THE LINKUP GATEWAY CONCEPT
The voltage-type LinkUp gateway provi es an easy metho to convert vessel an engine information to
NMEA 2000®.
Compatible sensors are for example, but not only, liqui levels, trim tabs, ru er angle, temperature, or
pressure sen ers.
Easily installe , the LinkUp gateway replaces the original wiring, elivering power to both the LinkUp evice
an the sensor from the NMEA 2000® backbone while still being compliant with the NMEA 2000®
certification requirements.
The ata are then available for being isplaye on any VMH, OceanLink, AcquaLink, or more in general on
any glass cockpit NMEA 2000® isplay evice.
Configuring LinkUp gateways is simple using a mobile evice an the companion Link Up Configurator App
for An roi or iOS.
Each evice has a built-in passive NFC antenna. Therefore, the parameters of the sensor (type, instance an
warning threshol ) can be configure on the mobile phone which is then “tappe ” against the LinkUp
evice for instant ata ownloa .
DESIGN AND FUNCTION
The LinkUp gateway has a simple yet effective esign. The potte housing an contactless programming
interface allow the unit to be installe in engine rooms, making it compliant to the ISO 8846:1990 as
requeste by the irective 2013-53(EC).
The stan ar NMEA 2000® M12 plug allows for a plug-an -play installation to the network backbone.
The gateway provi es an AMP SuperSeal plug to easily make a waterproof connection to the sensor. If the
sensor oesn’t have the require counterpart connector, the wires are easy accessible to attach any type of
interface.

SAFETY DURING INSTALLATION
•During installation, ensure that the pro uct’s
components o not affect or limit vehicle
functions. Avoi amaging these components!
•Only install un amage parts in a vehicle!
•During installation, ensure that the pro uct
oes not impair the fiel of vision an that it
cannot impact the river’s or passenger’s hea !
•A specialize technician shoul install the
pro uct. If you install the pro uct yourself,
wear appropriate work clothing. Do not wear
loose clothing, as it may get caught in moving
parts. Protect long hair with a hair net.
•When working on the on-boar electronics, o
not wear metallic or con uctive jewelry such as
necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc.
•If work on a running engine is require , exercise
extreme caution. Wear only appropriate work
clothing as you are at risk of personal injury,
resulting from being crushe or burne .
•Before beginning, isconnect the negative
terminal on the battery, otherwise you risk a
short circuit. If the vehicle is supplie by
auxiliary batteries, you must also isconnect
the negative terminals on these batteries!

systems. Please note that when you isconnect
the battery, all volatile electronic memories
lose their input values an must be
reprogramme .
•If working on gasoline boat motors, let the
motor compartment fan run before beginning
work.
•Pay attention to how lines an cable harnesses
are lai so that you o not rill or saw through
them!
•Do not install the pro uct in the mechanical
an electrical airbag area!
•Do not rill holes or ports in loa -bearing or
stabilizing stays or tie bars!
•When working un erneath the vehicle, secure
it accor ing to the specifications from the
vehicle manufacturer.
•Note the necessary clearance behin the rill
hole or port at the installation location.

•Drill small ports; enlarge an complete them, if
necessary, using taper milling tools, saber saws,
keyhole saws or files. Deburr e ges. Follow the
safety instructions of the tool manufacturer.
•Use only insulate tools if work is necessary on
live parts.
•Use only the multimeter or io e test lamps
provi e , to measure voltages an currents in
the vehicle/machine or boat. Use of
conventional test lamps can cause amage to
control units or other electronic systems.
•The electrical in icator outputs an cables
connecte to them must be protecte from
irect contact an amage. The cables in use
must have enough insulation an electric
strength an the contact points must be safe
from touch.
•Use appropriate measures to also protect the
electrically con uctive parts on the connecte
consumer from irect contact. Laying metallic,
uninsulate cables an contacts is prohibite .
SAFETY AFTER INSTALLATION
•Connect the groun cable tightly to the
negative terminal of the battery.
•Reenter/reprogram the volatile electronic
memory values.
•Check all functions.
•Use only clean water to clean the components.
Note the Ingress Protection (IP) ratings (IEC
60529).
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
•Note cable cross-sectional area!
•Re ucing the cable cross-sectional area lea s
to higher current ensity, which can cause the
cable cross-sectional area in question to heat
up!
•When installing electrical cables, use the
provi e cable ucts an harnesses; however,
o not run cables parallel to ignition cables or
to cables that lea to large electricity
consumers.
•Fasten cables with cable ties or a hesive tape.
Do not run cables over moving parts. Do not
attach cables to the steering column!
•Ensure that cables are not subject to tensile,
compressive, or shearing forces.
•If cables are run through rill holes, protect
them using rubber sleeves or the like.
•Use only one cable stripper to strip the cable.

