1. Introduction

1.1 Introduction

When a sequence CPU module error happens, you can determine its source to some extent by

checking the LED indicators located on the module front and the system log.

Perform the checks described in this document to get vital information, which can help to identify

the source of the error. The error code so obtained can be checked against the error code table

given in Chapter 8, “RAS Functions" of Part A of "Sequence CPU Instruction Manual –

Functions (for F3SP71-4N/4S, F3SP76-7N/7S) " (IM34M06P15-01E) for error cause analysis.

For remedial measures, refer to the user manuals of individual modules concerned.

1.2 Basic Operation of Self-Diagnosis

The sequence CPU module performs self-diagnosis including memory, processor, and ladder

instruction execution checks at power-on and during program execution.

When self-diagnosis detects an error, error-time actions are taken automatically according to the

severity of the error and the LED indicators are updated to reflect the CPU status.

1.3 Basic Checks

To identify the cause of an error, check the following items:

•the LED indicators located on the module front

•the system log of the sequence CPU

•the special registers and special relays

•the relays and registers of advanced function modules

2. Checking LEDs

2.1 Checking LEDs

The LEDs located on the module front indicate the health condition of the sequence CPU. The

displayed information of the available LEDs are described in the figure below.

■ Sequence processing status indicators

RDY: Lit when the CPU is powered, ready and

operating normally.

RUN: Lit when a program is running.

ALM: Indicates a minor failure when lit. Program

execution can continue.

ERR: Indicates a moderate failure when lit. Program

execution can neither begin nor continue.

The power supply module outputs a FAIL

signal.

All LEDs are off: Major failure or power is off.

■ SD card access indicators

Indicates the status of the SD/SDHC memory card

and the execution status of the smart access function.

■ User LEDs

These are user-controllable LED indicators.

■ MODE switch value indicator

Indicates the position of the MODE

rotary switch.

2.2 LED Display and Failure Modes

Failure modes (errors) are classified into three levels of severity: major failure, moderate failure

and minor failure.

3. Checking System Log

3.1 What is System Log

The FA-M3 logs events, such as errors (ERR/ALM) and power-on events, along with time

information in the CPU. By checking this system log, you can trace the details and time of

occurrence of detected errors.

You can check the system log:

•using the FA-M3 Programming Tool WideField3 or

•using the SD card

3.2 Checking System Log Using FA-M3 Programming Tool WideField3

3.3 Checking System Log using SD Card

System information can be retrieved using the SD card and MODE switch function. This allows

you to check the system log even if the FA-M3 Programming Tool WideField3 is not available.

■ System Maintenance Using MODE Switch

Besides retrieving log information, the MODE

switch (+ SD card) provides convenient functions

for switching between operating modes, loading

and saving programs, etc. so you can maintain an

FA-M3 system even without a personal computer!

■Procedure

①Mount the SD card.

②Set the MODE switch to position 7.

The MODE switch LED displays the

value “4, 2, 1”

③Press and release the SET button within

one second.

④The system log is saved in the top-level

INFO folder on the SD card.

⑤Open and read the file on a PC.

4. Checking Special Registers and Special Relays

4.1 What are Special Registers and Special Relays?

Special registers and specials relays are registers and relays that have specific functions relating

to, say, the internal state and errors of the FA-M3. When an error is detected and logged in the

system log, the self-diagnosis result may also be saved in special registers (Z) in the sequence

CPU module.

In addition, a special relay (M) corresponding to the error is set. This special relay may be

checked in a ladder program for error detection purposes. Refer to the following table for

mapping error messages to special registers and special relays.

4.2 How to Check Special Registers and Special Relays

You can check special registers and special relays using the FA-M3 Programming Tool WideField3,

either from the Common Tag Definition Monitor, or the Device Monitor. The following figure shows

example screen captures when an instruction processing error is detected.

4.3 How to Check Other Devices

5. Advanced Function Module Monitor

5.1 What is Advanced Function Module Monitor

Advanced function modules such as temperature control and PID modules and positioning

modules have a self-diagnosis function, which stores error information in the module’s own

registers or relays when it detects an error.

The Advanced Function Module Monitor directly monitors the registers and relays of such

advanced function modules. With this convenience function, there is no need to write programs

that read register and relay data for monitoring purposes only.

5.2 How to Check Advanced Function Module Registers

In the online window of the FA-M3 Programming Tool WideField3, right-click the module to be

monitored from the module list displayed on the left side of the window and select either the

Advanced Function Module Register Monitor or the I/O Relay Monitor*. You can now monitor

registers and relays of the selected module.

* A module with the I/O Relay Monitor option displayed as grayed-out has no relay.
