INTRODUCTION

This Quick Installation Guide provides instructions about how to make

the physical connections to your Ericsson Multi Service Edge De-

vice HL950 and also how to power up and perform the initial con-

figuration.

For detailed information about management of the HL950, please

refer to the Command Reference Manual which is included on the

supplied CD-ROM.

Prior to connecting and installing any of the equipment, read the

information about Product Care and Maintenance on page 16.

PACKAGE CONTENTS

The HL950 package should include the items listed below. Inventory

the contents and make sure that all parts are included in the package

before proceeding with the installation. If any component is missing

or damaged, please contact the dealer/service provider from which

the equipment was purchased.

Rack mounting kit (including mounting brackets, nut clips and

screws)

Rubber feet (for desktop placement)

C Power cord (country specific)

RJ11 SHDSL cable

RJ45 Ethernet cable

RS232 Console cable

Configuration CD (includes the printable Command Reference

Manual).

For kits including a Legacy V.35/V.36/X.21 Interface Module, one of

the following adapter cables is included:

V.35 dapter cable

V.36 dapter cable

X.21 dapter cable

PLACEMENT

The HL950 can be placed on a flat surface or mounted in a standard

19 inch (48,26 cm) rack. Place the HL950 in a position that offers

access to the interface connectors on the back of the unit.

DESKTOP PLACEMENT

When the HL950 is placed on a flat surface, the rubber feet pro-

vided should be mounted on the bottom of the unit to secure a sta-

ble placement.

RACK MOUNTING

Use the Rack mounting kit provided when mounting the HL950 in

a 19 rack. This kit includes two rack mounting brackets, four nut

clips, four flat head screws and four round head screws.

The HL950 can be rack mounted with either the front or the back of

the chassis facing forward.

There are two sets of mounting holes located on the left and right

sides of the chassis. The forward-most set is used to mount the chas-

sis with the front facing forward; the other set is for mounting the unit

with the back facing forward.

NOTE! When mounting the HL950 in a rack, lea e a minimum of 1

inch (2,54 cm) space abo e the unit to ensure proper cooling.

Attaching Brackets

Use the screws provided to attach the mounting brackets to the chas-

sis as shown in the applicable figure on the next page:

Installation in Rack

Install the chassis in the rack using the screws provided. Use two

screws for each side.

6 Placement

Grounding the Unit

NOTE! When the HL950 is rack mounted it is recommended that

you ground the unit as described below.

Ground the unit by connecting a ground strap cable to the earth

(ground) terminal on the back of the chassis. See figure below.

Clamp or screw down the other end of the ground strap cable to a

suitable grounding point at your site.

CABLE CONNECTION

This chapter describes the cable connection for all interfaces.

CONNECT A CONSOLE TERMINAL

The HL950 needs to be connected to an SCII terminal in order to

perform the initial configuration.

Connect the RS 3 Console cable provided to the CONSOLE port

on the rear panel of the HL950.

Connect the other end to the serial port on your PC (e.g. Com1).

CONNECT THE ETHERNET NETWORK

The HL950 needs to be connected to a PC in order to perform the

initial configuration.

Connect one end of the RJ45 Ethernet cable provided to the

Ethernet 1 port on the rear panel of the HL950.

Connect the other end of the cable to your PC.

The Ethernet 2 port is reserved for future use.

Description of the Link/ ctivity indicators:

Link (L) - Lit when the Ethernet link is established.

Activity (A) - Lit momentarily when data is received or transmitted.

8 Cable Connection

CONNECT THE WAN INTERFACE

Connect the RJ11 SHDSL cable provided to the SHDSL 1 port,

the RJ11 plug fits into the RJ45 connector.

Connect the other end to the network operators SHDSL jack.

CONNECT THE LEGACY INTERFACE

The HL950 is delivered with either a Legacy V.35/V.36/X.21 Interface

Module or a Legacy E1 Interface Module for connection to the local

network. For all legacy interfaces, the unit will act as a DCE unit.

Legacy V.35 / V.36 / X. 1 Interface Module

Connect the Adapter cable provided to the Sub-D 60 pin connec-

tor located on the Legacy V.35/V.36/X.21Interface Module on the rear

of the HL950.

NOTE! There is a specific cable for each legacy mode.

Connect the other end of the dapter cable to the V.35/V.36/X.21

connector on the existing legacy equipment.

NOTE! Connector 1 is implemented for single channel SHDSL o er

one twisted pair or dual channel SHDSL o er two twisted pairs in the

same cable. For dual-channel SHDSL with separate cables for each

channel, connect the RJ11 SHDSL cable (pro ided) to connector 1

and a second RJ11 SHDSL cable (not pro ided) to connector 2.

Connect the other end of both cables to the network operator's

SHDSL jacks.

Description of the Link/ ctivity indicators:

Link (L) - Blinks during link establishment. Lit when the SHDSL link

is established.

Activity (A) - Lit momentarily when data is received or transmitted.

Legacy E1 Interface Module

For 1 0 ohms balanced operation, connect a 120 ohms (default

strapping) twisted pair cable (not provided) with four wires (2 pairs)

to the RJ45 connector located on the E1 Interface Module on the

rear panel of the HL950.

For 75 ohms unbalanced operation, connect two 75 ohms co-

axial cables (not provided) to the DIN 1.0/2.3 connectors located on

the E1 Interface Module on the rear panel of the HL950.

NOTE! Remember to change the strapping on the E1 card when

using 75 ohms unbalanced operation. The procedure is described

below.

Connect the other end of the cable to your E1 transmission equip-

ment.

Description of the Carrier/Sync indicators:

Carrier - Lit when receive carrier detected.

Sync - Lit when link synchronization is obtained.

Strapping instructions

When using 75 ohms unbalanced operation, change the strap-

ping on the E1 card according to the following instructions:

1. Power down the unit, if applicable.

. Ground yourself and place the HL950 on a grounded surface.

3. Identify the E1 interface module bracket on the rear of the unit

(see figure above). Unscrew the two screws and gently remove

the E1 card from the chassis.

4. Insert the jumpers provided on LL pins (marked JP1 to JP10)

as shown in the figure below. (Default configuration for balanced

operation is NO jumpers inserted).

5. Insert the board; ensure that the connector pins and holes match

each other. Then push the board firmly until the bracket rests

against the unit housing.

6. Insert the two screws and tighten them.

7. Connect and power up the unit.

CONNECT TO AN AC POWER OUTLET

Ensure that the on/off switch on the rear panel of the HL950 is OFF .

Connect the AC Power cord provided to the power jack on the rear

panel of the HL950. Plug the other end into an C power source.

The HL950 operates in the 100-240 voltage range (50/60Hz).

The HL950 may be connected to mains power via an Uninterruptable

Power Supply (UPS) for higher availability.
