High Definition Video

A Sony world first

The Sony HDR-FX1E is no normal

High Definition camcorder – it’s the

world’s first consumer HD model to

use the 1080i video signal, which

gives you more pixels and a higher bit

rate for astonishing image quality.

What’s more, the HDR-FX1E offers

rare dual-format ‘switchability’ so you

can record and play back on HDV

1080i and MiniDV. Whichever format

you choose, with 16:9, three CCDs

and the finest Vario-Sonnar T* lens

from Carl Zeiss, this Handycam has

the semi-pro features to do any film

justice.

CCD technology

Light captured by the lens goes

straight to the CCD, which is

where Sony’s record-breaking

chip technology comes into

play. Our chips give you up to

3.3 megapixels for that trade-

mark Sony image accuracy (as

a rule, the more pixels, the bet-

ter the image quality). Most

Sony CCDs also feature our

electronic image stabilisation

technology, so it won’t matter if

you wobble while you’re

recording. Gyroscopic sensors

automatically alert the CCD,

which corrects excess shaking

at the moment of capture.

Engineered for excellence.

It’s an image thing

Capturing

Watch any movie made on a Sony

megapixel Handycam, and you can’t

help noticing the outstanding image

quality. That’s down to our new ultra-

fast processors that give your

Handycam time to repeatedly refine

the quality of your images before

they’re recorded. From capture and

conversion to signal noise reduction,

the technology is flawless and the

results are sublime. Make your

movies with a Sony Handycam and

you’ll see what we mean.

Origin of light

Less reflection

Lens CCD

our smallest models record the

sharpest images, while the

Vario-Sonnar T* lens uses

ZEISS’ own advanced T* lens

coating to virtually eliminate

ghosting and flaring. For the

complete list of lens specifica-

tions, turn to page 27.

Carl Zeiss lenses

For the best possible supply of

incoming light, nearly all Sony

camcorders rely on a master

lens from Carl Zeiss. ZEISS

deliver with precision-crafted

glass for world-class image

definition. Two ZEISS lenses

lead the field: the super-com-

pact Vario-Tessar ensures even

ZEISS’ special T* coating cuts

reflection by up to 70%.

14-bit DXP

A Sony megapixel Handycam

uses 14-bit DXP technology to

convert analogue light into digi-

tal signals with excellent levels

of detail. And it can even cor-

rect under- or over-exposed

shots.

Raw Data Noise Reduction

This new Sony technology

makes Advanced HAD more

effective than ever. It applies

noise reduction (NR) directly at

source to the original image

data, as your Handycam is

reading it off the CCD. With

quality like this, you’ll be proud

to show your movies to friends.

Inter-frame NR

This technology is only possible

because your Handycam can

work so fast. By quickly com-

paring successive frames, it

isolates and reduces the type

of signal noise that could

adversely affect colour and

luminance.

Converting

Noise

reduction

Filming in poor light can’t

always be avoided and leaves

lesser camcorders with ‘picture

noise’ – fuzzy footage that’s no

fun to watch. But a Sony

Digital Handycam uses

Advanced HAD to cut out fuzz

at the moment of conversion.

This technology means the

CCD can convert more light per

pixel, reducing picture noise by

up to 50%.

this data, the Resolution

The magic of 3

Whether you’re filming moving

select your Handycam, we offer a

choice of different imaging technolo-

gies, depending on what type of

more important to you. For superb

moving image quality, for example,

Sony semi-professional camcorders

are driven by not just one but three

CCD chips. The camcorder splits

incoming light into the three primary

colours, then records each colour on

its own dedicated chip.

Compact imaging power

Just because most Sony camcorders

are small enough to hold in the palm

of your hand, it doesn’t mean you

have to compromise on image quality

when you make your movies. With

3.3 megapixels packed into one chip,

the DCR-PC350E Handycam gives

you the moving and still imaging

power typical of the super-compact

Sony range. High numbers of pixels

are ideal for taking excellent photos

too. Combined with special Sony

features like a Carl Zeiss lens and

Primary Color Filter (see right),

they’ll deliver irresistible images for

memories you’ll treasure.

Primary Color Filter

Sony’s Primary Color Filter delivers

truly breathtaking colours. Like the

3 CCDs in our semi-pro camcorders,

it splits incoming light into red, blue

and green – the primary colours used

to reproduce images on screens – so

your footage looks more natural and

warmer when you play it back on TV.

And by doubling the green wave-

length, it flatters to please – green is

the colour picked up best by the

human eye!

For beautifully natural images,

our special filter converts all light into

primary colours.
