Avoid eye and skin exposure to unshielded equipment

Squid UV LED Curing System light sources are classified as Risk Group 3 under IEC
62471, at a distance of 200mm.
Scope of IEC62471
The IEC62471 standard “Photobiological Safety of Lamps and Lamp Systems” provides
guidance for the evaluation of the photobiological safety of all electrically-powered, non-
laser sources of optical radiation emitting in the spectral range 200-3000 nm, whether or
not the emission of light is the primary purpose of the product. The inclusion of LEDs in
the scope of this standard is specifically mentioned to highlight the removal of LEDs from
the scope of the laser standard, IEC60825.
The potential hazards of exposure to the skin, the front surfaces of the eye (cornea,
conjunctiva, and lens) and the retina are evaluated through consideration of six specific
hazards with respect to exposure limits (ELs) provided for an exposure duration of eight
hours, taken as a working day. The standard does not consider the potential effects of
long-term exposure, nor of abnormal photosensitivity.

Risk Groups defined in IEC 62471:
Exempt - means there is no photo-biological hazard for the end points in this standard.
Risk Group 1 – Low Risk: Does not pose a hazard due to normal behavioral limitations
on exposure.
Risk Group 2 – Moderate Risk: Does notpose a hazard due to aversion response to very
bright light sources ordue to thermal discomfort. A portion of UV lightsource will be visible
and be a strong stimulus.
Risk Group 3 – High Risk: May pose a hazard even for momentary or brief exposure.
Warning: Do not look directly at the UV light source without wearing UV
SAFETY GOGGLES.
Minimum Requirements: UVEX SCT – orange lens which reduces eye fatigue by
absorbing blue and green light and allows the operator to clearlyview components during
the curing and inspection processes while absorbing 99.9% of UV radiation and visible
light up to 532nm.
Shielding
Each installation is unique and the manufacturer cannot anticipate shielding needs for a
specific location. It is the end user’s responsibility to ensure that proper shielding is in
place before operating the UV LED Curing System.
Attention! Please ensure the Illumination Module is properly shielded and that
personnel are not at UV risk while the UV LED Curing System is operating.

Safety Shielding Enclosure
The user will need to create a safety shielding enclosure around the UV lamp to protect
workers from exposure to ultraviolet light. If possible, only place the lamp within the
enclosure, and install the printer outside of the enclosure. The enclosure should be
made with a non-reflective material which is especially important if the printhead must
be mounted inside the enclosure.
•Minimize radiation from the UV lamp from reaching the printhead from reflections
off the printed substrate (cardboard box) and the safety shielding box if the
printhead is mounted inside.
•The installer will need to separate the UV lamp from the printhead as far as
possible up to a maximum separation time of 3 seconds.
•The user should only have the lamp turned on when the substrate is in front of
the lamp-not before or after. This can be accomplished by using the delayed
trigger in the advanced settings of the controller program shown on Page 35.
