Chapter 1: Introduction
Engage Communication BlackBond Link Encryptor User's Guide
1
Chapter 1
Introduction
The BlackBond User's Guide provides the information users require to install and operate the
BlackBond family of products developed and manufactured by Engage Communication Inc.
BlackBond AES Link Encryption Family
BlackBond T1/E1 models encrypt data on full T1 or E1 circuits. (Models that support fractional T1/
E1's are to be released soon!)
The following BlackBond models are equipped with built-in data encryption:
BlackBond T1 AES Link Encryptor
BlackBond E1 AES Link Encryptor
Security
AES Encryption
The BlackBond utilizes the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), with 256 bit keys, to secure sensi-
tive information transmitted over point to point or dial up T1 or E1 communication links.
Key Management
The command, "GENKEY", generates an encryption key which is coded on the second unit to assure
automated key management for timely key transitions.
"ENTER KEY"
Is the command used to place the key code on both units for encryption and unencryption of data
passing between nodes.
Unit Ports and Indicators
Console Port
A console port is provided for direct access to the unit. The port indicator shows that the user is con-
nected.
LAN Interface
The BlackBond T1/E1 models provide a 10/100BaseT interface for local or remote management.
Ports TEL1 and TEL2, (S1 and S2) have indicators, "ENA", that light when the port is available and
the "LNK" indicator shows connectivity.
WAN Interface
BlackBond has 2 ports available for integrated T1 DSU/CSU T1 or E1 connections. Indicators reveal
the port's availability and connectivity status.

About this Guide
Organization
Chapter 1 - Introduction provides an overview of the BlackBond Link Encryptor User's Guide as well
as feature descriptions for the T1, E1 models which make up the BlackBond family.
Chapter 2 - Installation QuickStart provides a concise description of the installation and conguration
process, plus examples to get the experienced user up and running in a minimum of time.
Chapter 3 - Installation of the Black Bond gives a detailed step by step of the installation and congu-
ration of the BlackBond unit. It covers the physical environment and connections required to install
the units then steps the administrator through the conguration process of the console port, LAN con-
nection and the T1/E1 interfaces.
Chapter 4 - Command Line Interface provides a command-by-command description of the upper level
interface as well as the interfaces to the various ports.
Chapter 5 - BlackBond T1/E1: Conguration and Operation discusses the initial conguration and
ongoing operation of the BlackBond T1 and E1 models. Also included is a brief discussion of SNMP
support.
Chapter 6 - Troubleshooting reviews some of the common issues that may occur during installation
and normal operation of the units and provides descriptions of causes and solutions to these issues.
Appendices - BlackBond T1/E1 specications, connector pinouts and crossover wiring details and
includes diagrams of the units.
Glossary - TCP/IP terminology, Networking and Communications denitions.
Intended Audience
This manual is intended for IT administrators. The technical content is written for readers who have
basic computer, telecommunication and networking experience.
It is important that any administrator responsible for the installation and operation of Engage
BlackBond products be familiar with IP networking and data communication concepts, such as net-
work addressing and synchronous serial interfaces. These terms are central to an understanding of
BlackBond functionality, and are covered in the Glossary section.

Chapter 2
Installation QuickStart
This QuickStart Chapter is intended for users who understand how they want their BlackBond in-
stalled and congured and only require the mechanics of performing that conguration.
Communication with the BlackBond Link Encryptor
Console Port
Initial communication with the BlackBond unit is made through the Console port, utilizing the Com-
mand Line Interface, (CLI), detailed in Chapter 4: Command Line Interface. Communication to the
Console port should be set as:
9600 baud, 1 stop bit, no parity, 8 bit xed and ow control none.
The Console port on the BlackBond is an RJ45 jack. It is congured as a DTE port. An RJ45/DB9
adapter is provided with the BlackBond which, in addition to providing a physical interface, performs
the null modem operation permitting direct connection to other DTE equipment, such as COM con-
nections on a PC.
Once a serial connection between a workstation and the BlackBond Console port is established and a
carriage return <CR> is entered, a Login prompt will appear.
The default login is: root.
No password is needed for the initial login.
Telnet
If an IP address has been assigned and a connection established to the BlackBond Ethernet, (LAN1)
port, the user can log into the unit from anywhere on the network, with almost any telnet software and
continue conguration.
Editing and Pasting Congurations
Users of either telnet or console CLI's have the option of editing standard BlackBond congurations in
a text editor and pasting that conguration to the BlackBond. Each example in this chapter includes a
conguration le found on the shipping disk.
Edit the desired conguration listing using a text editor. Connect to the BlackBond through Telnet or
the Console port, then enter the interface conguration mode with the command: cong.
Paste the edited text, comments and all, to the BlackBond then issue the command: save. The
BlackBond will reset and come up with the new conguration.
To save a BlackBond conguration in a text le, for later use, issue the command: show congura-
tion all, and copy the listing to a le.
