Introduction

This document contains important information about installing and

operating PS12/24ADA series signaling strobes and piezo electronic

sounders. These strobes and sounder/strobes are manufactured by System

Sensor for use with Johnson Controls systems. The strobes are UL 1971

Listed for signaling devices for the hearing impaired. Those models that

produce 75 candela (cd) meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

light output requirements of 75 cd on axis. Those strobes that produce less

than 75 candela may be considered as meeting ADA equivalency

requirements when applied per the National Fire Protection Association

National Fire Code Standard (NFPA-72) and with the approval of the local

authority having jurisdiction.

These instructions apply to the entire PS12/24ADA series signaling

strobes and sounders. Follow only those instructions that apply to the

model you are installing. If you install this strobe for someone else to use,

you must leave a copy of this document with the user.

Before you install any PS12/24ADA series signaling strobes and sounders,

read and be familiar with:

●the control panel system installation manual

●the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction

●National Fire Protection Association

(NFPA)-72-National Fire Alarm Code

●System Sensor Strobe Compliance Reference Guide, which provides

detailed information on strobe spacing, placement, zoning, and ADA

requirements

●or, for non-United States installations, applicable codes and standards

specific to the country and locality of installation

Failure to follow these directions may result in failure of the device to

report an alarm or trouble condition. Johnson Controls is not responsible

for devices that have been improperly installed, tested, or maintained

by others.

As is the case with all installations under NFPA, Underwriters

Laboratories, Inc. (UL), Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), or

Canadian Electrical Code classification, final written approval of

permissible operation and configuration rests with the authority having

jurisdiction.

CAUTION: Equipment hazard. Do not use in potentially

explosive atmospheres. Do not leave unused

wires exposed.

The piezo electronic sounder and signaling strobe are intended to be

connected to the alarm indicating circuit of a UL Listed fire alarm control

panel. Both sounder and strobe are compatible with DC line supervision.

The electronic sounder can be connected to either 12 or 24 VDC panels.

The strobes produce one flash per second (nominal) with continuous

nominal voltage applied.

Note: The strobe cannot operate from coded power supplies, which

produce interrupted power. The strobe must have an uninterrupted

source of power in order to operate correctly.

The strobes are available in red and white. The W suffix indicates white.

* All strobes are UL 1971 Listed. Models with outputs of 75 candela (cd) are suitable for

use in locations requiring compliance with ADA requirements. The 15/75 cd strobe has

been measured to be 75 cd at 0° viewing angle. The 15 cd strobes may be considered

ADA equivalent when applied per NFPA-72 and have the approval of the authority

having jurisdiction.

Note: dBA is measured in an anechoic room at 10 feet. Greater than 90 dBA measured in

anechoic room at 10 feet, 24 volts; 79 dBA minimum measured in UL reverberant

room at 12V and 82 dBA at 24V.

UL 1971 requires a polar light distribution pattern to enhance the

likelihood of alerting hearing impaired individuals throughout an area.

Figure 1 illustrates the way the standard measures light intensity, both

horizontally and vertically.

All models can be powered using Full-Wave Rectified (FWR), unfiltered

(unregulated) power supplies. However, if the power supply is

unregulated, the notification appliance must be compatibility listed for use

with the fire alarm system. If the power supplied is from a regulated

power supply, no compatibility listing is required. In addition, follow the

guidelines listed below:

●Under no circumstances can PS24ADA series devices input voltage

exceed 33 VDC or be less than 16 VDC peak when using a regulated

power supply. When using an unregulated power supply, the range is

16-33 VRMS.

●Under no circumstances can a PS12ADA or MASS12ADA series

device input voltage exceed 18.7 VDC or be less than 8.5 VDC for a

regulated power supply. When using an unregulated power supply,

the range is 8.5-18.7 VRMS.

Note: Inrush current duration is less than 20 microseconds (0.00002 seconds).

Note: Inrush current refers to current that exceeds the peak current when

the strobe is first turned on. Once the strobe is turned on, it flashes

one flash per second. Peak current indicates the current rising

above the average operating current right after each strobe flash.

Installation Procedures

This section contains installation information for PS12/24ADA series

strobes and sounder/strobes. Mounting instructions and wiring

information are provided.

Installation procedures must conform to all applicable codes and the

requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.

For strobe placement, read and be familiar with:

●NFPA 72-National Fire Alarm Code

Both slotted-head and Phillips-head screws are supplied with the

speaker/strobe.

●Use the slotted-head screws to mount the semi-flush plate to the

electrical box.

●Use the Phillips-head screws to attach the PS12/24ADA to a

semi-flush plate or to the electrical backbox.

Note: The rated output of the sounder is specified at ten feet on axis.

It cannot be assumed that the output will meet the NFPA standard

of 15 dB over ambient noise at all locations within a room.

Additional sounders may be needed to ensure that the sound output

level complies with NFPA requirements.

Strobe and sounder/strobe combination are designed for wall mounting

only. The PS12/24ADA is intended for mounting to a standard 2-1/2 inch

deep single gang box which allows for sufficient clearance for conduit

entrance.

All strobes must be mounted where the top of the lens is 24 inches below

ceilings or as required by the authority having jurisdiction.

For mounting the sounder/strobe, note the following figures:

●Surface Mount (Figure 2)

●Semi-flush Mount (Figures 3 and 4)

●Semi-flush Mount with Plaster Ring or Double Gang Box (Figure 5)

1. Complete the field wiring as described in the Wiring Installation

Guidelines section of this technical bulletin (Figure 7).

2. Screw the PS12/24ADA to the backbox with Type A screws.
