Your humidifier

SBC SC580

Philips is dedicated to producing caring, reliable products that new fathers

and mothers really need. Products whose reliability and operating quality

bring reassurance.Your SC580 humidifier helps to improve the air quality of

your baby’s room by adding moisture to the air to establish a comfortable

humidity level. A correct humidity level helps to protect your baby from

irritation of the mucous membranes, dry and itchy skin, chapped lips and

dry, sore throat.

When the mucous membranes do not function optimally they cannot give

your baby full protection from all kinds of germs. This increases the chance

of your baby catching a cold or the flu and reduces the baby’s resistance to

infection by mould and bacteria.

Relative humidity level

People need a certain level of humidity to feel comfortable.

Using a humidifier helps you to keep indoor humidity at a comfortable level.

A humidity level between 40 and 60 percent is recommended.

A humidity level below 30 percent can be dry and uncomfortable.

The hygrometer/thermometer supplied enables you to check humidity and

temperature at regular times.

The amount of water vapour in the air is usually less than is required to

saturate the air. Relative humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air

compared to the amount of water vapour the air can hold at the current

temperature.

Working principle of your SC580

Your SC580 humidifier uses an ultrasonic, high-frequency oscillator to break

up the water into tiny particles. The ventilation system blows out these

water particles (mist) into the dry air where they evaporate to ensure the

required humidity. The great advantage of the ultrasonic technique is that it

operates extremely silently without affecting the room temperature or

steaming up windows, walls or furniture.

Your humidifier holds about 2 litres of water in the tank and produces up to

250 ml of moisture per hour, depending on the room humidity and

temperature.

• Keep your humidifier at normal room temperature, and do not use it at

very low temperatures (< 0°C).

•Make sure the mains lead is always out of reach of your baby,

at least one metre away.

•Check that the voltage indicated on the type plate corresponds to the

Operating your humidifier

Preparation

•When using your humidifier for the first time, place it in the room where

it is going to be used half an hour before switching on.

•Place your humidifier on a smooth, flat and stable surface.

•Make sure the water basin (12) is clean and free of foreign objects.

•Recommended room temperature for babies is between 16 and 20 ºC

with a relative humidity between 40 and 60%.

•Check the air humidity on the hygrometer supplied. If the humidity level

drops below 40 percent, follow the instructions below to humidify the air.

Operation

1Be sure your humidifier is disconnected from the mains and the ON/OFF

switch (9) is in the OFF position.

2Remove the cover (1) from the water tank (4).

3Remove the water tank (4) from the base unit (8) by holding the tank

handle (3) and lifting straight upward.

4Place the water tank upside down, twist off the tank cap (14) by turning

anticlockwise and fill the tank with water.

Use clean water.Tap water can be used, but the use of boiled or distilled

water is preferred. Water temperature should not exceed 40º C.

5Replace the tank cap(14) by firmly turning clockwise and then replace

the water tank (4) onto the base unit (8).

>The tank will immediately begin to transfer water into the water

basin (12).

6Place the cover (1) back onto the water tank (4).

The cover can be rotated so that the mist outlet (2) can be placed in any

required position.

7Connect the mains lead (11) to a mains socket.

Connect directly into the mains socket and fully insert the plug.

E N G L I S H 7

8Switch on your humidifier by turning the ON/OFF switch (9) clockwise

until you hear a click.

>The Power light (7) lights up orange.Your humidifier is now operative.

•By turning the ON/OFF switch (9) clockwise/anticlockwise you can

regulate the mist output of your humidifier.

9Switch off your humidifier when the required humidity level has been

reached (between 40 and 60 percent).

The humidity level can be checked on the humidity indicator (15) on the

hygrometer/thermometer.

Turn the ON/OFF switch (9) anticlockwise until you hear a click.

>The Power light (7) goes out.Your humidifier is now switched off.

10 Disconnect the mains lead (11) from the mains socket.

Notes:

–Do not refill your humidifier without first disconnecting from the mains

socket. Be sure to pull by the plug and not by the lead.

–If your humidifier is not going to be used for two or more days, make sure

any residual water is drained from the water tank (4) and water basin (12)

to prevent algae or bacteria growth.

Automatic switch off

•The security switch (6) automatically switches off the oscillator (13)

when the water level is too low.

•The tip-over switch (10) automatically switches off the oscillator (13)

when your humidifier is tilted.

>This protects the oscillator from overheating. In both cases your

humidifier is still powered and the ventilator is still operating.

Maintenance

Your product requires regular maintenance!

The frequency of maintenance depends on the average daily use of your

humidifier and the water hardness of your area. The hardness of the water is

determined by the amount of calcium and magnesium it contains.

Too much calcium and magnesium in the water causes scale in the water

basin, water tank and on the oscillator. This will prevent your humidifier from

operating properly. Therefore, the scale needs to be removed as it becomes

noticeable.

Tips for avoiding scale

•Use cold boiled water or distilled water.

Water temperature should not exceed 40 ºC.

•Clean oscillator (13), water tank (4) and water basin (12) weekly.

• Refresh the water in the water tank (4) each time you use your

humidifier.

•Clean your complete humidifier, drain the water from water tank (4) and

water basin (12) and dry all parts with a soft, dry cloth when you are not

going to use your humidifier for a long time.

Descaling your humidifier

1Disconnect your humidifier from the mains and set the ON/OFF switch

(9) to the OFF position.

2Fill the water basin (12) with water and white vinegar.

Leave the water/vinegar in for at least 4 hours (preferably one night).

3Then clean off the scale with a soft cloth.

4Rinse all parts with clean water.

Cleaning your humidifier

•Disconnect your humidifier from the mains and set the ON/OFF switch

(9) to the OFF position.

•All parts of your humidifier, except the base unit (8) can be washed with

water and soap or in a dishwasher.

•Clean the inner part of the water tank (4) by filling it with water,

firmly tightening the tank cap(14) and shaking the tank repeatedly.

•Do not immerse the base unit (8), mains lead (11), or plug in water or

any other liquid. Clean the base unit with a damp cloth.

•Do not use cleaning or scouring agents.

•Do not use any metal or hard objects to clean the oscillator.
