Introduction

Product Overview

The Soundman™ system is designed for three basic functions:

1. Provides improved audio over the standard hardware that ships with

videoconferencing group systems

2. Enables all participants to be heard in larger rooms

3. Provides a virtually invisible audio system when using CTG ceiling microphones

and speakers

The SM-02 is a single box microphone / speaker amplification system designed for

teleconferencing applications. The Soundman system functions as an audio peripheral

to a video codec without affecting or voiding the manufacturer’s factory warranty. Most

manufacturers’ enterprise group systems have been tested by CTG for compatibility. The

appendix provides integration information for common video codecs.

Microphones and speakers are proprietary to the SM-02 control unit. Microphones are

designed specifically for teleconferencing and are normally placed up to 10 feet from the

speaking individual. The ceiling speakers are designed to disburse the far end audio

source evenly throughout the room.

An installed system allows users to conduct meetings without restricting their actions to

accommodate the audio system. Ceiling microphones allow furniture to be moved about

freely without having to relocate cables or reconnect.

Videoconferencing

The Soundman system functions as an audio peripheral to a video codec. It may be

easily integrated into a set-top system or enterprise group system for larger rooms. The

added audio functionality does not complicate use of the system. The remote control

supplied with the videoconferencing system controls incoming audio and muting.

Audioconferencing

The Premier telephone interface connects to the SM-02 for audioconferencing

capabilities. The Premier is manufactured by Polycom®and has hardware and software

modifications for use with the SM-02. The Premier functions as a phone only

(commonly placed on a credenza) and may also be controlled through a wireless remote

offered by CTG. This modified version of the Polycom®Premier is only available

through CTG and is designed to function as a permanently installed system.

General Considerations

The Room

Most of today’s conference rooms outfitted for teleconferencing will not undergo

improvements for acoustics or noise reduction. Soundman systems are designed for a

typical conference room with an acoustical drop ceiling. The system includes ceiling

microphones that will be extremely effective in acoustical drop ceilings 10’ or lower.

Should there be a condition were the performance of the ceiling microphones would be

compromised, CTG offers a low profile table microphone, or a table implant microphone.

Room Reverberation

Good speech intelligibility is achieved in a room that is not excessively reverberant. An

acoustical drop ceiling in most rooms typically results in clear, intelligible speech being

transmitted to the far end when using ceiling or table microphones. When designing or

renovating a room for teleconferencing, there is an ideal specification for reverberation

time:

RT60 of less than 0.6 seconds

Reverberation time is defined as the time that is required for a sound to decay to one-

millionth of its original energy. There are different methods of improving intelligibility

in a poor room:

1. Treat the problem at the source:

• Sound absorbing fiberglass wall panels

• Heavy draperies

• Carpeting

• Acoustical drop ceiling

2. Substitute ceiling microphones with table microphones

3. Relocate microphones – rooms with a raised dome over a conference table will

sound hollow if a ceiling microphone is placed in the dome. Relocating

microphones outside the dome in the lower section of ceiling will result in better

sound.

Please contact CTG’s technical support for recommendations in challenging rooms.

Ambient Room Noise

When a teleconferencing system transmits excessive ambient noise it is very noticeable to

a quieter far end room. In addition, the transmitting levels are compromised and may be

too low to the far end. Soundman systems benefit from the noise reduction filter found

in most manufacturers’ video codecs. These filters range from 12dB-20dB in noise

reduction. In addition, the Premier telephone interface has a noise reduction filter of

20dB. Extremely loud rooms may still transmit a portion of the room noise. A room

being used for teleconferencing should try to meet the following ambient noise level:

NC-25 (Noise Criteria) – corresponds to about 35dBa in the human voice range

There are different methods of reducing excessive noise:

1. HVAC noise – Most HVAC systems may be adjusted to reduce the airflow or

turbulence to the vents but maintain an adequate level of heating or cooling.

Avoid placing microphones next to noisy vents.

2. Codec or computer fans – Isolate these devices in a cabinet, cart or separate room

when possible.

3. Projector fan – Microphones should not be placed next to a projector.

A group of people having separate conversations may create an ambient noise issue.

Please contact CTG for different methods of highlighting a presenter or muting an

audience area.

How to Layout a System

Room Usage

Before an audio system is considered for teleconferencing, the usable parts of the room

should be evaluated. For example, a conference table centered in a room will usually

require microphones over or on the table. The same room with seating along the walls

may require additional microphones or the locations would change to the perimeter of the

table. Please consult CTG technical support with any questions about microphone /

speaker placement.

