Important

• Please read the instructions for use in conjunction with the

illustrations before using the appliance.

• Before using for the first time remove any sticker or protective

foil from the soleplate. Clean the soleplate with a soft cloth.

• Before using for the first time, check if the voltage rating on

the typeplate corresponds to the mains voltage in your home.

• Use an earthed wall socket.

• Never use the appliance if it is damaged in any way.

• Unplug the appliance from the mains:

- before filling the iron with water or pouring out the remaining

water after use;

- before cleaning the iron.

• When you have finished ironing and also when leaving the iron

even for a short while:

- set the steam control to position O;

- stand the iron on its end;

- remove the mains plug from the wall socket.

• Do not put vinegar, starch, chemically descaled water or

descaling agents in the water reservoir.

• The cordset should not be allowed to touch the soleplate when

it is hot.

• The ejected steam is hot and therefore hazardous. Never direct

the steam towards people.

• Always keep the iron in a safe dry place, standing on its end.

• Never immerse the iron in water.

• Some parts of the iron have been slightly greased and, as a

result, the iron may slightly smoke when switched on for the

first time. After a short while, however, this will cease.

• If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it must only be

replaced by a special cord or assembly available from the

manufacturer or its service agent.

• This appliance is not intended for use by young or infirm

persons without supervision.

• Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do

not play with the appliance.

Ironing temperature guide

• Follow the ironing instructions on the garment label. If these instructions

are missing but you do know the kind of fabric, then see the table.

• This table is valid for garment only and is not applicable to any applied

finish, gloss etc. Textile to which some kind of finish has been applied

(gloss, wrinkle, relief etc.) can best be ironed at lower temperatures.

• Sort the laundry out according to ironing temperature first: wool with

wool, cotton with cotton, etc.

• The iron heats up quicker than it cools down. Therefore, start ironing

the articles requiring the lowest temperature such as those made of

synthetic fibres.

• If the fabric consists of various kinds of fibres, always select the lowest

ironing temperature of the composition of those fibres. If, for example,

an article consists of 60% polyester and 40% cotton, it should be ironed

at the temperature indicated for polyester (1) and without steam.

• If you do not know what kind(s) of fabric(s) the article has been made

of, find a spot which will be invisible when wearing or using the article.

Try out the ironing temperature which is most suitable there. Start at a

relatively low temperature.

• Pure woollen fabrics (100% wool) may be pressed with the iron set to a

steam position. Preferably set the steam control (B) to maximum

position. Use a dry pressing cloth.

• When steam-ironing woollen fabrics, shining of the fabric may occur.

This can be prevented by turning the article inside out and ironing the

reverse side.

• Velvet and other fabrics which rapidly acquire shiny spots should be

ironed in one direction only (with the nap) applying light pressure.

Always keep the appliance moving while ironing.

• Iron the reverse side of synthetic materials and silk to prevent shining

spots. Do not use the spray to prevent stains.

Filling with water (for steam-ironing and spraying)

- Remove the mains plug from the wall socket before filling (or emptying)

the iron with water. Set the steam control (B) to position O(= no steam)

(fig. 2).

- Fill the filling cup (M) with water (max. 200 ml). Hold the iron in a tilted

position and pour the water into the filling aperture (fig. 3) to the

maximum level.

• Fill the iron with normal tap water when using it for the first time.

• For refilling, you can also use tap water. However, if the water is very

hard, it is advisable to use distilled water.

Do not put vinegar, starch, chemically descaled water or

descaling agents in the water reservoir!

Setting the temperature (see table)

- Stand the iron on its end.

- Set the temperature control (A) to the correct ironing temperature

(fig. 4).

- Insert the mains plug into the wall socket.

- After the amber temperature pilot light (I) first has gone out and has

come on again, you may start ironing.

•For type HI 342 (“Auto off” version) only: if the appliance is left

motionless for a while, it will switch off automatically and the red pilot

light (O) will start to blink. Pick up the iron or move it lightly when this

occurs. Refer to paragraph “Auto off” for details.

• The amber pilot light (I) will come on from time to time during ironing.

• If you set the temperature control (A) to a lower setting after ironing at a

high temperature, do not begin again before the amber pilot light (I) has

come on and has gone out again. This is to prevent scorching on your

garment.

Ironing without steam

- Set the steam control (B) to position O(= no steam) (fig. 2).

