EVM WARNINGS AND RESTRICTIONS

It is important to operate this EVM within the input voltage range of ±5 V and the output voltage

range of 0 V and 5 V.

Exceeding the specified input range may cause unexpected operation and/or irreversible

damage to the EVM. If there are questions concerning the input range, please contact a TI

field representative prior to connecting the input power.

Applying loads outside of the specified output range may result in unintended operation and/or

possible permanent damage to the EVM. Please consult the EVM User’s Guide prior to

connecting any load to the EVM output. If there is uncertainty as to the load specification,

please contact a TI field representative.

During normal operation, some circuit components may have case temperatures greater than

60°C. The EVM is designed to operate properly with certain components above 70°C as long

as the input and output ranges are maintained. These components include but are not limited

to linear regulators, switching transistors, pass transistors, and current sense resistors. These

types of devices can be identified using the EVM schematic located in the EVM User’s Guide.

When placing measurement probes near these devices during operation, please be aware

that these devices may be very warm to the touch.

This user’s guide provides the information needed to set up and operate the

VCA8613EVM evaluation module. For a more detailed description of the

VCA8613, please refer to the product data sheet available from the Texas In-

How to Use This Manual

Throughout this document, the acronym EVM and the phrase evaluation

module are synonymous with the VCA8613EVM.

Description

1 Description

The VCA861xEVM is designed to provide ease of use in evaluating the

performance of the VCA8613 variable gain amplifier. The evaluation module

operates in three modes: Stand-Alone, PC-Control, and Direct-Control.

Stand-Alone mode uses an onboard microcontroller to enable the operation

of the VCA8613. The functionality in Stand-Alone mode is limited to

factory-programmed modes. PC-Control mode uses the included software to

operate all of the functions of the VCA8613. The software was written on

Windows2000 and its operation has been verified with Windows XP,

Windows2000, and Windows98. Direct-Control mode uses external control

and data signals to control the functions of the VCA8613.

The VCA8613EVM has the following features:

2 Initial Configuration

2.1 Power Supply

The VCA861xEVM has provisions for three separate power supplies:

-+5V: Positive Supply with Integrated VCA Supply(1)

-−5V: Negative Supply for Output and CW Amplifiers

-+3V: Positive VCA Supply(1)

1) This positive VCA supply is not used when R1 is populated with a 0Ωresistor. If this supply

is used, then R1 must be removed.

The +3V input allows the VCA to be powered separately from the rest of the

evaluation module for supply current monitoring of the VCA only.

Signals

VCA8613EVM

3 Signals

3.1 Input Signals

The input signals are applied to SMA connectors J19 to J26. The input signals

should be provided from a low-impedance source (less than 100Ω) as a result

of the 4.5kΩinput impedance of the VCA. The inputs are ac-coupled into the

LNA of the VCA8613 through 0.01µF capacitors, and do not attenuate the in-

put signal.

3.2 Output Signals

The outputs of the evaluation module are located at SMA connectors J28

through J35 for the TGC outputs, and J9 to J18 for the CW outputs. The out-

puts from the VCA8613 are buffered with operational amplifiers.

3.3 TGC Outputs

The differential TGC outputs are buffered by op amps (OPA690) in a differen-

tial configuration with a differential gain of 1. When testing the VCA8613EVM,

outputs J28 through J35 (TGC outputs) must be terminated into 50Ωloads

such as those of a spectrum analyzer. This termination will result in the proper

matching for the output amplifiers, and no loss will have to be taken into ac-

count.

3.4 CW Outputs

The following diagram shows the CW output circuit. This circuit is duplicated

for each CW output.

The CW outputs are current outputs and require a current-to-voltage conver-

sion in order to view the outputs with an oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer.

The OPA690 op amp is used as the current-to-voltage converter. Provisions

have been made on the EVM board to monitor the current directly by the use

of JP1 and JP2. When monitoring of the current is needed, solder jumpers JP4

through JP13 should be removed to help alleviate any errors associated with

bias current requirements of the current-to-voltage converter.

Microcontroller

The CW outputs need a compliance voltage of +3V. The circuit in Figure 1

shows how the compliance voltage is applied to the VCA861x device through

a 220µH inductor. Extra provisions have been made to this circuit for future

VCA devices.

As configured from the factory, the CW output circuit allows the noise of the

CW path to be measured. This configuration is the reason for the large feed-

back resistor in the output amplifier circuit. However, when trying to sum more

than two channels to one CW output, this resistor may pose a problem. Before

summing more than two CW channels, this feedback resistor should be re-

duced in value. For help in determining the minimum value of resistor needed,

refer to the VCA8613 data sheet for more information about the maximum cur-

rent draw for the CW outputs.

4 Microcontroller

The VCA8613EVM contains a microcontroller to access functions on the

VCA8613. The microcontroller provides the evaluation module the ability to run

in a stand-alone mode or be controlled by software running on a PC. The micro-

controller is run from its own internal oscillator set to 12MHz. The only external

clock signals are those used to communicate to the VCA8613 via the serial data

clock line (for clocking data to the VCA8613), and the embedded clock signal in

the RS-232 communications circuit. The RS-232 clock operates only when data

is being sent from the PC to the microcontroller. The serial communication from

the PC to the microcontroller is set to 19200kbps. This baud rate is set internally

on the microcontroller and is configured automatically in the PC software.

5 Modes of Operation

There are three modes of operation for the VCA8613EVM: Stand-Alone, PC-

Control, and Direct-Control. The first two modes are accessed by using the S1

switches and the S2 pushbutton. S2 is used as the reset button to make pro-

gram changes on the microcontroller. Table 1 shows the different modes of op-

eration.
