nTOF –Target 2 Removal

Handling Tasks

(Sequence of Operations)

Abstract –This document outlines the tasks needed to remove n_TOF Target 2 in order

to allow its replacement with Target 3. The tasks include removal of the equipment and

items in the vertical beam pipe to gain access to the n_TOF target 2 from the technical

gallery. It is assumed the detectors and the associated equipment have been removed

before this work starts. This document identifies tasks where remote handling will be

required.

O.Aberle, K.Kershaw and nTOF EAR2 beam line installation

procedure document.

Based on discussions between O.Aberle and K.Kershaw an

abstract and scope were added to give a better overview.

More photos and dimensions were added to give clarification

for certain operations. The dump removal process was also

added between 80-90.

Estimations for time and hands needed have been added

along with some minor superficial changes.

Following a meeting with RP, some areas of work have been

added along with clarification that most items above the

technical gallery will want to be reused.

Document ready for Engineering Check

Following meetings with all the groups involved, and testing of

certain tasks, the process has been updated.

Following comments after the last release, the document has

been updated.

Updates to draining procedure, better pictures.

1. Introduction

This document explains in a visual format the handling tasks needed to remove the

n_TOF beam pipe equipment to gain access to the target area and the tasks needed to

remove and dismantle Target 2 itself. In this document, “handling” covers any tasks

where human or remote intervention is needed in the area.

The initial removal process laid out in this document is based upon the n_TOF EAR2

beam line installation procedure document (EDMS: 1302710).

The first version of the document illustrated the tasks without specifying how they will

be carried out; however, the format of the document was designed to allow more

information to be easily added as the necessary procedures were and will continue to

be developed.

The majority of these tasks will be carried out manually or ‘hands-on’. Remote handling

will be used for all the tasks related to the handling of the target to optimize the dose

to personnel.

Important CATIA models:

-ST0332721_01 –n_TOF EAR2 Area

-ST0083420_01 –Target 2

Important drawings:

-CERN Drawing Number: TOFEAR2_0154

A schedule for this tasks has been drafted. At the time of writing, it is under discussion

(EDMS 2066754).

2. Scope

This document covers the handling tasks needed for the removal of the equipment

within the vertical beam pipe and then the removal and dismantling of the old

Target 2, so that the new target 3 can be installed. In the figure below, it can be

seen that the area can be split into two sections, above the technical gallery and

below. It is assumed that the detectors have been removed from the experimental

areas.

3. Tasks

The tasks are described on task sheets with 1 task stage per sheet. Initial task

numbering is in multiples of 10 to allow additional tasks to be added or increased

levels of granularity as the preparation work continues.
