Projection of sound pictures will be easy right from the start if your

Sound Kodascope is set up correctly and the instructions followed closely.

This manual is designed to help you do this quickly.

OPERATION

MAINTENANCE

• Operational maintenance .... the things you will have to do to keep your

equipment producing brilliant pictures, accompanied by true reproduction of

sound. Many of these suggestions will become a part of routine operation. They

are just as important as correct focus or good tone' if you are to enjoy your

Sound Kodascope.

PROJECTION

SETUP

The Night

• If you are to receive the fullest satisfaction from your

Sound Kodascope, you should project pictures of an ade-

quate size and brilliance. Generally speaking, there are

four things which govern picture size-size of screen,

focal

length

of lens,

brightness

of screen, and

distance from pro-

jecfor to

screen. Whatever the limiting factor may be-

screen size, lens focal length, screen brightness, or pro-

jector-to-screen distance-the graph below will give you

.quickly the information you need to make the correct

projection setup and enjoy maximum-size pictures.

OPERATION

YOUR SOUND KODASCOPE

equipment is contained in

two cases-the speoker unit and the Kodascope case.

Locate the speaker unit in a convenient position as close

as possible to the screen. Lift the two latches and swing

the sides open. Remove the

TAKE-UP REEL, PROJECTION LAMP,

and

POWER CORD.

Then turn the speaker opening toward

the audience. The speaker case may be closed or left open.

Place the Kodascope case on a firm table with the front

end flush with the edge. lift the four latches and lower

the two sides of the case.

Several operating positions are possible. The Kodoscope

can be operated from the case as shown below, or

-if additional neightis rrecessaryj'it con be placed upon the

closed case as shown on the opposite page. Slight de-

pressions in the case side indicate the locotion for the

Kodascope feet when it is used in the latter position.

Remove the two

REEL ARMS.

The larger cover-side can

be removed, if desired, by pushing it toward the rear of

the table until it is released from the hinges. The small

side of the case can be ,left extended on the table or it

can be dropped as shown above.

Loosen the two

REEL-ARM SCREWS

and attach the upper

and lower reel arms. Use a coin to tighten the reel-arm

screws. Place the spring belts over the reel-arm pulleys.

Locate the lower spring belt according to reel size.

NOTE: When using a 1200-, 1600-, or 20oo-foot take-up reel (or any

reel with a core diameter of more than 4

inches), place the lower

spring belt over the larger reel-arm pulley. For smaller reels, use

the small pulley.

Press the

SPRING CATCH;

raise and remove the

LA,MP-

HOUSING.

Insert the projection lamp into the

SOCKET

with the larger

flange toward the front of the projector. Press down on

the lamp and turn it to the right as far as it will go.

Lower the lamphousing over the lamp with the grooves

of the housing engaging the

RAILS.

Be sure the spring catch

clicks into place. Secure the lamphouse top in place.

Attach the power cord to the receptacle on the left

side of the projector and to a 110- to 125-volt, 50- or

60-cycle c-c electrical outlet.

Be sure that the belt is not wlsteo and that both strands

are under the

GUIDE ROLLER.

Remove the two knurled

Withdraw sufficient speaker cord from the speoker-

case Cordomatic reel to reach the projector. Attach the

speaker-cord plug to the receptacle in the rear of the

projector.

To recail the speaker cord, pullout on the cord until a

clicking sound is heard; then permit the reel to draw the

cord into the case. Do not allow the plug to slap against

the case; hold the plug while °the cord is being recoiled.

The

ON-OFF SWITCH

is the master control switch for

all circuits. With the switch at ON, the threadlight is

lighted and the projector is ready for operation.

Turn the

CONTROL SWITCH

to PROJECTION LAMP. Rotate

the lens until the margins of the lighted area on the screen

are sharp. For lateral adjustment of the lamp' to improve

the uniformity of the brightness, turn the

LAMP CENTERING

SCREW

a trifle either way with a coin or screwdriver.

