Brief Description

The Power Select feature of specific Fujitsu Siemens Computers mainboards

(such as the D2703-S) offers additional power supply options; this allows an

integration of these boards in various applications, in particular in industrial

environments.

Benefits

•Flexible options for supplying operating power to the mainboard

▬Standard ATX supply via onboard connector

▬24 V DC supply via onboard connector

▬24 V DC supply via external connector / AC adapter

•These options enable effective system integration solutions particularly in industrial environments where

standard solutions can’t meet specific requirements (e.g. SELV environment).

Functional Description

The Power Select feature of specific Fujitsu Technology Solutions mainboards provides additional power supply

options for the system beyond the standard ATX power supply method. This is useful e.g. in industrial

applications where tough requirements exist concerning chassis and housing design; these requirements often

can’t be met when using standard components for mainboard, power supply and housing.

The D2703-S is a Fujitsu Technology Solutions mainboard with Power Select; this board is used as an example

in the following sections to illustrate the technology.

Power Select offers three different power supply options:

•Standard ATX supply via onboard connector

•24 V DC supply via onboard connector

•24 V DC supply via external connector / AC adapter

Typical Application Fields for Power Select

Standard ATX power supply

•Industrial designs based on standard or open-frame ATX compliant power supplies

•Any designs that require enhanced power for additional components (high-current controllers, several hard

disk drives or optical drives, etc.)

24 V DC supply via onboard connector

•Industrial applications using an existing 24 V infrastructure

•Applications that require 24 V supply via lockable power supply connector

•Avoids need for expensive DC/DC-converters in applications that require SELV (= Safety Extra Low

Voltage) according IEC60950-1

24 V DC supply via external connector / AC adapter

•Enables small chassis design (no space for power supply required)

•Enables silent chassis designs (no effort for cooling of internal power supply)

•Best choice for small and low-power system design

•Enables design with reduced safety risk and effort by using approved AC adapter according IEC60950-1

Power Select Specifications

Important Note

•The internal power supply input (ATX connector) and external 24 V DC input shall under no circumstances

be operated simultaneously, as this will cause irreparable damage to the mainboard.

•If for any reason the power supply input is changed from internal to external or vice versa (e.g. for

evaluation tests), make sure to wait at least 5 minutes after disconnecting the internal power input and

connecting the external power input or vice versa. Otherwise, the remaining charge of onboard capacitors

may cause irreparable damage to the mainboard.

Any damage caused by misuse of the power supply inputs is excluded from the standard warranty. Fujitsu

Technology Solutions cannot be held liable for any damages that result from inappropriate use of the power

supply inputs.

Notes to Pin Assigment

•The mainboard D2703-S uses pin 18 of the ATX connector for an internal single 24 V DC supply (see

section “24 V DC power supply option” below for details).

•Typically pin 18 of a standard ATX power supply is “not connected”. Former ATX power supplies provided -

5 V via pin 18 which is no longer required for state-of-the-art mainboards.

•If the ATX power supply used for a specific implementation still delivers -5 V via pin 18, this causes no

damage to the mainboard D2703-S.

•In general, pin 3 of an ATX power supply is connected to GND. The mainboard D2703-S uses pin 3 to

detect if an ATX power supply is connected or not.

•Instead of a standard 20-pin ATX power supply, a 24-pin BTX power supply can be connected to the

mainboard D2703-S as well. Pins 21 to 24 will not be used.

The following table lists the requirements for the electrical characteristics that must be met by an ATX power

supply to operate a D2703-S mainboard properly. Please also pay attention to the specific notes.

•During power-on/power-off, the power supply must fulfill the general ATX requirements regarding ramp-

up/down timing for all supply voltages and the Powergood output.

•The ATX power supply input of the D2703-S has capacitive loads which need to be covered by the power

supply during power ramp-up. See the table below for the capacitance values on each voltage rail.

•The ATX power supply must be approved according to IEC60950-1.

Notes to ATX Power Supply Requirements

1) The ATX power supply must support these minimum load conditions for a mainboard incl. processor and

memory if there is no power consumption by any additional components (e.g. drives, LVDS, PCI

adapters, USB devices)

2) Configuration: Turion TL-52; 2 x 1 GB, Windows XP Idle mode (w/o any add-in cards, w/o LVDS)

3) Configuration: Turion TL-66 (max. 35 W), 2 x 2 GB, Windows XP, 100% processor load (w/o any add-in

cards, w/o LVDS)

4) In order to support any USB devices in all operating conditions the power supply should be able to

provide 2 A @ +5 VAUX

24V DC Power Supply Option (internal connector)

The ATX power supply connector previously offered the option to provide -5 V via pin 18 to the mainboard, which

is no longer used for current designs. Thus, the mainboard D2703-S can be powered via pin 18 of the ATX power

supply connector with 24 V DC. The return path (GND) can be connected to pin 17.

24V DC Power Supply Option (external connector)

The mainboard D2703-S also provides a DC connector at the rear I/O shield for an external AC adapter.

Figure 24 V DC Power Supply Option, External Connector

The DC plugs used with this connector should have the following characteristics (see also figure below):

•Inner/outer diameter 2.5 / 5.5 mm

•Contact Length 10 to 11 mm

•Straight or right-angle plug
