Notes on building the model

It is essential to read right through these instructions before starting to build the

model. Please be aware of the hazards involved in the use of tools.

Remove all traces of grease from the joint surfaces of components which are to be

glued. A good method is to sand lightly before wiping with a non-greasy liquid deter-

gent solution. Before gluing any GRP parts, and GRP fuselages in particular, the joint

surfaces must be sanded thoroughly with fine-grit abrasive paper before de-greasing

with a solvent such as acetone. This is the only method of obtaining durable glued

joints involving GRP parts.

Tools required to build the AMIGO IV

Pencil (HB lead), felt-tip pen, setsquare, tape measure or metre rule, Lexan shears,

Order No. 26, sharp, narrow-bladed knife, e.g. balsa knife, Order No. 980, small

electric drill, set of twist drills.

For the receiver and transmitter batteries we recommend rechargeable packs, which

should be maintained carefully before and after each flying session. Please note that

batteries of this type do not reach full capacity until they have been charged and dis-

charged (cycled) several times.

We deliberately recommend rechargeable batteries for the receiver and transmitter,

as these types provide the widest margin of safety.

You will also need foam rubber for protecting the receiver from shock damage.

Assembling the AMIGO IV

Do not start building the model until you have studied the kit contents, and are

familiar with the components and the individual stages of construction. If you believe

you have grounds for complaint about any part, inform the model shop from whom

you purchased the kit in the first instance.

Fin and tailplane

Use your fingertips to locate the fin slot, the pushrod exits, and the openings for the

ON / OFF switch, the wing retaining dowels and the towhook. Melt the film over them

using the tip of a hot soldering iron.

Fit the fin in the exposed slot, pushing it down until it rests on the support plate

inside the fuselage. Mark the outline of the fuselage on both sides of the fin using a

felt-tip pen. Remove the fin and run a hot soldering iron along the edge of a steel

ruler positioned just below the marked line, then peel the covering film from the joint

areas.

Mark a centreline on the rudder hinges using a pencil, as shown in the photo, then

push the hinges into the slits in the fin to a depth of around 1 mm.

Push the hinges into the fin as far as the pencil-line, and glue them in place with

cyano-acrylate (“cyano”). It is best to use a syringe to apply the adhesive between

the hinge and the wood on both sides, as shown in the picture.

Allow the glue to set hard, then insert the hinges in the slits in the rudder to a depth

of about 1 mm once more.

Apply a drop of cyano on both sides of each hinge, and quickly push the rudder onto

the hinges, leaving a gap about 0.5 mm wide along the hinge-line.

The fin can now be glued in the slot in the fuselage using UHU hart or UHU wood

glue: apply glue to the support plate in the fuselage and to both sides of the fin, then

push the panel into the slot until it rests squarely on the support plate. Check that the

fin is exactly vertical, and tape it in position as shown while the glue is drying.

Drill 2 mm Ø holes for the rudder horn at the marked points on the rudder, and fix

the horn in place using two pan-head screws and the plastic spreader plate.

Use your fingertips to locate the holes for the tailplane retaining screws on both

sides of the tailplane, and melt the film over them with a hot soldering iron.

Temporarily fix the tailplane to the fuselage using the M3 x 16 socket-head screws

provided. Slip the elevator pushrod into the guide tube, working from the tail end of

the fuselage. Screw the locknut and clevis on the threaded end, and connect the

clevis to the elevator horn as shown.

Position the horn on the elevator in such a way that the linkage hole for the clevis

lines up with the elevator hinge pivot axis; mark the screw-holes on the elevator.

Fix the horn to the elevator using two pan-head screws and the spreader plate.

Use side-cutters to snip off the excess length of the horn retaining screws, and file

the ends back flush with the spreader plate.

Installing the towhook

The towhook is attached to the fuselage using two socket-head machine screws and

the plastic spreader plate provided. Don’t overtighten the screws: tighten them just to

the point where the hook is fixed securely to the fuselage, and cannot shift.

Installing the servos and the ON / OFF switch

Locate the rubber grommets and metal spacer sleeves supplied in the servo

accessory packs, and press them into the servo mounting lugs. Note that the flange

of the spacers must be at the bottom.

Fit the servos in the servo plate and drill 1.5 mm Ø pilot-holes through the

grommets. Fix the servos in place using the retaining screws supplied with them.

Cut down the servo output levers to the shape shown in the photo below.

Set the servos to centre from the transmitter - check that the trims are exactly at

centre - before fitting the output arms on the output shafts. Use a felt-tip pen to mark

the position of the linkage holes on the pushrods.

Use a pair of flat-nose pliers to bend the pushrods up at right-angles at the marked

points. Snip off excess pushrod material at a point around 8 mm above the bend.

Connect the pushrods to the outermost holes in the servo output arms from the

underside, and push the plastic keepers into place to prevent them working loose.

The wings are retained on the fuselage by rubber bands stretched between

transverse aluminium tubes. Locate the dowel holes in the fuselage sides with your

fingertips, melt away the covering film using a hot soldering iron, and push the

aluminium tubes through; they should project by equal amounts on both sides.