For vertical adjustment, turn the

ElEVATING WHEEl.

Make

this adjustment provisionally; it may have to be altered

slightly after the framing lever has been set in the proper

position for the film.

Turn the control switch to OFF and turn the EXCITER

LAMP CONTROL knob in a clockwise direction as far as

it will go beyond ON. As soon as the small red window,

next to the fidelity lever, is illuminated by the exciter

lamp, the sound system is ready for operation.

AFTER THREADING,

Turn the

THREADING KNOB

counterclockwise a few times

to be sure that the film is properly threaded, that there

is no slack film between the supply reel and the feed

sprocket, that the claws of the pull-down engage with

the film perforations, and that the loop sizes are

maintained.

Turn the MOTOR CONTROL knob to SOUND SPEED.

Be sure the EXCITER LAMP CONTROL knob is turned

beyond ON as far as it will go.

Turn the

CONTROL SWITCH

to MOJOR and check to see

that the film is running properly. Then turn the control

switch to PROJECTION LAMP. The thread light is

turned off automatically when the control switch is

turned to PROJECTION LAMP.

Focus the Kodascope by turning the lens back and

forth until the picture is sharp.

If the picture shows a blank strip or the edge of the

next frame at the top or bottom of the projected

picture, move the

FRAMING LEVER

up or down.

THREADING

Place the reel of film on the supply spindle with the

film coming from the bottom of the reel, perforations

toward you. Lock the reel on the spindle with the

latch. Draw off approximately three feet of film.

Insert the film between the feed sprocket and sprocket

clamp, engage the film perforations with the sprocket

teeth, and close the clamp.

Open the gate by pushing forward on the lever

until the gate latches.

Turn the threading knob until the pull-down claws

are withdrawn from the gate.

Form the upper loop. Then slid.e the film behind the

gate and center it between the .edge guides on the

rear plate. Close the gate.

Form a lower loop as illustrated, hold back the

pressure-roller lever and insert the film over the

sound-loop roller. Release the pressure-roller lever.

Press dow on

tension-roller lever and place the

film beneath the sound drum.

Thread the film between the sound sprocket and the.

sprocket clamp. Engage the film perforations with

the sprocket teeth and close the clamp. There must be

no slack between the sound-loop roller and the sound

sprocket.

Thread the film over the stripper stud and beneath

the snubber.

Place the take-up reel on the take-up spindle and

lock the reel on the spindle with the latch. Then insert

the end of the film into a slot in

the core of the take-up reel. Take

up the slack between the sound

sprocket and the take-up' reel.

To place the take-up belt under

proper tension, hold the take-up

reel with the left hand and turn

the knob on the rear of the

spindle in a clockwise direction.

SOUND

Focusing the beam from the exciter lamp on the sound

track of the film is extremely important and is accomplished

by moving the FIDELITY lever up or down. The position of

the sound track on the film base will vary depending upon

whether you are using (a) l o-rnrn sound-on-film originals,

l o-rnm prints from 35·mm originals, or (b) l o-rnrn duplicates

of l o-mrn originals, block-end-white or Kodachrome.

The sketches illustrate the position of the beam upon the

two tY,f>esof_film: ~ne threaded with emulsion side of film

toward the projector lens (a), and the other with emulsion

side away from the projection lens (b).

Regardless of which type film you are using, focusing is

extremely simple. Turn the TONE control knob clock-

wise as far as it will go; then move the FIDELITY lever

up or down to the position giving the most complete range

of sound. When the bearp is sharply focused on the sound

track, you will obtain brilliant reproduction of music, and

speech will be crisp and distinct. After the fidelity lever

has been set, adjust the TONE and VOLUME controls in

the conventional manner.

REWINDING

At the completion of projection, turn the control switch

to OFF and pull out on the

REWIND LEVER.

Attach the film to the upper reel by inserting the end of

the film into the reel slot. Give the reel a few turns toward

the Kodascope to make sure that the end of the film is

secure. See that the film is not twisted between the two

reels.

