Installing the External Drive Bay

This document describes how to install the external drive bay assembly in your Dell

PowerEdge system. The drive bay assembly allows up to two 1-inch hard-disk drives

to be installed in the external drive bay using hard-disk drive carriers. SCSI connectors

are built into the drive bay assembly to enable easy installation and removal of the

drive carriers. The drive bay assembly is connected to one of the SCSI controllers on

the system board.

This document applies to kits with external drive bays holding up to two 1-inch hard-

disk drives in 5U and 7U height PowerEdge systems. It does not apply to external

drive bay kits holding a single 1-inch hard-disk drive.

NOTICE: Hot-pluggable drive installation and removal is not supported for

hard-disk drives installed in the external drive bay. Removing a drive while the

system is turned on will result in a loss of data.

Before You Begin

Only trained service technicians are authorized to install hard-disk drives in the sys-

tem’s external drive bay. Refer to the safety instructions at the beginning of your

Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for important information about accessing the

interior of your system.

WARNING: The power supplies in this computer system produce high volt-

ages and energy hazards, which can cause bodily harm. Only trained

service technicians are authorized to remove the computer cover and

access any of the components inside the computer, including the compo-

nents mentioned in this document for installing hard-disk drives in the

external drive bay.

WARNING: This system may have more than one power supply cable. To

reduce the risk of electrical shock, a trained service technician must discon-

nect all power supply cables before servicing the system. For more

information, refer to “Safety First—For You and Your Computer” in your

Installation and Troubleshooting Guide.

1-2 Dell PowerEdge Systems —Installing the External Drive Bay

Installing a SCSI Hard-Disk Drive in the External

Drive Bay

To install a SCSI hard-disk drive in the external drive bay, use the following procedure:

1. Locate the four mounting holes on each side of the external drive bay. Align a rail

bracket with the set of holes that, when the rail is installed, places the rail closer

to the front of the external drive bay.

2. Secure a rail bracket to the left and right sides of the external drive bay using the

screws provided (see Figure 1-1).

3. Attach the hard-disk drive to the drive carrier.

a. With the drive carrier laying flat, place the hard-disk drive right-side up on the

carrier with the front of the drive directly behind the carrier handle and the

drive connector on the end of the carrier.

b. Secure the hard-disk drive to the drive carrier with four screws inserted

through the sides of the carrier.

4. Align the edge of the drive carrier with the notches in the drive bay assembly and

slide the carrier into the assembly as shown in Figure 1-1.

Carrier

5. Close the drive carrier handle to lock the drive in place.

6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 to install a second drive in the assembly.

7. Attach the locking bar to the front of the drive bay assembly.

a. Insert the bottom end of the locking bar (the end without the screw hole)

into the slot at the bottom-front of the assembly.

b. Pivot the locking bar up so that the recessed hole at the top of the bar aligns

with the screw hole at the top of the assembly, and secure the locking bar

with the flush-mount screw.

Installing the External Drive Bay

To install the external drive bay, use the following procedure:

1. Shut down the system, turn off the computer and any attached peripherals, and

disconnect the computer and peripherals from their electrical outlets.

2. Remove the computer cover and front bezel.

See the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for instructions on removing the

computer cover and front bezel.

3. Slide the drive bay assembly into the external drive bay until it snaps into place.

NOTE: Step 4 describes one configuration for SCSI drives installed in the external

drive bay. For other configurations, see the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide.

4. Attach the two connectors on the terminator end of the SCSI cable to the two

SCSI connectors on the back of the drive bay assembly, and attach the connector

on the other end of the cable to either the PRIMARY SCSI-A or PRIMARY SCSI-B

connector on the system board (see Figure 1-2).

5. Attach the power cable(s) to the power connector(s) on the back of the drive bay

assembly.

6. Install the system management ribbon cable (provided with the kit):

a. Remove the ribbon cable from the SCSI backplane board interface connector

(the BACKPLANE connector) on the system board. Do not disconnect the

other end of this cable from its connector on the SCSI backplane board.

b. Locate the system management ribbon cable (provided with the kit). Con-

nect the end of this cable, marked PLANAR, to the BACKPLANE connector

on the system board.

c. Attach the free end of the cable you disconnected in step a. to the middle

connector of the system management ribbon cable you just installed in step

b. Secure the connectors with latches on the new system management

cable connector.

d. Attache the system management cable connector marked FDHDBP to the

connector labeled PLANAR 1X2 on the back of the drive bay assembly.

7. Remove any front-panel inserts on the front bezel that block the external

drive bay.

See “Installing Drives in the External Bays,”in the Installation and

Troubleshooting Guide for detailed information on removing the front-panel

inserts.

8. Replace the front bezel and computer cover.

9. Reconnect the computer and peripherals to their electrical outlets, and turn

them on.

10. Install any required SCSI device drivers.

See “Installing and Configuring SCSI Drivers,”in your system’sUser’s Guide for

information.

11. If the hard-disk drive is a new drive, run the SCSI Devices test group in the Dell

Diagnostics.

See “Running the Dell Diagnostics,”in the Installation and Troubleshooting

Guide for information.

Removing the External Drive Bay

To remove the external drive bay, use the following procedure:

1. Shut down the system, turn off the computer and any attached peripherals, and

disconnect the computer and peripherals from their electrical outlets.

2. Remove the computer cover and front bezel.

See the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for instructions on removing the

computer cover and front bezel.

3. Remove the SCSI, system management cable connector (marked FDHDBP), and

DC power cables from the back of the hard-disk drive.

4. Press inward on the two release tabs on the drive bay assembly, and pull the

assembly about one inch out of the external drive bay.

5. Remove the flush-mount screw that secures the locking bar on the front of the

assembly and remove the locking bar.

6. Open the drive carrier handle and slide the carrier out of the drive bay.

7. Insert the drive-bay filler panel or a replacement hard-disk drive and its carrier in

the empty drive slot.

8. Replace the locking bar and the screw you removed in step 5.

9. Slide the drive bay assembly back into the external drive bay.

NOTE: If you installed a drive bay filler panel, go to step 11.

1-6 Dell PowerEdge Systems —Installing the External Drive Bay

10. If you installed a hard-disk drive and its carrier, connect the SCSI cable and the

power cable to the back of the hard-disk drive.

11. Replace the front bezel and computer cover.

12. Reconnect the computer and peripherals to their electrical outlets, and turn

them on.
