Component Features

Before Reading This Familiarization Guide

Before reading this familiarization guide, you should first read the HP Kayak

XU Series 0441 PC Workstation Familiarization Guide. It contains details

about the Kayak PC Workstation package, system board layout, and different

steps to help you repair the PC Workstation. All the information about the

different hardware tasks and the MaxiLife firmware for the XU Series 0441

is also valid for the HP Kayak XW Series 0480 PC Workstation.

The only major difference between these two models is the video controller.

The HP Kayak XW Series 0480 model is supplied with an HP VISUALIZE fx6

AGP video controller, while the HP Kayak XU Series 0441 model contains

the ELSA GLoria Synergy AGP video controller.

This familiarization guide contains information that is only specific to the HP

VISUALIZE fx6 AGP graphics board. This powerful graphics board includes

a hardware acceleration for many functions used to generate 3D graphics.

Typical usage is for CAD/CAM applications, visual simulation and complex

3D modelling.

Introduction the HP VISUALIZE fx6 AGP Graphics Board

This familiarization guide contains information that is only specific to the HP

VISUALIZE fx6 AGP graphics board. This powerful graphics board includes

hardware acceleration for many functions used to generate 3D graphics.

Typical usage is for CAD/CAM applications, visual simulation and complex

3D modelling.

There are no switch settings on the HP VISUALIZE fx6 video board.

Hardware manipulation is only required for the installation of the texture

module accessory, which is described in the following sections.

NOTE Always ensure that the diagnostics utility, described on page 12, has been

used before proceeding to change a suspected faulty video board.

The HP VISUALIZE fx6 Texture Module Accessory

The HP Kayak XW Series 0480 model contains an HP VISUALIZE fx6 video

board with 18 MB of SGRAM installed memory.

An additional 32 MB of SDRAM texture memory can be added by installing a

texture module. This texture module (D6795A) is only available as an

accessory for the HP VISUALIZE fx6 video board.

NOTE A similar texture module, supplying 18 MB of memory, exists for the HP

VISUALIZE fx4 video board used in the previous HP Kayak XW PC

Workstation models. These two texture modules cannot be interchanged.

The texture module for the HP VISUALIZE fx6 video board has two

connector strips, which plug into two matching sockets. If there is no

texture module installed, one of these sockets (the longer one of the two)

will contain a terminator. The second socket remains empty. The video

board will not work without a terminator installed.

NOTE The sockets are concealed beneath a short strengthening bar, which should

be removed before installing the texture module.

To install the texture module, you must first remove the HP VISUALIZE fx6

video board. When you have installed the texture module, reboot the PC

workstation. The texture module is automatically detected by the HP

VISUALIZE fx6 driver.

If you require more detailed explanation on how to install the texture

module, refer to the HP VISUALIZE fx6 Texture Module Installation Guide,

which is delivered with the accessory. The following are just basic steps to

remove and replace the HP VISUALIZE fx6 board.

Two connector strips which plug into two

matching sockets on the VISUALIZE fx6 video

board.

Removing and Reinstalling the VISUALIZE fx6 Video Board

Removing the HP VISUALIZE fx6 Video Board

1Remove the two accessory board slot screws from the HP VISUALIZE fx6

board. Then remove the screw from the support bracket.

2Use the strengthening bracket to carefully remove the HP VISUALIZE fx6

board from the PC workstation.

NOTE Due to the size of the HP VISUALIZE fx6 board, it could prove to be quite

difficult to remove. Do not try to force it when removing it from the

connectors, but remove it gently. If you do encounter any problems, check

that there isn’t anything that could be blocking it (for example, cables near

the rear end of the video board).

Reinstalling the HP VISUALIZE fx6 Video Board

1Ensure that any cables near the rear end of the video board are well clear

of the AGP and PCI slots.

2Check that the AGP and PCI connectors are installed correctly in their

sockets before securing it in place with the two accessory board screws.

Ensure that the support bracket has been put back in place.

3Reboot the PC workstation. The texture module is automatically detected

by the HP VISUALIZE fx6 driver.

Installing and Configuring the HP VISUALIZE fx6 Driver

An OpenGL video driver is available for HP VISUALIZE fx6 video board for

use under Windows NT4.0 only. Without the appropriate drivers, the PC

Workstation will only operate in VGA mode, meaning that the 3D hardware

accessory will not be available.

NOTE Video drivers are regularly updated by Hewlett-Packard for feature and

performance improvements. When installing a driver, or diagnosing an error,

you are strongly recommended to check that you have the latest driver

version. These can be found on the HP World Wide Web site:

http//www.hp.com/go/kayaksupport

Installing the OpenGL Video Driver

Installation of the driver is done through the standard process:

Display Properties / Settings / Display Type

To check the driver version, click the About tab in the Display Properties

dialog box.

Installed fx6 driver

version

If the texture module

(optional upgrade,

part number D6795A)

is installed, it is also

displayed
