Chapter 1 Explanation of Functions
1.1 Block Diagram and Configuration Diagram
The block diagram of the optical system is shown below. The optical system employs a
polychromator system consisting of a fixed grating and a photodiode array (PDA sensor).
Because the reflection spectrum of FBG can be detected using an optical system with its fixed
elements (component parts), it is ideal for applications that demand high reliability.
The principles of spectroscopy are described below. The light input from the FC connector is
collimated by the lenses and hits the fixed grating. Here the reflection spectrum of FBG is
dispersed and divided into each wavelength of light. Then, the light is focused on the
photodiode array by the lens. This focal point is detected by scanning the InGaAs photodiode
array (consisting of 640 photodiode elements). The optical system is fixed in place (welded if
necessary) to endure vibration and shock, and to minimize deterioration with age.

The configuration diagram is shown below. The reflection spectrum of FBG that is detected
by the optical system (shown above) is I/V converted, A/D converted, and processed using a
digital signal processor (DSP) to derive the center wavelength and optical power level of
each reflection spectrum of FBG. In addition, in order to determine the optical power level in
a stable manner, the photodiode array is maintained at a constant temperature.

1.2 Measurement Method
In the measurement of strain, temperature, and other items using the FBG sensor, strain,
temperature, and other items can be derived by measuring the reflection spectrum from
the grating area that forms in the optical fiber. The FBG wavelength monitor is a useful
instrument for measuring the wavelength.
This section describes how the optical wavelength and optical power level are measured
using the FBG Sensor Monitor. The center wavelength and its optical power level is
calculated from the power distribution of the optical signal obtained by multiple PD
elements and the wavelength that is pre-assigned to each PD element.
You can set appropriate measurement conditions by changing parameters such as the
average count, threshold value, and offset value. Furthermore, the optical wavelength
and optical power level are calibrated before the instrument is shipped from the factory.
Commands are also provided to compensate the results of these measurements if such
compensation is necessary after the instrument is installed in the system.

Explanation of Functions
1
Because the FB200C/FB200L uses a polychromator system with no moving parts, high-
speed stable measurement is possible.
The basic measurement sequence is shown below (examples for –5 dBm and –15 dBm
ranges).
•When Averaging Is Not Performed
The measurement interval is determined by the selected interval. (The default value
is 10 ms.)
However, if the wavelength calculation and processing take longer than the
measurement interval, the resultant data are output when they are ready. (Example
when the number of FBG spectra is 10 and the baud rate is 921.6 kbps)

1.3 Names and Functions of Parts
The figure below shows the outline and the arrangement of parts such as the optical
input, interface connector, and mode switch.
•Mode Switch
The mode switch is located inside the side panel cover. You can set the operation
mode, transfer rate, and other parameters by using these switches.
•Interface Connector
The interface connector consists of the communication interface and power supply
interface. The communication interface is the RS-422.
•Optical Input
The fiber light is applied here. The optical connector is of an FC type (standard), and
the fiber supports the SMF (Single Mode Fiber).
•Holes for Attachment Screws
These holes are used to attach the FB200C/FB200L in the system.
