• Keep your work area and the server clean and clear of debris.
• Before openin the system cabinet, unplu the power cord.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
CAUTION:
ESD can damage electronic components when they are improperly handled, and can result in total or
intermittent failures. Always follow ESD-prevention procedures when removing and replacing
components.
To prevent ESD dama e:
• Use an ESD wrist or ankle strap and ensure that it makes skin contact. Connect the equipment end of the
strap to an unpainted metal surface on the chassis.
• Avoid touchin the adapter a ainst your clothin . The wrist strap protects components from ESD on the
body only.
• Handle the adapter by its bracket or ed es only. Avoid touchin the printed circuit board or the
connectors.
• Put the adapter down only on an antistatic surface such as the ba supplied in your kit.
• If you are returnin the adapter to Lenovo Product Support, put it back in its antistatic ba immediately.
If a wrist strap is not available, round yourself by touchin the metal chassis before handlin the adapter or
any other part of the computer.
Chapter 1. A out this guide
This Installation and User Guide explains how to install and set up your ThinkSystem adapters, includin
driver installation, BIOS operations, troubleshootin tips, and instructions for flashin the adapter firmware.
The followin adapter models are described in this uide:
• ThinkSystem 4350–8i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA
• ThinkSystem 4350–16i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA
• ThinkSystem RAID 5350–8i PCIe 12Gb Adapter
• ThinkSystem RAID 9350–8i 2GB Flash PCIe 12Gb Adapter
• ThinkSystem RAID 9350–16i 4GB Flash PCIe 12Gb Adapter
Before you egin
This uide is intended for data stora e and IT professionals who are responsible for installin , confi urin ,
and maintainin the ThinkSystem adapters in computers or servers in a "cloud" or data center environment.
You should be familiar with computer hardware, operatin system administration, data stora e devices, and
SAS and Serial ATA (SATA) technolo y.
If you are responsible for mana in stora e resources on the adapters, you should be familiar with RAID
technolo y and creation of bootable hardware RAID volumes.
Terms
Many of the terms and concepts referred to in this uide are known to computer users by multiple names.
This uide uses these terms:
• Host Bus Adapter or HBA (also known as controller, adapter, or I/O card)
• Disk drive (also known as hard disk, hard drive, or hard disk drive)
• Solid State Drive (also known as SSD or non-rotatin stora e media)
• Enclosure (also known as a stora e enclosure, or disk drive enclosure)

This chapter provides an overview of features of the ThinkSystem 4350 Series adapters.

• Support for SAS and SATA Hard Disk Drives (HDD), Solid State Drives (SSD), and SAS tape drives
• UEFI pre-boot BIOS
• Flash ROM for updates to firmware and BIOS
• Up to 8 ports, 12 Gbps SAS I/O and 8 Gbps PCIe I/O with ThinkSystem 4350-8i
• Up to 16 ports, 12 Gbps SAS I/O and 8 Gbps PCIe I/O with ThinkSystem 4350-16i
• SAS 3.0, PCIe 3.0
• Low-profile MD2 form factor
• Mini-SAS HD connectors
• Thermal sensor, with lo in capabilities

Visual indicators
LEDs on ThinkSystem 4350 Series adapters provide a visual indication for the board hardware status. The
LED locations vary, and may be on the front of the board or back of the board (see Fi ure 1 “ThinkSystem
4350 Series LED locations” on pa e 4), and include DDR LEDs (also referred to as Flash-Based Write Cache,
or FBWC, LEDs) and status LEDs. The LED states are described in Table 2 “ThinkSystem 4350 Series Status
LEDs” on pa e 4.
Front panel brackets have three holes for the Heartbeat LED, Fault LED, and Crypto LED.