• To switch on the iron, refer to paragraph “Setting the temperature”.

Steam-ironing (see table)

• Ensure that there is enough water in the water reservoir.

- Set the steam control (fig. 5):

No steam setting (O) for temperature settings MIN to 2.

Steam setting (q) for temperature settings 2to 3.

Maximum steam setting (w) for temperature settings 3to MAX.

• Water may leak from the soleplate if a too low temperature (2and

lower) has been selected.

• To switch on the iron, refer to paragraph “Setting the temperature”.

Extra Steam 0(only type HI 312) (see table)

• This feature provides extra steam to remove stubborn creases.

• Apply Extra Steam only at 3to MAX temperature setting.

- Set the steam control to the highest steam position w(fig. 6).

- Press and hold the Extra Steam button 0for a few seconds

(max. 5 seconds) (fig. 7). Then release the button.

- Wait at least 1 minute before applying Extra Steam again.

This prevents water dripping from the soleplate.

Spraying T (see table)

- To remove stubborn creases at any temperature, push the spray

button T (D) a couple of times to damp the laundry (fig. 8).

• Ensure that there is enough water in the water reservoir.

Shot-of-Steam 9(only type HI 322, 332 and 342) (see table)

• By pressing the Shot-of-Steam button 9(F), a powerful “shot” of

steam is emitted from the soleplate. This can be very useful e.g.

when removing stubborn creases.

• The shot-of-steam facility can be used only at temperature settings

higher than 2.

- Press and release the shot-of-steam button 9(F) (fig. 9).

Beware of the hot and powerful steam!

- Allow the appliance to heat up for approx. 1 minute after you have

applied 5 consecutive “shots” of steam. This prevents water dripping

from the soleplate.

Vertical Shot-of-steam 9(only type HI 332 and 342)

(see table)

• Shot-of-steam can also be applied when holding the iron in a vertical

position (fig. 10). This is useful for removing creases from hanging

clothes, curtains etc.

• The vertical Shot-of-steam facility can only be used at temperature

settings 3 to MAX.

“Auto off” (automatic safety shut-off) (type HI 342)

• The iron has an electronic safety device which switches off the heating

element automatically if the iron is left motionless for a while. When the

iron is first connected to the mains, this will happen after 2 minutes.

- To indicate that the iron has shut off, the red “Auto off” pilot light (O) will

blink after 30 seconds in a horizontal position or 8 minutes in a vertical

position (fig.11).

- Pick up the iron or move it lightly to heat it up again. The red “Auto off”

pilot light (O) will go off. The amber temperature pilot light (I) will come

on. When the amber pilot light is off, the iron is ready for use.

- To prevent water dripping from the soleplate in horizontal resting

position, set the steam control dial to position Oor stand the iron on its

end if the appliance is left unattended for a while.

Self-cleaning »

• The iron has a self-clean function to remove scale and impurities.

• Apply Self-clean once every two weeks. If the water used is very hard,

Self-clean should be applied more frequently.

- Stand the iron on its end.

- Set the steam control (B) to position O.

- Set the temperature control dial (A) to MAX.

- Fill the water reservoir (K) to maximum (MAX) level.

- Plug in the iron to the mains, allow the iron to heat up.

- When the amber pilot light (I) goes off, unplug the iron.

- Hold the appliance horizontally over a sink (fig. 12).

- Set the steam control to position »(Self-clean).

The steam control will spring up slightly.

- Pull the steam control up slightly (fig. 13).

- Boiling water and steam will now come out of the holes in the soleplate.

Impurities and scale (if any) are washed away with it.

- Move the iron forwards and backwards while this happens.

- You can pull the steam control further upwards to remove the steam

control needle (fig. 14). It is then possible to remove any scale from the

needle. For this purpose you may use vinegar.

Avoid bending or damaging the steam control needle!

- Replace the steam control needle. Insert the point of the needle exactly

in the centre of the aperture and fit the small notch at the side into the

spacing (fig. 15).

- Press the steam control (fig. 16).

- Set the steam control to position O.

Do not put vinegar, starch, chemically descaled water or

descaling agents in the water reservoir!

After self-cleaning

- Stand the iron on its end.

- Plug the iron into the mains to dry up the soleplate.

- When the amber pilot light (I) goes off, unplug the iron.

- Move the iron gently over a piece of used cloth to remove water stain.

Cool down the iron for storage.