Typical Configurations

The following drawings illustrate common room layouts:

The videoconferencing system is located at

the head of the table.

TABLE

The above ceiling microphone and speaker configurations provide even coverage for the

entire conference area in each scenario. Consider microphone placement as the first and

most important step of the installation. The microphone(s) are omni-directional and

should be centered over or between the meeting participants. The speakers are isolated

from the microphones by the echo cancellation in the codec during videoconferencing or

by the Premier telephone interface during audioconferencing. The videoconferencing

systems CTG is compatible with, meet the G.167 recommendation for convergence rate.

Speaker locations should be determined by the location of participants. The CTG ceiling

speaker has a wide dispersion angle of 120°.

This is typically a 30’L x 30’Wx 9’H room.

The videoconferencing system may be locate

anywhere in the room.

Please consult CTG technical support for assistance with microphone / speaker

placement.

Installation

Required Cables

CTG recommends the following cables (not included with the system) for ceiling

components or table microphones running distances over 20 feet:

• Microphone – 22 gauge single pair shielded (Belden®type 82761 or equivalent)

• Speaker – 18 gauge twisted pair (Belden®type 82740 or equivalent)

To comply with most building codes, wires that are running through air plenum space

must be Teflon™insulated unless they are enclosed in approved conduit. Every

microphone and speaker connects directly (homerun) to the SM-02. To avoid crosstalk,

do not run microphone and speaker cables through the same conduit.

Required Tools and Hardware

The following tools are recommended for the installation of the ceiling components:

• ½ inch drill bit – by simply twisting the bit through an acoustic tile, a perfect

hole will be made for the CM-01 ceiling microphone

• Hand saw – the ceiling speaker enclosure requires a 6 3/8-inch hole

• Wall snake – in most rooms, cables will need to be run down a wall and

terminated at the supplied wall plate

• Wire nuts – for ceiling speakers

• Electrical box – the supplied wall plate fastens to a single gang electrical box

• Small blade screw driver – often referred to in the industry as a “tweaker”

• Ladder

Microphone and Speaker Terminations

Inside of the microphone you will find a four position terminal strip. Connections are:

Terminal 1 Positive

Terminal 2 Negative

There is a ground jumper between

terminals 3 and 4 that should be

removed if metallic conduit is used, or

if the ceiling tile is foil backed, or if

any part of the microphone housing

comes in contact with building ground.

Adjust the exposed length of the

microphone barrel by loosening the

setscrew accessible through the hole in

the side of the housing. Set it so that

the windscreen will be perfectly flush

with the room side ceiling surface.

A wall plate with a DB-15 connector

mounted on it is supplied and should be

installed in a standard single gang wall

box near where the equipment will be

located. All microphone and speaker

cables should be routed to this box and

connected to the terminal blocks provided on the wall plate. The microphone cables

should be separated from running close to the speaker cables to prevent any cross talk.

Speaker

The speaker enclosures supplied will require a 6 3/8-inch hole in the ceiling material.

The speaker grills are supplied with the speakers already mounted and attached to the

enclosures with torsion springs inserted into clips inside the enclosure. To remove the

grill simply pull it away from the enclosure and compress the springs to detach.

To simplify installation CTG attaches a twelve-inch wire to each speaker terminal so that

it may be connected with wire nuts. The red wire is positive.

Note that the wiring above has the microphones connected in out of phase pairs.

This results in some common mode noise reduction for noisy rooms. In quiet rooms

more even coverage may be possible with all the microphones connected in phase.

Please consult CTG technical support for custom wiring configurations.

Connecting to a Group Videoconferencing System

Connections

CTG requests systems integration information when a purchase order is submitted.

Based on this information the appropriate cables that interconnect the codec and the SM-

02 ship with the system. The quick setup sheets outline the connections and any settings

that should be changed to the codec.

Echo Cancellation / Digital Signal Processing

Soundman systems including the SM-02 are designed to use the echo cancellation and

digital signal processing internal to a video codec. CTG has designed the product line to

expand the capabilities of an enterprise group videoconferencing system.

Volume Control

Adjustments to the incoming audio should only be made through the videoconferencing

system. The speaker volume on the front of the SM-02 is a “set and forget” level. An

external volume control should never be inserted between the output of the codec and the

input of the SM-02.

Microphone Muting

Microphone muting should be performed through the video codec. External muting

would cause the acoustic model to be lost.

Multi-point Calls

Send levels may vary between videoconferencing systems. The far end may adjust their

volume control during point-point calls but level variations become problematic during a

multipoint. In addition, voice switching of locations will not work properly if the level is

too low.
