Using LUN Zoning

In this Guide

To increase flexibility and provide more effective partitioning of

your storage infrastructure, the Adaptec DuraStor 7200S controller

supports LUN zoning. Using LUN zoning, you can allow a host to

access a specific set of LUNs on an array while restricting access to

other LUNs in that array. You use the Adaptec Disk Array

Administrator to define which hosts have access to each particular

LUN. This guide provides step-by-step instructions.

Before You Begin

Before you set up LUN zoning, you should know the World Wide

Name (WWN) for each host that you want to set up. Your SAN

administrator should know the WWNs for your network.

An Overview of How It Works

To use your controller’s LUN zoning feature, you’ll be performing

these three main tasks:

■View the WWNs. You can display a list of the last 16 WWNs that

the controller is aware of on the SAN (page 4).

■Give each WWN an easy-to-recognize name (alias) to make

LUN zoning faster and easier to work with (page 5 ).

■Set up LUN zoning by either excluding or including hosts on a

list for each partition LUN (page 6). The list can include or

exclude up to 16 specific hosts. You can also include all hosts for

each particular LUN (page 9).

The LUN zoning feature also allows you to delete partitions you no

longer want to use (page 10).

A Working Example

The following figure shows you an example of how you can use

LUN zoning. In this example:

■Array A has two partitions. Partition 1 has an include list that

contains only Accounting, so only the Accounting host can

access partition 1.

■Array B, partition 3 has an exclude list that contains only the

Web host, so all hosts except the Web host can access the

partition.

■Array C uses the default setting, Include All Hosts, so all hosts

can access the array.

Viewing Known WWNs

You can view a list of 16 host WWNs that the controller is aware of

on your SAN. The controller is aware of any host that was booted

since the controller was last restarted. Typically, hosts scan for

devices during their boot process. When this happens, the

controllers saves the WWN information for the host and retains the

information even after you reboot the controller. The list includes

the last 16 hosts that booted or that you named.

You can determine which WWN is for which host by booting one

host at a time and then viewing the WWN list. The most recently

booted host is listed first. To make LUN zoning easier to manage,

you can give the hosts names you recognize (see page 5).

To view known WWNs:

1From the System Menu, select Configuration Menu, then press

Enter.

The Configuration Menu appears.

2Select General LUN Zoning, then press Enter.

The General LUN Zoning menu appears.

3Select Display Host List, then press Enter.

The Display Host List appears, showing the last 16 WWNs

known to the controller. The WWNs are listed according to

when they were booted. The most recently booted host is listed

first.

Note: A host’s WWN can be placed at the top of the known

hosts list whenever the host performs a device discovery or

bus scanning type of operation.

4Press Esc to return to the previous menu.

Creating Names for WWNs

To make LUN zoning easier to manage, you can assign names, or

aliases, to the hosts. For example, you can use a computer name

that has already been assigned. You can determine which WWN is

for which host by booting one host at a time and then viewing the

WWN list. The most recently booted host is listed first.

You can name up to 63 hosts, but you can only view the last 16

hosts that booted or that you named. The list is updated as you

name or reboot hosts. Names are stored on the controller, so if you

change controllers, you’ll need to rename the hosts.

To create or change names for WWNs:

1From the System Menu, select Configuration Menu, then press

Enter.

The Configuration Menu appears.

2Select General LUN Zoning, then press Enter.

The General LUN Zoning menu appears.

3Select Add or Name Host, then press Enter.

The Add or Name Host screen displays the last 16 known

WWNs and host names that you have set up. For more

information, see Viewing Known WWNs on page 4.

If the controller is not aware of any WWNs, the list is empty.

Select Enter New Host to enter a WWN.

Note: The controller doesn’t typically assign a default name to

a WWN. However, in some cases, the name defaults to the

name of the manufacturer of the host bus adapter (HBA),

enclosed in angle brackets. For example, an Adaptec HBA has

a default name of <Adaptec>.

4Select the WWN you want to name, then press Enter.

The Enter Host Name screen appears.

