The DPS Telecom L-Series Protocol Converter interfaces an RS-232 data port to a 20-bit protocol network. The
20-bit hardware interface is either 1200 baud RS-232, or Frequency Shift Keyed (FSK) at 1200 baud with a
center frequency of either 1877 Hz or 9838 Hz.
Note: Hardware interfaces may be sold separately.
The L-Series Protocol Converter with Firmware Version 1.0D is designed to support only one application:
mediating alarm data between the T/Mon or IAM and the Larse Series 1200 remote telemetry units. Each
L-Series Protocol Converter mediates a polling leg of up to 253 Larse Series 1200 remotes.
Note: This device provides a hardware interface to your Larse/Badger RTU network. To poll the network with
an T/Mon or IAM, the Larse Interrogator software module must be installed on your T/MonXM system.

Installation4
Tools Needed4.1
To install the L-Series Protocol Converter, you'll need the following tools:
Phillips No. 2 Screwdriver Small Standard Screwdriver
Computer
Note: You may also need cable-building equipment to make a connector for connecting your Larse/Badger
Series 1200 remote to the L-Series Protocol Converter.

The L-Series Protocol Converter can be mounted in a 19" rack or a 23" rack by using different rack ears for each
size. Two rack ear locations are provided. Attach the appropriate rack ears in the flush-mount or rear-mount
locations shown in Figure 4.1.

To connect the L-Series Protocol Converter to a power source, follow these steps:
NOTE: Do not apply –48V Power to the L-Series Protocol Converter until all power connections in Step
1 through Step 6 have been completed.
NOTE: Use proper lug terminations on all power and frame ground connections to the L-Series Protocol
Converter power input terminal strips.
1. Remove the fuse from the front panel and turn off the power supply when connecting the power from the
power lead.
2. Connect a –48 VDC line to the –BATT terminal and the ground to the GND terminal.
3. For earth/frame grounding, connect a copper wire to the FRM GND terminal. (DPS Telecom recommends at
least a 14 gauge wire.) Connect the other end of the wire to an earth/frame ground.
4. Turn on main power with the L-Series Protocol Converter fuse still removed.
5. Connect the black common lead of a volt meter to ground and the red lead to –BATT. The meter should read
the battery level (–43 to –53 VDC). If not, check your power supply.
6. Do not reinsert the L-Series Protocol Converter's fuse (powering up the unit) until all other connections have
been made.

The L-Series Protocol Converter's two DB25 network connectors are located on the back panel, as shown in
Figure 4.3.
Connect the LarScan Series 1200 RTU to the male DB25 connector labeled "RTU." Pinouts for the L-Series
Protocol Converter are shown in Figure 4.4.

Connect the T/Mon or IAM to the female DB25 connector labeled "NOC." Pinouts for the RS-232 connector are
shown in Figure 4.6.

The L-Series Protocol Converter's DB9 craft port is located on the front panel. The craft port is used to connect a
PC to the L-Series Protocol Converter for modem tuning and firmware downloads. To connect to the craft port,
use the included DB9M-to-DB9F download cable.
Note: The craft port and the RS-232 port use the same circuit. Connecting to the craft port disables all RS-232
polling on the leg connected to the L-Series Protocol Converter. Before connecting a PC to the craft port,
disconnect the RS-232 connection on the back panel.
