Breastmilkisbestforyourbaby
The close bond between mother and child is promoted in a unique way by
breastfeeding. Breastmilk is the only source of nutrition that contains all the
necessary elements such as protein, fat, sugar, etc. in the correct quantities
and composition. The antibodies contained in breast milk are like an injection
for your child against infections, diarrhea, colic and otitis media.
The benefits for the mother include contraction of the uterus in a natural way,
reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer and, in most cases, weight reduc-
tion. If breastfeeding is not always possible, a Medela breastpump can ensure
that your child gets the valuable breastmilk it needs. Our best wishes to you
and your baby.
Hygiene
We recommend that the hands be thoroughly washed with soap and water
before using the breastpump. The breast and surrounding area should be
cleaned with a damp cloth. Use of soap or alcohol can dry out the nipple skin
and cause cracked nipples.
If the collected breastmilk is used to feed a premature or sick baby, it is impor-
tant that the bacteria count is kept as low as possible. This is accomplished
by stripping the breast: hand express the first few squirts of breastmilk and
discard the milk.
GeneralInformation
Be comfortably seated and relax. Use a footrest, when pump ing your breast
or when feeding your baby. Elevating your feet puts you into proper sitting po-
sition to avoid stress on the lower back and perineum. Hold the breastshield
between index finger and middle finger and press it gently but firmly over the
nipple, while supporting the breast a little with the same hand.
Experiment with different vacuum levels. Choose the level which works best
for you and does not cause you any discomfort. Some time may be needed
before milk flow is adequate. This is normal and the quantity of milk produced
may vary.
PumpingTime
Milk is produced on a supply and demand basis. Frequent pumping and com-
pletely emptying the breasts encourages the increase of milk supply. The milk
ejection response can be stimulated through breast massage before or while
pumping. In creasing the frequency of pumping sessions is more effective for
increasing the volume of milk than increasing the duration of each episode. If
the breasts are not engorged and if not otherwise directed by the doctor, use
the table below as a guide.

StorageofBreastmilk
Do not let breastmilk stand at room temperature. To inhibit the growth of
bacteria, breastmilk which is not used immediately must be refrigerated or, if
stored for more than 24 hours, must be frozen.
For freezing, do not fill bottles more than ¾ full, to allow space for
expansion or use thePump&SaveTMBreastmilkBags. In the deep free-
zer (–18 °C) breastmilk can be safely stored for approximately three months.
Never add warm milk to frozen milk.
Thaw frozen milk by holding the container under warm water or leave it for 12
hours in the refrigerator. Do not thaw frozen breastmilk in a microwave or in
boiling water. Before feeding, shake the bottle to blend any fat that has sepa-
rated. Check with your hospital for specific storage instructions.
Cleaning/Sterilization
Important:
For cleaning/sterilizing purposes, the valve must always be removed from the
bre astshield and the membrane is to be taken off the valve head. For hygienic
reasons it is important to rinse the breastshield from all directions, including
upside down. Wipe the breastpump unit with a damp (not wet) cloth. If the
tubing show traces of milk, they have to be cleaned as well as the gaskets.
Remove the gasket according to the description on page 11. Wash gaskets
and tubing with warm soapy water, rinse with clear water and dry thoroughly.

Prior to initital use and subsequently once daily, the individual com-
ponents which come in contact with milk must be rinsed and placed in a sauce-
pan of sufficient capacity. Fill the latter with cold water until the components
are well covered, heat it up and allow to boil for 5 minutes.
After draining the water off, the hot items should be spread out on a clean
towel to cool and dry. Instead of boiling, you can put the disassembled parts
in a dishwasher and run a complete standard program.
Each time they have been used, all items (except for the breastpump)
should be washed in lukewarm water containing a gentle clean ing agent and
then rinsed in fresh water. Allow parts to dry in the air on a dry cloth.

1. Snap the membrane onto the valve head.
(Remove membrane for cleaning.)
2. Fit the valve to the breastshield (do not push too hard, so that it can easily
be removed for cleaning).
3. Screw the bottle onto the breastshield.
4. Insert the end of the tubing with the white connector into the breastshield.

5. Connect the other end of the tube to the breastpump.
Follow steps 1–5 for the second breastshield.
6. Insert the power connector into the connection socket on the breastpump.
Plug in the mains adapter. UseonlytheoriginalMedelaadapter.Other

7. Set the vacuum regulator to
minimum and switch on the
breastpump. Adjust the va-
cuum to your Maximum Com-
fort Vacuum™. This is the
highest vacuum you can use and
still feel comfortable (different for
every mother). To find your Ma-
ximum Comfort Vacuum incre-
ase vacuum until pumping feels
slightly uncomfortable (not pain-
ful), then decrease slightly.

Singlepumping
Follow steps 1 to 8, pages 7–9.
Close the second connection on the breastpump with the closing cap.
88. Center the nipple in the breast-
shield tunnel. Turn on the pump
and check the following points:
Your breastshield is the right size
if your answer to the following
questions is «Yes»:
• Is your nipple moving freely in the tunnel?
• Is minimal or no areolar tissue being pulled into the tunnel of the
breastshield?
• Do you see a gentle, rhythmical motion in the breast with each cycle of the
pump?
• Do you feel the breast emptying all over?
• Is your nipple pain-free?
If your answer to any of the above questions is «No», try a larger (or smaller)
breastshield.
A correctly fitted breastshield avoids compression of any milk ducts during
pumping to ensure optimal breast emptying and maximum milk output.

Batteryoperation
If the mains adapter cannot be used,
the Mini Electric Plus Breastpump
can also be used with batteries. Two
C Baby LR 14 1.5 V alkaline batteries
are required for this purpose. Leak-
proof batteries should always be
used to protect the unit. If the suction
rhythm becomes too slow, replace
the batteries.
• Press the tab (PRESS) to open the cover of the battery compartment.
• Insert two 1,5 V batteries (c.f. «Battery operation» for the required battery
specifica tions). Attention: Observe correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated
inside the battery compartment.
• Close the battery compartment until the cover snaps into place.
The batteries do not need to be removed if the mains adapter is used for
pumping.
