FP-AO-210

8-Channel, 10 V Analog Output Module

Features

The FP-AO-210 is a FieldPoint analog output module with the

following features:

• Eight 0–10 V outputs

• 0.2 V over-range ability

• 12-bit resolution digital-to-analog converters

• Onboard diagnostics, including current limit indicators

• Hot plug and play operation

• 3,000 Vrms input-to-output isolation

• Double insulated for 250 V safe working voltage

• Up to 1 kOhm load impedance (with optional external power

supply)

• –40 to +70 °C operation

Use this document to install the FP-AO-210 and learn about its

features and characteristics. For more information about

configuring and accessing the FP-AO-210 over a network, refer to

the user manual for the FieldPoint network module you are using

with the FP-AO-210.

Install Your Module

The FP-AO-210 mounts on a FieldPoint terminal base (FP-TB-xx)

unit. Because of its hot plug and play operation, you can install the

FP-AO-210 onto a powered terminal base without disturbing the

operation of other modules or terminal bases. The FP-AO-210

receives operating power from the terminal base.

To install the FP-AO-210, refer to Figure 1 and complete the

following steps:

1. Slide the terminal base key to either position X (used for any

module) or position 2 (used for the FP-AO-210 module). Using

position 2 helps prevent accidentally inserting the wrong

module onto a terminal base.

2. Align the FP-AO-210 alignment slots with the guide rails on

the terminal base.

3. Press firmly to seat the FP-AO-210 on the terminal base. When

the module is firmly seated, the terminal base latch locks it into

place.

4. Optional: Connect an external power supply to the V and C

terminals of the terminal base. Refer to the section Voltage

Output Circuit for more information.

Prepare Your Field Wiring

The terminal base provides connections for both an optional

external power supply and for the eight output channels. The

positive terminal of the external power supply is connected to the

V terminal, and the negative (or common) terminal is connected to

the C terminal. Each channel has an output terminal, Vout; a

common terminal, COM (internally connected to the C terminal);

and a supply terminal, Vsup (internally connected to the V

terminal). You can connect either the V or the Vsup terminal to

external power when using devices which require supplementary

power. Figures 2 and 3 show the basic wiring connection. The

connection shown in Figure 2 is capable of sourcing and sinking

1 mA, while the connection shown in Figure 3 is capable of

sourcing 10 mA and sinking 1 mA.

Table 1 lists the terminal assignments for the signals of each

channel.

Voltage Output Circuit

The FP-AO-210 output circuit is a current limited voltage source

capable of sourcing (flowing out of the Vout terminal to theload) or

sinking (flowing into the Vout terminal from the load) current. The

FP-AO-210 internal circuitry limits the magnitude of this current

to 1 mA. You can obtain up to 10 mA sourcing current by adding

an optional external power supply. The FP-AO-210 operates with

an external power supply from 15 to 30 VDC.

The FP-AO-210 updates the output channels as new values are sent

to it by the network module. The time it takes to respond to a

change on a single channel is between 3 and 6 ms. The response

time to changes on all eight channels is 24 to 27 ms.

The FP-AO-210 has several unique features that promote reliable

operation, ease of use, and solid performance. These features are

described below.

Output Range

The FP-AO-210 has an output range of 0–10 V. The factory default

power-up setting for each channel is 0 V. The FP-AO-210 has a

built-in over-range capability of 0.2 V; thus, the actual full-scale

range of each channel is 0–10.2 V. This extended range allows the

FP-AO-210 to compensate for span and offset errors in field

devices.

Current Limit Detection

Each channel on the FP-AO-210 has a monitoring circuit which

detects the amount of current flowing into (sinking) or out of

(sourcing) the channel. If this value exceeds the maximum

allowable (1 mA with no external supply; 10 mA with external

supply), the circuit lights a red STATUS indicator for each

affected channel, reports the error to the network module, and

adjusts the output voltage so that only the maximum allowed

current flows. The error is reported before the output is adjusted.

The indicator might start to dimly light as the limit is approached.

Over-Voltage Protection

Each FP-AO-210 output terminal Vout is protected against damage

resulting from accidental connection to other channels’ output

terminals. Also, you can connect one or more channel output

terminalsdirectly to anexternalvoltagesourceindefinitelywithout

causing damage or improper operation of other channels, as long

as the maximum voltage does not exceed the range of –10 to

+20 VDC referenced to the C and COM terminals.

Status Indicators

Figure 4 shows the module label and status indicators. To see

wiring diagrams for the output channels, remove the insertable

label.

After you insert the module into a terminal base (and apply power),

the module runs an internal boot-up sequence and self test. If this

test passes, the green POWER indicator lights and the FP-AO-210

informs the network module of its presence. When the network

module recognizes the FP-AO-210, it sends initial configuration

information to the FP-AO-210. After processing this initial

information, the green READY indicator lights and the

FP-AO-210 is in its normal operating mode. In addition to the

green POWER and READY indicators, each channel has a red,

numbered, error status indicator. For more information about error

status indicators, refer to the section Current Limit Detection in

this document.

Safety Guidelines

Caution Before you attempt to connect ANYcircuits that

may contain hazardous voltages to the FP-AO-210, read

the following information.

This section describes the isolation of the FP-AO-210 and its

compliance with international safety standards. The FP-AO-210

field wiring connections are isolated from the backplane provided

by the terminal base with an optical and galvanic isolation barrier

designed and tested to provide protection against fault voltages of

up to 3,000 Vrms. In addition, the FP-AO-210 provides double

insulation (compliant with IEC 1010-1) for working

common-mode voltages of 250 Vrms. Safety standards (such as

those published by UL and IEC) require the use of double

insulation between hazardous voltages and any human-accessible

parts or circuits.

Never attempt to use any isolation product between human

accessible parts (such as DIN rails or monitoring stations) and

circuits which may be at hazardous potentials under normal

conditions, unless the product is specifically designed for such an

application, as is the FP-AO-210.

When you use a product like the FP-AO-210 in applications with

hazardous potentials, follow these guidelines to make sure your

total system is safe:

• The safety isolation of the FP-AO-210 is from input to output,

not between channels on the same module. If any of the

channels on a module are wired at a hazardous potential, make

sure that all other devices or circuits connected to that module

are properly insulated from human contact.

• Do not share the external power supply voltages (V and C on

the terminal base) with other devices (including other

FieldPoint devices), unless those devices are isolated from

human contact.

• As with any hazardous voltage wiring, make sure that all

wiring and connections meet with applicable electrical codes

and common sense practices. Mount terminal bases in an area,

position, or cabinet that prevents accidental or unauthorized

access to wiring that carries hazardous voltages.

• The isolation of the FP-AO-210 is certified as double insulated

for normal operating voltages of 250 Vrms. Do not use the

FP-AO-210 as the only isolating barrier between human

contact and working voltages of more than 250 Vrms.
