed on. This can be viewed at the following Knowledgebase