Turn the control switch to MOTOR and permit the film to

rewind. Exert a slight retarding pressure on the lower

reel to keep the film from unwinding too rapidly.

After the film is rewound, turn the control switch to OFF

and return the rewind lever to its original position.

TO PROJECT SILENT PICTURES

Thread the film through the feed sprocket, the gate,.

and through the sound sprocket as shown in the illustration

on the next page: Be sure to allow an upper and a lower

loop.

Turn the EXCITER LAMP CONTROL knob to OFF unless

a microphone or. a phonograph pickup is to be used (see

instructions below). Turn the MOTOR CONTROL knob

toward the silent speed arrow. Regulate the speed of

silent pictures with the MOTOR CONTROL knob.

If silent pictures are projected without microphone or

pickup, it 'is not necessary to have the speaker connected.

MICROPHONE OR

PHONOGRAPH PICKUP

To use phonograph music or supply microphone com-

ments with silent pictures, a jack for a high-impedance

microphone or phonograph pickup is provided on the

left side of the Sound Kodascope. It may be necessary

with certain high-level phonograph pickups to use an

auxiliary volume control on the pickup to prevent dis-

tortion in the first stage of the amplifier. Sound from the

film is not cut off when a plug is inserted in the jack, thus

permitting "mixing" of sound from microphone or phono-

graph with sound from film.

Microphone or Phonograph and Silent Pictures:

Turn the

exciter lamp control knob until it clicks at the ON position.

Control volume with the VOLUME control knob. Do not

turn the VOLUME control up so for that the microphone

howls or "feeds back."

Microphone or Phonograph and Sound Pictures:

Regulate

sound from film with the exciter lamp control knob and

microphone or phonograph volume with the VOLUME

control knob.

Oper Jting Suggestions

No sound will be heard if any of the following conditions exist:

• Speaker and projector not connected by speaker cord. _

• Volume control not turned on.

• Exciter lamp control not turned on. Red window not illuminated.

• Exciter lamp burned out, or not located on all three studs,

• Fuse blown.

• Tubes or photoelectric cell need replacement.

For sound pictures, be sure the exciter lamp control knob is turned beyond ON as far as it

will go and that the motor control knob is at sound speed. For silent pictures, not accompanied

by phonograph or microphone, the speaker need not be connected to the projector, nor the

amplifier turned on.

Pictures will be out of focus if the gate is left open during projection. Loss of loop will cause

unsteadiness in the projected pictures.

CLEANING LENSES AND REFLECTOR

The condensing lenses and the projection lens of the

Sound Kodascope are lumenized, that is, a special hard

coating has been applied to all the air-glass surfaces.

The tinted appearance of the lenses is due to this treat-

ment, which increases the light transmitted, thus increasing

the brilliance of the image on the screen.

like any fine lens, the projection lens on your projector

should be cleaned with care. Remove the lens by drawing

it out of the lens holder. With a soft lintless cloth, or

Kodak lens Cleaning Paper, carefully wipe the two lens

surfaces.

To clean the

CONDENSER lENS,

remove the

LAMPHOUSING

as described on page

III.

Remove the condenser lens from

the housing and clean it in the same manner as the pro-

jection lens. When replacing the condenser lens, push it in

as far as it will go and tighten the lock screw. Clean the

REFLECTOR

without removing it from the lamphousing.

Do not wet the cloth used for cleaning lenses.

is required, breathe on the lenses or use a drop of Kodak

lens Cleaner.

CLEANING THE GATE

To remove small pieces of film emulsion which are visible

on the screen during. projection, remove the lens, reach

throunh

the lens holder with a brush or small stick, and

carefully run the brush or stick around the edges of the

cperture.

To remove particles of emulsion from the surface of the

GATE,

use a strip of soft cloth about the width of the fllrn.

Rotate the threading knob until the pull-down claws are

withdrawn. Dampen the cloth and thread it into the gate

just as film is threaded, close the gate, and draw the cloth

up and down.
