Your new Design Food Dehydrator Natural Plus will be an excellent assistant for getting special ingredients for cooking and baking as well as healthy little snacks.

Home-made dried foodstus contain no preservatives, colourants, and articial avourings. Moreover, the loss of nutritions is reduced in comparison to commercial

products. Due to the dehydration of your food the taste is intensied, and the shelf life is prolonged. Via the hot air circulation system, vegetables, fruits, meet, sh,

etc. are dried conveniently and energy saving. The temperature and dehydrating time may be adjusted according to the various types of food and your liking.

The eort for operating and cleaning the Food Dehydrator is reduced to a minimum.Thus, the appliance will give you a plain way to enlarge the variety of your meals

in a quite delicious manner.

These instructions for use will inform you on the various functions and features, which make it easy to take pleasure in your new Food Dehydrator. We hope that you

will enjoy your new Food Dehydrator.

Before using your new refrigerator, please read this operation manual to ensure that you gain the maximum benet from it.

1. IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS

Carefully read all instructions, before operating this appliance and save for further reference. Do not attempt to use this appliance for any other than

the intended use, described in this booklet. Any other use, especially misuse, can cause severe injuries or damage by electric shock, overheating, and

re.

These instructions are an essential part of the appliance. Do not pass the appliance without this booklet to third parties. Any operation, repair, and

technical maintenance of the appliance or any part of it other than described in these instructions may only be performed at an authorised service

centre (see:‘Warranty’).

GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

• ThisapplianceisforhouseholduseonlyandNOT intended for use in moving vehicles. Do

not operate or store the appliance in humid or wet areas or outdoors. Any use of accessories,

attachments or spare parts that are not recommended by the manufacturer or damaged in

any way may result in injuries to persons and/or damage due to re, electric shock, or harmful

substances.

• Theapplianceisdesignedforpartlyunattendedoperation.However, always ensure correct

functioning. before leaving the appliance operate unattended. Wipe o any liquids that

dripped onto the top of the heating base. Ensure that the count-down of the dehydrating

time has started already. After use always switch o the appliance (holding the On/O button

pressed until the LCD display gets dark) and unplug the appliance from the power supply.

• Checktheentireapplianceregularlyforproperoperation.Donotoperatetheappliance,when

the appliance or any part of it is likely to be damaged, or has been subject to inadmissible strain

(e.g. over-heating, mechanical or electric shock), or if the appliance is not working properly.

Immediately unplug the appliance, if any problems occur during operation. Do not use any parts

of the appliance with any other device or for any purpose not described in this booklet.

• Operatetheapplianceonawellaccessible,stable,level,clean,dry,andsuitablelargetableor

counter that is resistant against heat and water. Always wipe o spilled liquids immediately.

Do not place any clothes or tissue or other foreign objects under or on the appliance during

operation, to avoid risk of re, electric shock and overheating.

Do not block the ventilation slits in the heating base and the cover.

• Alwayskeeptheapplianceinsucientdistancetotheedgeofthetableorcounterandtoother

objects. For operation, leave at least 50 cm of free space above the appliance and at least 10

cm of free space on each side, to ensure good ventilation and avoid damage due to steam and

overheating. Do not operate the appliance under overhanging boards and drop-lights or near

any delicate objects (e.g. curtains). Always remove the food trays, before moving the appliance to

avoid that the food trays fall.

• Thisappliancemaybeusedorhandledbypersons(includingchildrenfrom8yearsandabove)

with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, if

they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance by a person

responsible for their safety and understand the possible hazards. Even cleaning may not be

performed by children without supervision. Children must always be supervised to ensure that

they do not play with the appliance or any parts of the appliance or the packaging. Always

keep the appliance where it is dry, frost-free, and clean, and where young children cannot reach

it. Do not leave the appliance or any part of it unattended, when in reach of young children.

• Theapplianceisheatedelectrically.Donotplacetheapplianceoranypartofitonornearhot

surfaces (e.g. burner, heater, or oven).

Do not expose the appliance to direct sunlight for an elongated time.

Do not handle the appliance or any part of it with violence.

• Toenablecorrectoperation,itisessentialtokeepthecoverclosedandthefoodtraysmay

not be over-loaded. Do not block the openings in the white fan assembly at the centre of

the heating base to avoid overheating and damage to the appliance. Do not poke in the

openings of the fan assembly.

• Evenwiththecoverclosedproperly,steamwillescapeduringoperation.

Do not hold your face or any moisture-sensitive objects over or directly near the appliance during

operation. Beware of steam and condensate, when removing the cover and the food trays. After

operation, do not place the food tray and/or cover on any heat-sensitive or moisture-sensitive

surfaces.

• Donotplaceanyhardand/orheavyobjectsonorintheapplianceoranypartofit.Thefoodtrays

are not suitable for any too heavy pieces of food.

