1.2 System Operating Principles
The Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System uses both mains electrical power and solar thermal
energy. The Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System always requires mains electrical power to
operate ans and electrical control components.
The Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System uses solar thermal energy as an energy source to
help maintain the re rigeration process which in turn reduces the amount o electrical energy
required to run the compressor.
The Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System operates under the same principles as a
Conventional Air Conditioning System where re rigeration takes place as a result o the phase
transition o the re rigerant.
The di erence between a Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System and a Conventional System is
how the vapour is changed back into a liquid state in the re rigeration cycle.
A Conventional System uses a compressor to increase the pressure o the re rigerant when it’s
in a vapour state so that when it enters the condenser coil the combination o pressure and
cooling rom ambient air condenses it into a liquid in the coil. The change o state o re rigerant
begins to take place approximately two thirds o the way down the condenser. The Koolsola
Solar Air Conditioning System improves on this basic method by using solar thermal energy
collected in a solar collector to add thermal energy to the re rigerant vapour. By using this
method it reduces the amount o compression required to achieve the re rigeration cycle, as
well as utilising more o the cooling ace o the condenser coil.
By reducing the amount o compression required to achieve the re rigeration process the
Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System can use an undersized compressor in comparison to a
Conventional System. Similarly i enough solar thermal energy is being collected and utilised the
compressor will run less o ten in a Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System than a Conventional
System.
The Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System incorporates o centre an blade technology,
insulated oam ducts and high per ormance brand name compressors to achieve optimum
per ormance at a minimum level o noise. The Koolsola Solar Air Conditioning System typically
creates 10dBA less noise than a Conventional System.
