Uses
The Single Deluxe™ breastpump
is ideal for:
•
Collecting breastmilk
during short-term separation
of mother and baby.
• Maintaining a milk supply if
breastfeeding is temporarily
interrupted.
• Relieving engorgement or
sore nipples. Pumping with
simultaneous massage can
help relieve engorgement.
The Single Deluxe breastpump
is for occasional use, designed
for moms who nurse their
babies for most feedings.
Note: If moms are away
frequently, such as returning
to work, a Medela daily-use breast-
pump is recommended.
For moms with babies that
cannot nurse at all due to medical
reasons, a Medela hospital-grade
breastpump is recommended to
initiate and maintain milk supply.
Hospital-grade breastpumps are
available for use in the home,
usually on a rental basis. For the
location of a Medela rental station
in your area, call 1-800-TELL YOU
or visit www.medela.com

Single Deluxe™ Breastpump Instructions
Some parts may be pre-assembled.
1. Follow cleaning instructions on page 2.
2. Snap membrane onto valve until
membrane lies completely flat.
3. Push assembled valve & membrane
onto breastshield.
4. Screw bottle onto breastshield.
5. Align the raised edge on the back of the
breastshield with the ridge on the under-
side of the battery cover. Press the motor
firmly onto the breastshield.
6. Lock the motor onto the breastshield
by rotating clockwise until it stops.
Battery Operation
1.
To install batteries, slide off the battery
compartment cover by grasping both sides
and gently rocking the cover back and forth.
Install two fresh AA 1.5 V batteries. While
the pump will work with alkaline, disposable
or nicad rechargeable batteries, alkaline
batteries are recommended for optimum
performance.
CAUTION: When using the pump with batteries, the pumping cycle may slow as the
batteries wear down. Slower cycles may cause some discomfort. If this happens,
reduce the vacuum with the vacuum regulator and replace the batteries as soon as
possible.
NOTE: You do not need to remove the batteries to use electricity to power the pump.
Electric Operation
1.
Insert the metal plug on the end of the
transformer cord into the hole on the side of
the motor unit.
2.
Set vacuum regulator ring to “MIN.” Adjust
for comfort once pumping begins.
3.
Center breastshield over your nipple and
start pumping.
5
6
Pumping Tips:
• To increase vacuum, turn regulator ring towards “MAX.”
• To decrease vacuum, turn regulator ring towards “MIN.”
•
For best results, pump at the highest vacuum level that is most comfortable.
•
Caution: pushing breastshield too firmly against your breast may reduce
milk flow.
• After about 5 minutes, switch to the other breast. Then, switch back
and forth between breasts several times, pumping for 20-30 minutes
total.
Important note: If you experience discomfort, contact your lactation professional.

Storing & Handling Breastmilk
Check with your hospital for specific storage instructions.
When freezing, do not fill containers more than 3/4 full to allow space
for expansion. Label containers with the date of pumping.
Thawing frozen breastmilk:
• Thaw frozen breastmilk by holding the container under warm water.
Milk may be defrosted in the refrigerator overnight. Gently shake
the container to blend any fat that has separated.
Caution:
• Do not thaw frozen breastmilk in a microwave or in a pan of
boiling water. Microwaving can cause severe burns to baby’s mouth
from hot spots that develop in the milk during microwaving. It can
also change the composition of breastmilk.
• If adding expressed breastmilk to container of already frozen
breastmilk, make sure to add a lesser amount than the already
frozen amount.
7
Important Note: If the temperature in the room, car or outdoors exceeds
77 °F / 25 °C, chill milk immediately to preserve freshness.