• AlwaysswitchOFFtheappliance(holdingtheOn/ObuttonpresseduntiltheLCDdisplaygets

dark), unplug, and wait for the appliance to cool down completely, before cleaning the appliance

and when the appliance is not in use. Do not use any hard, sharp-edged, or abrasive objects with

the appliance (e.g. knives, scrapers). Do not use any abrasive cleaners, cleaning pads (e.g.

metal scouring pads), or any corrosive chemicals (e.g. bleach) for cleaning. Do not place the

heating base or power cord of the appliance in water or in an automatic dishwasher!

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS FOR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

The appliance is heated electrically. Place the appliance near a suitable wall power outlet to connect

the appliance to a protected mains power supply with protective conductor (earth/ground)

connected properly.

Ensure that the ratings of your mains power supply correspond to the requirements of the

appliance (220 - 240 V AC, 50/60 Hz, 8 A).

• Theinstallationofaresidualcurrentoperatedcircuitbreaker(r.c.c.b.)withamaximumrated

residual operating current of 30 mA in the supplying electrical circuit is strongly recommended. If

in doubt, contact your electrician for further information.

• Invariousforeigncountries,thespecicationsforpowersuppliesaresubjecttoincompatible

norms. Therefore it is possible that power supplies in foreign countries do not meet the

requirements for safe operation of the appliance. Thus, before operating the appliance abroad,

ensure that safe operation is possible.

• Donotuseanydesktopmultisocketoutlet,externaltimer,remotecontrolsystems,orextension

cord. The power outlet must always be easily accessible so that it would be possible to unplug the

appliance immediately in case of any malfunction or danger.

• Alwayshandlepowercordswithcare.Thepowercordmaynevertouchhotsurfaces,sharpedges,

or any moving parts. Do not let the plug or power cord hang over the edge of the table or counter.

Ensure that no one will pull the appliance by the power cord. Power cords may never be knotted,

twisted, pulled, strained or squeezed. Always grasp the plug to disconnect the power cord. Do not

touch the appliance or power plug with wet hands, while the appliance is connected to the power

supply.

• Donotplaceorimmersetheheatingbaseorpowercordinwateroranyotherliquid.DONOTspill

or drip any liquids on the heating base or the power cord to avoid risk of re and electric shock.

Dab dry extremely wet food, before loading the food trays. When liquids ran under the heating

base or run down on the exterior of the heating base, immediately unplug and dry the appliance

(see:‘Care and Cleaning’). Little amounts (some droplets) of water dripping from your food onto

the heating base are harmless.

4. TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS

• Beforedehydrating/dryingyourfood,somestepsofpreparationareneeded.Refertothefollowingchapter‘Preparations’.Onlyuseawlessfoodfordehydration.

• Thecorrectdehydratingtimedependsonthetypeoffood,thefreshnessandthicknessofslicesorpiecesandthedesiredconsistency(see:‘Preparations’).

• Verylargerpieceswillbedehydratedbetter,whencutintoslicesorstripes.However,verysmallapricots,peaches,andpearsmaybedriedinhalves.Inthese

cases, expect a considerably elongated dehydrating time. However, for tting properly onto the food trays of the appliance and, for free circulation of air, leaving

a suitable distance to the food tray or cover above, any pieces of food may not be thicker than 2 cm (4/5 inch).

• Flavoursofstronglyaromatictypesoffood(e.g.onions,garlic)couldinuenceotherdelicatefoodstus,whendriedinthesamedehydrationcycle.Therefore,

you should load your food sorted according to their various tastes and types and process them in separated dehydration cycles. Clean the appliance, before

starting the following dehydration cycles to avoid any interference of avours. To optimize the air ow within the dehydration chamber (built by the food trays),

placeyourfoodonthefoodtraysbeginningwiththeupperfoodtraydowntothelowestfoodtray.Toallowanecientaircirculation,alwaysuseatleast5food

trays, even with some food trays left empty. When food trays are lled with thick pieces, you may alternate empty food trays and loaded food trays.

• Donotplaceanyfooddirectlyonthetopplateoftheheatingbase!Additionally,ensurethatnopiecesoffoodhangdownfromthelowestfoodtray

and block the air vents of the fan assembly.

• Spreadyourpiecesoffoodonthefoodtraysseparatedfromeachotherwithsomefreespaceleftbetweenthesinglepieces.toensuregoodcirculationofair.

This way, your food will be dried evenly and you avoid that the pieces will stick together. Do not overload the trays.