•Use only a soft sol ering process or
commercially available crimp connector to
sol er new cable connections!
•Make crimp connections with cable crimping
pliers only. Follow the safety instructions of the
tool manufacturer.

faulty or cables are amage .
•Short circuits in the vehicle network can cause
fires, battery explosions an amages to other
electronic systems. Consequently, all power
supply cable connections must be provi e

insulate .

•Faulty connections can cause short circuits.
Only connect cables accor ing to the electrical
wiring iagram.
•If operating the instrument on power supply
units, note that the power supply unit must be
stabilize an it must comply with the following
stan ar : DIN EN 61000, Parts 6-1 to 6-4.

WARNING
Before beginning, isconnect the negative terminal on the battery, otherwise you risk a short
circuit.
If the vehicle is supplie by auxiliary batteries, you must also isconnect the negative terminals on these
batteries! Short circuits can cause fires, battery explosions an amages to other electronic systems.
Please note that when you isconnect the battery, all volatile electronic memories lose their input values
an must be reprogramme .
BEFORE THE ASSEMBLY
1.
Before beginning, turn off the ignition an remove
the ignition key. If necessary, remove the main
circuit switch.
2. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.
Make sure the battery cannot restart
unintentionally.
3. Place the evice at least 300 mm away from any
magnetic compass.

CONNECTING A SENSOR
When possible, use the e icate sensor plug. If the require sensor oes not have the fitting counterpart
an it is not possible to attach such a connector, just cut off the LinkUps plug an complete the wiring with
the given interface. Refer to the pinout above for that.
The LinkUp Gateway elivers a 5V-supply voltage that can be use to power an passive sensor. Note that
the power output oes not eliver more than 15mA of current.
When using an active sensor, make sure it oes not provi e signals higher than 5V.

CONNECT TO THE NMEA 2000® NETWORK
Once the sensor installation is complete you can interface the
LinkUp gateway to the NMEA 2000® backbone through the
e icate plug.
Please ensure to tighten the M12 connector by screwing it onto
its counterpart, so to preserve the water tightness.
A rop cable is not nee e unless the total length of the LinkUp
evice is not enough to reach the NMEA 2000® backbone. In
this case it is possible to exten the total length by using one of
the accessory rop cables.
Please note that NMEA 2000® oes not allow rop cables
longer than 6 meters.
Refer to the NMEA 2000® stan ar for a proper network
esign.
If power from the NMEA 2000® network is receive , the green
LED on the LinkUp housing will start flashing (see “LED
notifications”).

LINKUP CONFIGURATOR APP
To configure the sensor, some parameters like the sensor type, its calibration or warning threshol s, must be
entere into the LinkUp gateway.
This is possible through the “Link Up Configurator” smartphone App, which can be ownloa e free of
charge from the stores of both An roi an iOS evices.
A simple explanation of the configuration process is also available as in-app instructions.
Thanks to the passive embe e NFC receiver, the LinkUp gateway can be configure , as escribe below,
without the nee of a power supply.

SENSOR CONFIGURATION
1. Launch the “Link Up Configurator” App an rea the current
configuration of the LinkUp evice by “tapping” the smartphone
onto the LinkUp wireless area (in icate by the NFC symbol)
The rea out is necessary before you can write new configurations
on the LinkUp.
NOTE: The antenna position on the smartphone epen s on the
mo el.
Please refer to the smartphone manufacturer manual.
2. After the rea out, the App will show the “CONFIGURATION
SUMMARY”, which isplays all the current settings of the evice.
To see the exact sensor curve, that has been programme on the
LinkUp Gateway before, press the button with the plus. This will
open a further table.
To mo ify the configuration, press the “Change Configuration”
button.

3. Select the sensor type to be configure among the list shown in
the app (e.g. Fuel Level).
See section “Supporte Configurations” further below to see all
the possible options.
4. Either choose one of the propose stan ar sensor curves or
efine your own characteristic by selecting the option “CUSTOM”.
To see the fixe points of the before efine sensor curve press
the little button with the plus.
Define to which engine or tank number the measure values
apply, so the ata is correctly sent to the NMEA network.
For some sensors (see list below) it is possible to also set up an
alarm, with its relate threshol .
The fiel to enter the threshol value appears after enabling the
Alarm switch.
Once the settings are complete , press the “Write Configuration”
button to prepare the transfer to the gateway evice.
5. To uploa the configuration, simply “tap” the smartphone again
onto the LinkUps wireless area, as escribe in step 1.
The configuration is instantaneously transferre to the evice, an
the new “Configuration Summary” is isplaye .
