Quick Start is recommended only for those userswho are experienced with hardware and software

installation procedures. Quick Start is divided into the following sections:

• Installing the Module

Provides you with information to help you install the your SmartSwitch Remote Access

Module so that it is running and ready for configuration. Information includes a description of

user documentation and instructions for hardware installation, accessing the module,

upgrading the module’s software, and installing and launching SFVRA-CFG (the

configuration utility).

• Module Connectivity

Using an example network configured through SFVRA-CFG, this section provides instructions

for module and other device connectivity using IP.

OVERVIEW

Installing the Module provides you with information to help you install the SmartSwitch Remote

AccessModule so that it is running and ready for configuration. We include information regarding:

• User Documentation

A description of user documentation included with the module.

• Hardware Installation

Step-by-step instructions for installing the module and completing its cabling.

• Accessing the Module

Instructions for first-time module access and for subsequent remote access.

• Upgrading Software

Instructions for upgrading system software (not required for new installations).

• Installing and Launching SFVRA-CFG

Instructions for installing and starting-up the SFVRA-CFG configuration utility.

USER DOCUMENTATION

We include user documentation for the module itself, for the SFVRA Manager applications that are

included with the module, and for the Central Site CyberSWITCH. A summary of user

documentation follows.

9W006 & 9W007 DOCUMENTATION

This guide, the 9W006 & 9W007 Remote Access Module Quick Start, provides abbreviated installation

and configuration instructions. It is intended to help you quickly get your module up and running.

Instructions for setting up specific types of remote devices are also included. The Quick Start and

the User’s Guide are included on the 9W006 &9W007 Remote Access Module CD-ROM.

The 9W006 & 9W007 Remote Access Module User’s Guide provides more detailed information for

installing your system. It also provides information to help keep your module running efficiently.

The 9W006 & 9W007 Release Notes provide release information and highlights.

SFVRA MANAGER DOCUMENTATION

The SFVRA Configuration Manager User’s Guide provides detailed information for installing,

configuring, and using the module’s configuration utility, SFVRA Configuration Manager

(SFVRA-CFG). The SFVRA Configuration and SFVRA Connection Manager User’s Guides are

included on the SFVRA Manager CD-ROM.

QUICK START

8 SmartSwitch Remote Access Module

The SFVRA Connection Manager User’s Guide provides detailed information for installing,

configuring, and using the SFVRA Connection Manager (SFVRA-CONN). SFVRA-CONN

communicates in real time with the module to provide centralized, policy-based connection

management for remote and central site users.

The SFVRA-CFG and SFVRA-CONN Release Notes provide release information and highlights. The

Release Notes are provided in a file that can be accessed under the applications’ Help menus.

CENTRAL SITE CYBERSWITCH DOCUMENTATION

The primary configuration utility included for configuring your module is SFVRA-CFG. The

SmartSwitch Remote Access Module documentation was written with SFVRA-CFG in mind. This

configuration utility will be sufficient for most configurations, however, if you will be setting up a

complex configuration, you may need to use CFGEDIT, a more comprehensive configuration

utility. Note that once you use CFGEDIT, you will be unable to go back to using SFVRA-CFG

(except under one special circumstance — if you configure IP filters using CFGEDIT and you make

no other changes except for the IP filter configuration, you can then go back to SFVRA-CFG).

The following is a list of some of the major features that cannot be configured through SFVRA-CFG:

• AppleTalk Remote LAN port

• Bridge filters

•DHCP

• File attributes configuration

•FrameRelay

• IP filters

• IPX static routes and services

• Off-node authentication databases

• TFTP configuration

•X.25

If you will be using any of the above features, you will need to use CFGEDIT to configure your

module. In result, you will need to refer to supplemental user documentation provided on the

9W006 &9W007 Remote Access Module CD-ROM for configuration, verification, and diagnosis

instructions (and any other activities that use SFVRA-CFG). This documentation is the

CyberSWITCH Central Site User Documentation. Note that although the supplemental

documentation is for a different Cabletron product, the CFGEDIT instructions included can be

applied to the SmartSwitch Remote Access Module. This documentation includes:

The CyberSWITCH Central Quick Start provides abbreviated installation and configuration

instructions for experienced users. Specific instructions for setting up various types of remote

devices are also included.

The CyberSWITCH Central Site User’s Guide provides information to install and configure your

system. It also provides information you may need to refer to keep your system running efficiently

after it is up and running. For example, it provides a listing of system messages. Many other

subjects are covered, including routine maintenance, hardware information, system verification,

and problem diagnosis.

The Example Networks Guide includes several example networks, beginning with a simple network,

and progressing to more complex networks. These example network chapters provide

configuration instructions that you may find helpful in configuring your own similar network.

Hardware Installation

HARDWARE INSTALLATION

This section provides instructions for:

• installing the 9W006/9W007 module in to a SmartSwitch 9000

• completing the module’s cabling

In case you need to restart the module during installation, instructions are also included for

resetting the module.

INSTALLING THE SMARTSWITCH REMOTE ACCESS MODULE

1. The module fills two SmartSwitch 9000 slots. Remove the SmartSwitch panels that cover the

two slots into which the module will be installed. For proper airflow and cooling, cover any

empty slots.

2. Before installing the module into the chassis, ensure that the bottom and top plastic tabs are

unlocked.

3. Slide the module into the available slots making sure that the module is between the guides.

Take care that the module engages the backplane connectors properly.

4. Lock down the top and bottom plastic tabs at the same time, applying even pressure.

CONNECTING THE MODULE’SCABLING

Installing the module into the SmartSwitch 9000 automatically completes its power supply and

SMB connections. What you will need to complete, though, is the Ethernet and PRI cabling. In

addition, U.S. and European installations need a Mod-Tap adapter for each PRI port.

We include an illustration of the 9W006-400. You may find this illustration helpful for locating the

module’s Ethernet and PRI ports. Instructions for each cabling requirement follow the illustration.

The SmartSwitchRemote Access Moduleand the host SmartSwitch 9000 are

sensitive to static discharges. Use a grounding strap and observe all static

precautions during this procedure. Failure to do so could result in damage

to the SmartSwitch 9000 or the module.

ETHERNET CABLES

1. Insert the RJ-45 adapter at one end of the provided Ethernet cable into the module’s Ethernet

port 1.

2. Insertthe RJ-45 adapter at the otherend oftheEthernet cableinto one ofthe SmartSwitch 9000’s

Ethernet ports.

3. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for Ethernet port 2 if you will be using a second Ethernet connection.

MOD-TAP ADAPTER

Thesystem'sPRI RJ-45adapter uses the international standardof pins 3,4, 5,and 6 fortransmitand

receive. Most T1 lines in the United States and Europe use the traditional 1, 2, 4, and 5 pins. We

provide an RJ-45 to RJ-45 Mod-Tap adapter that will convert between the two wiring systems.
