QUICK START GUIDE

Use the guidelines below to prop-

erly mount the SmartSensor Rail:

˽Mount the SmartSensor Rail

on entrance gate masts or on

stand alone poles at the edge of

the Minimum Track Clearance

Distance zone (MTCD).

˽Mount the sensors so that

each sensors’ 90-degree, 140

feet (42.7 m) detection pattern

spans the crossing island.

˽e SmartSensor Rail rec-

ognizes lanes of trac and

detects the presence of moving

or stopped vehicles in up to

ten lanes.

˽For larger or irregularly-

shaped crossings, multiple

sensors (up to eight) may be used without interference.

˽Position the sensor so that it will be able to detect the entire area of interest. Acoid occlusion by install-

ing the sensor away from trees, signs and other roadside structures.

˽A minimum of 6 feet (1.8 m) to the rst lane of interest is required.

˽e sensor should not be mounted with signs and other at surfaces directly behind it. is will help

reduce multiple reection paths from a single vehicle.

2Mount the sensor

1Identify the components in your system package

e SmartSensor Rail is used to detect stopped and moving vehicles

in railroad crossing islands. e image to the right shows the contents

of a SmartSensor Rail package. e contents of your package may

vary.

3Determine the height and mount the sensor

4Align sensor to roadway

Use the following guidelines to determine the best mounting height:

˽e sensor should be placed at a height of approximately 20 ., give or take 5 . (6.1 ± 1.5 m).

˽e maximum recommended mounting height is 35 . (10.7 m). e minimum recommended mount-

ing height is 15 . (4.6 m).

˽Take into consideration the sensor’s footprint, which reaches 140 . (42.7 m) from the sensor. Place the

sensor so that the footprint covers all the areas of interest.

˽e mounting position should have a clear view of the detection area. Poles or other objects should not

block the view of the detection area.

˽Placing the sensor higher will result in less occlusion. Placing it lower could result in more occlusion.

However, if the nearest detection area is less than about 20 . (6.1 m) away, the sensor may perform bet-

ter with a lower mounting position.

To attach the mount bracket to the pole:

1 Insert the stainless steel straps through the slots in the mount bracket.

2 Position the mount on the pole so the mount head points

toward the lanes of interest at a 45° angle.

3 Tighten the strap screws.

To securely fasten the sensor to the mount bracket:

1 Align the bolts on the sensor’s backplate with the holes in the

mount bracket. e eight-pin connector receptacle on the

bottom of the sensor should be pointing towards the ground.

2 Place the lock washers onto the bolts aer the bolts are in the

mount bracket holes.

3 read on the nuts and tighten.

e sensor’s eld of view fans out 45° to both sides. You will usually want to

position the radar beam so that its 90° footprint covers all lanes at the railroad

intersection.

1 Adjust the side-to-side angle so the front edge of the eld of view pro-

vides a view downstream of the rail island.

2 Tilt the sensor down to aim it at the center of the lanes of interest.

3 If necessary, rotate the sensor so that the bottom edge of the sensor is

parallel with the roadway. is is necessary where the rail island ap-

proach has a signicant grade.

6Ground the sensor

5Attach the SmartSensor 6-conductor cable

1 Tear the tab o the silicon dielectric compound and squeeze about 25% of it into the connector at the

base of the sensor. Wipe o any excess compound.

2 Insert the cable into the connector and twist clockwise until you hear it click into place.

3 To avoid undue movement from wind, strap the cable to the pole or run it through a conduit, but leave

a small amount of slack at the top of the cable to reduce strain.

e SmartSensor Rail provides its own surge protection, so there is

no need for a pole-mount box on the sensor side of the cable. Instead,

the cable should run straight to the main trac cabinet; landing the

cable in the cabinet will be covered later in this document.

It is necessary, however, to ground the sensor:

1 Connect a grounding wire to the grounding lug on the bottom of

the sensor.

2 Connect the other end of the grounding wire to the earth ground for the pole that the sensor is mount-

ed on. Do not attempt to run the grounding wire back to the main trac cabinet.

7Attach the sensor cable junction box

e Sensor Cable Junction Box provides connection between the sensor’s pigtail cable and the homerun

cable to the cabinet. Using the junction box means that you will not need to pull the cable all the way from

the sensor to the cabinet.

Note. e sensor cable junction box is optional and may not be needed with every sensor installation.

Follow the steps below to install the junction box to the SmartSensor Rail detection system:

1 Connect the cable coming from the sensor to one side of

the junction box by pushing the cable through one of the

cable grips.

2 Once the cable is through the cable grip, connect the

cable wires to the terminal blocks inside the junction

box.

3 Push the cable from the cabinet through the other cable

grip.

4 Connect the same colored wires to the terminal block

directly accross from the sensor cable wires.

Note. Make sure that the same colored wires are directly across from each other.

8Install SmartSensor Manager Rail (SSMR) software

9Make a connection

If you are using a Wavetronix Install Kit, the handheld computer comes with SmartSensor Manager Rail

already installed. If you are not using the install kit handheld computer, or if you would like to install on a

laptop or PC, contact Wavetronix Technical Services for assisstance.

1 Make a connection between your computer and the sensor. is can be

done with a Click communication module, such as the Click 301 serial

to Ethernet converter or a Click 421 Bluetooth® module (the Click 421

is included in the Wavetronix Install Kit). e Click module must be

mounted on the same T-bus as the Click 222 system surge protector.

2 Open SSMM and select Communication on the main menu.

3 Select the type of connection you want to make (serial or Internet;

the virtual connection is for training and demonstration purposes) by

clicking on the tab at the top of the page.

4 If desired, change the timeout.

5 For an Internet connection, enter the IP address and port of the sensor.

For a serial connection, enter the port (if needed).

6 Select the type of search to perform,

Quick or Full. e rst time you

search for a sensor, you must perform

a full search. Once you’ve connected

to the sensor once, you can use a quick

search from then on.

7 Once the soware is done detecting,

select your sensor from the list, then

click Connect.

Note. e squares in the lower le of the

main menu let you change SSMR’s display

size.
