FEATURES

Your Optimus SCP-84 Auto-Reverse AM/FM Stereo Cas-

sette Player delivers excellent sound from its built-in ra-

dio or your favorite cassette tapes through your speakers

or stereo headphones. You can set the time on the cas-

sette player’s display, set an alarm to sound, and store

up to 20 radio stations in memory. The tuner’s PLL

(Phase-Locked Loop) circuitry gives you precise tuning

and drift-free reception.

Its features include:

Auto-Reverse Cassette Deck — lets you continuously

play a cassette tape.

AM/FM Radio with 20-Station Memor

— lets you store

up to 20 radio stations (10 FM and 10 AM) in memory so

you can quickly tune to your favorite stations.

LCD with Clock and Alarm — displays the current time

and lets you set the SCP-84 to sound an alarm at the

time you select.

Seek Tunin

— searches forward or backward to the

next strong station in the selected band so you can quick-

ly find new stations.

RadioShack is a trademark used by Tandy Corporation.

14-1225.fm Page 2 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:00 AM

E-BASS IN/OUT Switch — lets you increase bass

sounds to suit your listening preferences.

9 kHz/10kHz Switch — lets you set the frequency tuning

increments between stations for tuning in the United

States as well as abroad.

PHONES Jack — lets you connect headphones for pri-

vate listening, or speakers to share the sound with oth-

ers.

Three Power Options — let you power the SCP-84 from

internal batteries, standard AC power (with an optional

AC adapter), or your vehicle’s cigarette-lighter socket

(with an optional DC adapter).

Removable Belt Clip — lets you attach the SCP-84 to

your belt for hands-free carrying when you are on the go.

Lock Switch — lets you lock the currently tuned station

to prevent accidentally changing it.

Note: You need a pair of headphones or amplified

speakers (neither supplied), with a 1/8-inch plug, to oper-

ate your SCP-84. Your local RadioShack store sells a

wide variety of headphones and speakers.

POWERING THE SCP-84

You can power your SCP-84 from any of three power

sources:

• Internal batteries (not supplied)

• Standard AC power (with an optional AC adapter)

• Your vehicle’s cigarette-lighter socket (with an

optional DC adapter)

Note: Connecting an optional adapter disconnects inter-

nal batteries.

Using Batteries

You can power your SCP-84 from two AA batteries. We

recommend alkaline batteries, such as RadioShack Cat.

No. 23-557, not supplied. You can also use rechargeable

nickel-cadmium batteries (such as Cat. No. 23-125, not

supplied). If you use rechargeable batteries, you also

need a battery charger (such as Cat. No. 23-133, not

supplied).

14-1225.fm Page 6 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:00 AM

Cautions:

• Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of

batteries (standard, alkaline, and nickel-cadmium), or

rechargeable batteries of different capacities in the

SCP-84.

• Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.

Follow these steps to install batteries.

1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and

slide it in the direction of the arrow to remove it.

2. Install the batteries over the ribbon inside the com-

partment as indicated by the positive (+) polarity sym-

bols marked inside.

3. Replace the cover.

14-1225.fm Page 7 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:00 AM

Cautions:

• Never leave dead or weak batteries in the SCP-84.

• If you do not plan to use the SCP-84 for a month or

more, or if you plan to use only AC or vehicle battery

power, remove the batteries.

• Dispose of batteries promptly and properly; do not

bury or burn them.

Note: If your SCP-84 locks up, simply remove one of the

batteries then reinstall it.

Important: Your SCP-84 is capable of using recharge-

able nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries’

useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly.

Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste

management authorities for information on recycling or

disposal programs in your area. Some options that might

be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off

boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-

back programs.

Using AC Power

You can power the SCP-84 from a standard AC outlet us-

ing an AC adapter (such as Cat. No. 273-1654, not sup-

plied).

14-1225.fm Page 8 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:00 AM

Cautions:

• The recommended AC adapter supplies 3 volts and

delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip is set to

negative, and its plug correctly fits the DC 3V jack on

the bottom of the SCP-84. Using an adapter that

does not meet these specifications could damage the

SCP-84 or the adapter.

• Always plug the AC adapter’s barrel plug into the

SCP-84 before you plug its power module into the

AC outlet, and unplug its power module from the AC

outlet before you unplug its barrel plug from the SCP-

84.

Follow these steps to connect an AC adapter to the SCP-

84.

1. Set the adapter’s voltage switch to 3V.

2. Insert the 3.4 mm outer diameter/1.3 mm inner diam-

eter barrel plug into the AC adapter’s socket. Line up

TIP on the plug with –NEG on the socket.

(illus)

14-1225.fm Page 9 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:00 AM

3. Insert the barrel plug into the SCP-84’s DC 3V jack.

4. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet.

Using Your Vehicle’s Cigarette-Lighter

Socket

To power the SCP-84 from your vehicle’s cigarette-lighter

socket, you need a DC adapter, such as Cat. No. 270-

1560.

Cautions:

• The recommended DC cigarette-lighter adapter sup-

plies 3 volts and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its

center tip is set to negative, and its plug correctly fits

the DC 3V jack on the bottom of the SCP-84. Using

an adapter that does not meet these specifications

could damage the SCP-84 or the adapter.

• Unplug the adapter from your vehicle’s cigarette-

lighter socket when you turn off the ignition. This pre-

vents your vehicle’s battery from being drained if you

leave the SCP-84 on when you turn off the ignition.
