The LS 3603-I265A acknowledges and exe-

cutes RS-232 parameter configuration com-

mands, beeper control commands, and LED

control commands.

The scanner contains custom parameter de-

faults provided in the Parameter Definition Ta-

bles.

The new Continuous Laser On parameter puts

the scanner into a continuous scan mode.

When this parameter is enabled, the scanner

stays on as if it were in an Intellistand and re-

mains in a fast scan until the scan stand time-

out value expires. It then enters a slower

“blink” mode. The laser enters a fast scan

mode again at the next trigger pull.

Custom Features

The LS 3603-I265A allows an RS-232 host to

send parameter configuration commands,

beeper control commands, and LED control

command.

The host communicates with the scanner by

sending a Host Message. A Host Message is a

string that contains an STX, the total string

length, one or more Host Commands, an ETX,

and an LRC for the string.

RS-232 Host Mode

The scanner must be set for RS-232 (Standard)

Host Interface to accept configuration com-

mands and requests. RS-232 Host Interface is

the default interface.

Note that the scanner trigger must be pressed

after powerup before RS-232 communication

can be established with the host.

Host Message

When the LS 3603 is in RS-232 Host Mode, it

accepts Host Messages that contain Host

Command Strings. The format of the Host

Message is as follows:

Where:

STX = 02h

L1,L2,L3 = Three byte hexadecimal length

of data from STX - LRC. Each

byte of the hexadecimal length

is sent as an ASCII character.

For example, a length of 13

decimal = 00D hex, and

30h,30h,44h ASCII.

ETX = 03h

LRC = This check digit is the exclusive

OR (XOR) of all characters in

the string excluding the STX

character, but including the

ETX character.

The maximum length of the host message is

550 bytes.

Host Command String

Each Host Command String is of the format:

L1,L2,L3 = Three byte hexadecimal length

of Host Command String, from

first byte of host command to

last byte of parameter value.

Host Command = Used to specify command.

Param Group = Used to identify parameter

group.

Param ID1 = Two byte hexadecimal value

Param ID2 transmitted as ASCII, used to

identify parameter offset within

the group.

Param Value = One byte hexadecimal number

Any other value for a host command causes an

error condition and a NAK string is transmit-

ted.

Note: The parameter commands only affect

the RS-232 host parameters; not the wand or

Synapse host parameters.

The LS 3603 accepts multiple single and group

parameter change commands within one host

message, and up to 25 host commands within

one host message. The scanner only accepts

one of the following host commands within a

host message: reset defaults, upload all param-

eters, and software ID request. The specific

host message for the single host commands

that don’t contain variable data are as follows:

Note: All n/a fields must contain a 00h value.

Multiple host commands are verified and exe-

cuted until an error occurs. Once an error oc-

curs a NAK STRING is sent to the host and

further commands are ignored. More specifi-

cally, if a host message is sent to the scanner

that includes three changes to a single parame-

ter host commands, and an error is found in

the second command:

• The first host command is verified and

executed - the single parameter is

changed

• The second command is found to con-

tain an error - NAK STRING is sent

• The third command is ignored.

ACK String

When the LS 3603 receives a host message it

responds to the host to let the host know if the

command was valid. If a configuration com-

mand was successful, the LS 3603 sends an

ACK STRING of the format:

<L1><L2><L3>= Three byte hexadecimal length of

the data string from STX - LRC.

ACK = 06h

data = If the user performed a download

command that did not require in-

formation to be sent to the host

(Change Params or Reset De-

faults) the data is a string of num-

bers that represent the command

values successfully implemented.

If the user requested information

via an upload params or software

ID request, that information is

sent.

If the user downloaded a host message that

contained two host command strings, one to

change a single parameter and one to change a

group of parameters, the ACK String data

would be 01 (30h,31h) to represent the single

(command 0) and group (command 1) com-

mands. The ACK String would be:

<STX><009><ACK><01><ETX><LRC>.

The ASCII representation of this string is:

02h, 30h, 30h, 39h, 06h, 30h, 31h, 03h, LRC.

NAK String

If the download was not successful for any rea-

son (LRC incorrect or the data was invalid) an

error condition occurs and the LS 3603 re-

sponds with a NAK STRING of the format:

Where:

<L1><L2><L3>= Three byte hexadecimal length of

the data string from STX - LRC.

The length is 11 decimal = 0B hex

= 30h,30h,42h.

NAK = 15h

Reason A (41h)= Invalid length, the ETX

was not found after the specified

length of a single download com-

mand (defaults, full param down-

load, upload requests), or not

enough data for specified length.

B (42h)= Invalid host command.

C (43h)= Invalid parameter

group.

D (44h)= Invalid parameter iden-

tification.

E (45h) = Invalid parameter val-

ue.

F (46h) = Invalid LRC.

G (47h) = Invalid STX.

H (48h) = Invalid multiple com-

mands (sent to host if single host

command is not send by itself).

<error loc1> = The three byte error location

<error loc2> indicates which byte of the

<error loc3> download caused the error. When

determining the error location the

received STX is considered loca-

tion one.

For example, if a 14-character download mes-

sage was transmitted and the LRC was incor-

rect, the response would be:

The lengths are translated to ASCII as follows:

011 decimal = 0B hex = 30h, 30h, 42h

014 decimal = 0E hex = 30h, 30h, 45h

The ASCII representation of this transmission

is:

02h, 30h, 30h, 42h, 15h, 46h, 30h, 30h, 45h,

03h, LRC.

The error location is more useful when multi-

ple parameters are downloaded; it then identi-

fies which param group, param ID, or

parameter value is invalid. When multiple pa-

rameters are downloaded any valid host com-

mands prior to the one that contained an error

is executed.

Param Group

This allows the user to specify which group is

being downloaded, or which group the single

parameter is in if a single parameter download

is being performed. Valid options are:

A valid param group is required for all com-

mands. An invalid parameter group causes an

error condition and a NAK String is transmit-

ted.

Each group contains related parameters. All

the groups are defined in the Parameter Defi-

nition Tables. These tables list the parameter

group, parameter ID, valid options, and the

standard default.
