GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
1 The law demands that all gas appliances are installed by c mpetent pers ns in
acc rdance with the current GAS SAFETY (INSTALLATION AND USE) REGULATIONS.
The installati n must c mply with these installati n instructi ns and all relevant parts
f L cal and Nati nal Building Regulati ns r Building Standards (Sc tland)

British Standards.

2 THE HEARTH (Appliances in floo level fi eplaces)
Where the appliance is fitted in a fl r level builders pening, fl r level fireplace recess
r fl r level flue b x, the hearth shall:
a) Extend thr ugh the wh le base f the builders pening, fireplace recess r beneath
the flue b x.
b) Pr ject at least 300mm in fr nt f any naked flame r incandescent part f the fire
bed.
c) Pr ject at least 150mm bey nd each side f any naked flame r incandescent part f
the fire bed, r if there is a n n-c mbustible wall within 150mm f any naked flame
r incandescent part f the fire bed, up t that wall.
d) Have a thickness f n t less than 12mm and a minimum height f 50mm al ng its
fr nt and side edges.
HOLE-IN-THE-WALL INSTALLATIONS
Where the appliance is installed in a h le-in-the-wall fireplace, a hearth as previ usly
detailed f r fl r level fireplaces shall be fitted n the fl r beneath the h le s as t
pr tect c mbustible material fr m radiant heat unless:
a) The appliance is installed s that every part f any naked flame r incandescent part
f the fire bed is at least 225mm vertically ab ve any carpet r fl r c vering. When
installing an appliance in this situati n a tactile separat r must be used, t pr tect
as far as reas nably p ssible the user, r ther pers ns within the r m, fr m risk f
burns r igniti n f their cl thing.
b) A tactile separat r can be in the f rm f a fender, kerb, hearth, shelf r h riz ntal
bar all made fr m n n c mbustible material and fixed n t less than 50mm & n t
m re than 1000mm ab ve the fl r level. They sh uld be p siti ned n t less than
300mm in fr nt f and 150mm bey nd the edge f any naked flame r incandescent
part f the fire bed.
3 It is rec mmended that dec rative frets have a minimum f 30cm2 (5 sq. in) f free air
space thr ugh the ash pan c ver.
4 VENTILATION
Subject t a satisfact ry spillage test, there is n requirement f r purp se made
ventilati n int the r m c ntaining the appliance. (See page 15)
