Safety instructions

• Caution! This professional device needs to be installed by

qualiﬁed personnel only.

• Please check the carton box for any kind of damage on

reception of the goods. In case of a damaged carton, please

contact your dealer before opening the carton.

• !!!! Danger !!!! Exposure to high sound levels may cause a

permanent hearing loss. Individuals vary considerably to sound

pressure level induced hearing loss but nearly everyone will

lose some hearing if exposed to high sound pressure levels for

a sufﬁcient amount of time. Therefore it is recommended that

all persons exposed to equipment capable of producing high

sound pressure levels, such as this ampliﬁer, be protected by

hearing protection while installing or operating this unit.

• Read all documentation before operating your equipment.

• Keep all documentation for future reference.

• Save the carton and packing material even if the equipment has

arrived in good condition.

• Should you ever need to ship the unit, use only the original

factory packing.

• Do not spill water or other liquids into or on the unit.

• Make sure power outlets conform to the power requirements

listed on the back of the unit.

• Do not use the unit if the electrical power cord is frayed or

broken.

• Always operate the unit with the AC ground wire connected to

the electrical system ground.

• Set level controls on ampliﬁers all the way down during power-

up to prevent speaker damage if there are high signal levels at

the inputs.

• Do not connect the inputs / outputs of ampliﬁers or consoles

to any other voltage source, such as a battery, mains source, or

power supply, regardless of whether the ampliﬁer or console is

turned on or off.

• Power down & disconnect units from mains voltage before

making connections.

• Do not use the unit near stoves, heat registers, radiators, or

other heat producing devices.

• Do not operate equipment on a surface or in an environment

which may distort the normal ﬂow of air around the unit. If the

unit is used in an extremely dusty or smoky environment, the

unit should be periodically “blown free” of dust.

• Do not remove the cover. Removing the cover will expose you

to potentially dangerous volt¬ ages.

• Do not drive the inputs with a signal level higher than that

required to drive equipment to full output.

• Do not run the output of any ampliﬁer back into another input.

• In case of mal-function this device should be serviced by

qualiﬁed service personnel only.

• This unit has NOT been designed for use in mobile applications,

such as: mobile discobars, mobile PA systems, Live bands, audio

rental systems, …

Active loudspeaker set

• The Apart SDQ5PIR powered loudspeaker set is a versatile and very

compact, easy to use, plug and play sound system. It consists of an

ampliﬁed loudspeaker with a 5.25” woofer, a high frequency unit

and a second linkable passive loudspeaker, powered by the second

ampliﬁer built into the active speaker. The speakers are magnetically

shielded.

• The speakers can be remote controlled via the included infrared

remote control, RS232 serial port or an optional wall control panel

with or without local input. The auto power off function switches

off the power ampliﬁer when no audio signal is present for a certain

time. This time window can be adjusted using RS232 commands.

• Further beneﬁts are: adjustable maximum level, multiple inputs:

unbalanced on mini-jack and balanced on euroblock + additional

input via optional wall control unit. All inputs can be gain adjusted,

used individually or mixed together (except optional wall control

panel local input source: this input cannot be mixed with the A or B

or A+B inputs).

• The automatic power on function will power up the speaker

automatically when a sufﬁciently high input signal is present at one

of the selected inputs. The threshold (AUPTRG) can be adjusted via

RS232 control to suit your needs.

• These speakers have been carefully packed at the factory. Open the

carton box and remove the speakers from the packing. Do not use

sharp objects. Place the speakers on a ﬂat surface. The mounting

brackets, infrared remote control unit, power cord and speaker

interconnection wire are included in the packing,

• When the product shows signs of damage caused by transportation,

contact your dealer immediately. Damage due to transport and

rough handling is not covered by the manufacturer warranty.

• The SDQ5PIR complies with CE regulations.

Rear panel

1. Volume control: set the desired level. The

level set here will also be the maximum

possible level when operating the unit

remotely (infrared or RS232 commands).

2. Treble control: add or decrease the high

frequencies. Adding high frequencies may

improve intelligibility. Adjust to the desired

level: push the + or - button once to

increase or decrease the treble tone control

in steps of 2 dB. Push both + and - buttons

simultaneously to reset the treble tone

control to neutral position.

3. Bass control: add or decrease the low

frequencies. Decreasing bass can improve

the intelligibility of spoken messages,

especially in reverberant rooms: push the

+ or - button once to increase or decrease

the bass tone control in steps of 2 dB.

Push both + and - buttons simultaneously

to reset the bass tone control to neutral

position.

4. On/Off: turn the unit on or off with this

button. When the unit is switched ON, the

status led will be lit (green).

5. Status led: multifunctional led: this led is

orange in standby mode, green when the

speaker is active and red when an overload

or clipping occurs.

6. RS232 port: standard SUB D9 connector for

serial control.

7. 3, 5 mm stereo jack input A: connect your

unbalanced line level signals here.

8. Balanced line inputs B: connect your

balanced line level signals here.

9. Speaker output: connect the right speaker

(slave) here. Mind the polarity!!! Connect +

to + and – to -.

10. Mode switch: this switch turns your

SDQ5PIR in a full stereo or a very compact

mono system. When switched to mono

mode, use the “Left” input only. The audio

signal from the left input will sound through

both speakers.

11. Mains socket: connect the supplied mains

cord here. This socket contains a 1 A slow

acting fuse. Use a screw driver to ﬂip out

the fuse compartment to access a broken

fuse. When this fuse blows frequently you

should return the SDQ to your dealer for

service.

12. Heat sink: the heat sink will warm up during

operation! This is normal.

13. Wall panel connector: standard RJ45

connector for connection of an optional

wall control panel: ACP, ACPL or ACPR. This

connection is NOT COMPATIBLE with other

networks, such as computer networks etc.

Do not attempt to connect anything but the

optional SDQ5PIR wall control panels.

RS232 communication

Communication with SDQ5PIR via RS232 is done with simple ASCII

commands and replies. The port settings are 19200 Baudrate, 8 data

bits, no parity and 1 stop bit. The physical connection is as described

below:

Standard 9 pin serial cable, wired straight through (no null modem

cable!). Maximum wire length depends on cable quality and inﬂuence

from external interference.

Pin 2: TX data: data transmission output

Pin 3: RX data: data reception input

Pin 5: GND: ground

Other pins are not used.

NOTE: when the unit is in standby mode, it may not respond to the

ﬁrst command sent to the unit, unless you send the command “SET

STANDBY OFF<CR>”. If you want to send any other command while

the unit is in standby mode, it will wake up from standby and reply

“STANDBY OFF<CR>”. After that, resend the command and it will be

executed.

An instruction has at least a command and an attribute. In many cases,

there are extra values needed, like a source name/character or a value.

From here we assume that you are familiar with RS232 communication

protocols and connections. If not, please read the user manual of your

control device ﬁrst.

Instructions always have to be ended with <CR>, carriage return. Line

feed <LF> characters will always be omitted, however SDQ5PIR can use

(and echo) <LF> after a <CR>. Instructions are not case sensitive!

The 4 possible commands are: SET, GET, INC and DEC. With the INC

and DEC command, a “step value” can be speciﬁed. See the table

below for details (in the value column).