5Enter the name (alias) you want, then press Enter. You can use

up to 16 characters. You can include any characters in the name,

including spaces.

Configuring LUN Zoning

Once you set up host names (aliases), you can easily set up your

LUN zoning. This is where you determine which hosts can access

each partition LUN.

You set up LUN zoning by either excluding or including hosts on a

list for each partition LUN. The list can include or exclude up to 16

specific hosts or all hosts for each partition LUN.

The zoning information is stored as part of the array’s metadata

using the WWN for each host. If you install a new controller, the

array partition’s LUN zoning remains. The LUN zoning also

remains if you change the partition’s LUN.

Note: Changes to LUN zoning take effect immediately.

Therefore, if a partition is not in use, you should limit access

to it.

To set up LUN zoning:

1Display the Partition Menu.

The Partition Menu screen appears.

From the Array Menu From the All Partitions Menu

1 From the System Menu, select

Array Menu and press Enter.

The Select Array menu

appears.

2 Select the array you want and

press Enter.

That array’s Array menu

appears.

3 Select Partition Menu and

press Enter.

The Select Partition menu

appears.

4 Select the partition you want

and press Enter.

1 From the System Menu, select

All Partitions Menu and press

Enter.

The Select Partition or Free

Area menu appears with a list

of existing partitions and free

space.

2 Select the partition you want

and press Enter.

Configuring LUN Zoning

2Select LUN Zoning, then press Enter.

The LUN Exclude list or LUN Include list displays. The default

setting for each partition LUN is Include All Hosts. This results in

all hosts being able to access all partitions. You can change the

list type using the Change Zone Type option. See the next step.

Whether you use an include or exclude list depends on your

needs. You may want to determine which list would be shorter

and therefore easier to create.

3Select the option you want, then press Enter. The options

available are:

–Display Host List—Displays a list of the hosts currently on the

include or exclude list for the selected partition. This option

displays hosts only if you have already used Add Host to List

and added one or more WWNs to an include or exclude list.

–Add Host to List—Displays the Enter Host WWN screen

where you enter the WWN or name (alias) or select the host

you want to add to the current list for the selected partition.

The list of WWNs and names that displays contains only the

last 16 hosts that booted or that you named. If you know

other WWNs or names, you can enter the WWN or name.

Enter the WWN or name (alias) or select the host from the list

and press Enter.

–Remove Host from List—Displays the Remove Host from List

screen, which contains a list of the hosts currently on the

include or exclude list for the selected partition. Select the

WWN of the host you want to remove, then press Enter.

–Change Zone Type—Displays the Change Zone Type screen

where you can change the type of zoning to one of four

options described below. Changing the zone type does not

add or remove any hosts in previously created lists.

■Include All Hosts—Permits all hosts on the network to

access the selected array. This is the default zone type. This

results in all hosts being able to access all partitions. If you

have already created an include or exclude list, you can use

this option to override the list. Your existing list is retained

and you can display, add, or remove hosts from the list.

DuraStor 7200S LUN Zoning.book Page 7 Tuesday, July 23, 2002 4:14 PM

DuraStor 7200S LUN Zoning User’s Guide

■Include Listed Hosts—Lets you enter or select the WWNs

of the specific hosts you want to access the selected

partition. The list of WWNs and names that displays

contains only the last 16 hosts that booted or that you

named. If you know other WWNs or names, you can enter

the WWN or name.

■Exclude All Hosts—Permits no hosts on the network to

access the selected partition. If you have already created an

include or exclude list, you can use this option to override

the list. Your existing list is retained and you can display,

add, or remove hosts from the list.

■Exclude Listed Hosts—Lets you enter or select the WWNs

or names (aliases) of the specific hosts you do not want to

be able to access the selected partition. The list of WWNs

and names that displays contains only the last 16 hosts that

booted or that you named. If you know other WWNs or

names, you can enter the WWN or name.

If you have changed the LUN zoning, the system asks you to

confirm that you want to make the change.

4Select Yes, then press Enter to make the changes.

The system confirms that the changes are made.

5Press Esc to return to the LUN zoning screen.