• Alwaysclosethedehydrationchamberwiththecover.Otherwise,thefunctioningoftheapplianceaswellasfavourandqualityofyourfoodwillbeaected

disadvantageously. Use the pause function via the Start/Stop button, if you wish to open the dehydration chamber. Immediately after closing the dehydration

chamber, continue operation by pressing the Start/Stop button again (see: ‘Operation / Pause Function’). Avoid elongated interruptions. During operation, the

temperature on the lowest food tray will be the highest. Thus, you should place food needing a higher temperature for dehydration on the lower food trays. For

getting an even result on all food trays, you should change the sequence of food trays on the heating base several times during the dehydration process. For this,

use the pause function.

• Afterthedehydrationprocess,storedriedfoodwithinsterilizedanddryvesselsintherefrigerator.Ifpossible,youshouldusethePHILCOVacuumSealerfor

storing your food in evacuated bags and containers. Keep in mind, that the consistency of dried food may change during storage. You should consume dried

food before long.

• Usevesselsresistanttoheatuptoatleast100°Cforstorage.Sterilizethevesselsusingboilingwater.Toavoidgettinggermsinagain,donotwipedrythevessels,

but leave them dry naturally.

5. PREPARATIONS

Clean all pieces of food carefully under running tap water. Remove all inedible parts (e.g. shells, stalks, seeds, and stones). Depending on the type of food, you should

perform the following additional preparation processes. However, the hints given below are recommendations only. Possibly, you may prefer other methods. In all

cases, you should dab dry the food to be dried, before loading the food tray.

IMPORTANT:

The maximum thickness of any pieces of food to be dehydrated may not exceed approx. 2 cm (4/5 inch).

DEHYDRATION OF FRUIT

Combine some water and juice of the fruit to be dried (mixture 1:8) and dip the pieces in this liquid for approx. 2 minutes. For types of fruit sensitive to discolouration

by oxygen (e.g. apples), you may add some lemon juice to the liquid before dipping.

DEHYDRATING VEGETABLES

Wash thoroughly and remove all inedible parts (e.g. stalks).

Most vegetables should be blanched before dehydration (heated in water, steam or oil for approx. 3-5 minutes). Thereafter, drain thoroughly, dip in lemon juice for

approx. 2 minutes and dab dry.

MEAT, POULTRY AND FISH

• Marinatemeatinsaltyliquidtoremovethemoistureandkeepyourmeatfresh.Youshoulduse1/4teaspoonofsaltfor1/2glassofliquidandotheravoursand

seasons to taste (e.g. tomato sauce, garlic, onion, and pepper). After marinating, cut the meat into stripes and dehydrate via the appliance for approx. 2 - 8 hours

untilthestripesaresucientlydry.

• Poultryshouldbecooked,beforestartingthedehydrationprocess.Steamorroastthepiecesuntiltheyarewelldone.Setthedehydratingtimeto2-8hours.

• Fishshouldbesteamedorroasted.Forexample,placelletsintotheovenandbakeforapprox.20minutes.Setthedehydratingtimeto2-8hours.

OTHER TYPES OF FOOD

• Washherbs, dab dry, and remove any already wilted parts. For drying, spread the whole leaves on the food trays. Store the dried herbs in whole. Just before

usage, remove the stalks and grind or crumble the dry leaves. This is the best way to avoid the loss of avour.

• Whendehydratingvanilla pods, remove any inedible parts from the pods and dab dry.Thereafter, spread the vanilla pods on a food tray and start the appliance

with an dehydrating time of 2 - 6 hours.

• Bread slices should be dried without the crust. Use a dehydrating time of 30 minutes to 2 hours. You will get a delicious snack, when seasoning the bread slices

before dehydration.

6. BEFORE FIRST USE

WARNING – DO NOT let young children play with the appliance, or any part of it, or the packaging! Always unplug the appliance and leave the appliance

cool down, before cleaning it, and when it is not in use. Do not place or immerse the heating base or power cord in water or other liquids or spill any liquids on the

heating base or power cord. Do not use any abrasive or corrosive cleaners for cleaning to avoid damage to the surfaces. Do not place the heating base or power

cord in an automatic dishwasher.

1. Unpack the appliance and all parts and accessories carefully. Check that no parts are damaged or missing (see: ‘Knowing Your New Food Dehydrator’).

Carefully remove all packaging, shipping materials, stickers, and promotional materials. However, DO NOT remove the model label.

2. Before rst use and after a longer period of storage, clean all parts of the appliance (see:‘Care and Cleaning’).

IMPORTANT - the trays have two dierent positions. One is intended for storing – in this one the individual trays can be tted together. The other one –

which can be achieved by rotating the tray by 180° – forms space between the trays that is used to dry food.

7. OPERATION

WARNING – Always ensure that the appliance and all its parts and accessories are out of reach of young children. The appliance is intended for dehydrating

edible food via an electrically powered heating system. Do not attempt to heat the appliance or its parts by any other source of heat. Do not pour or spill any liquids

into the heating base of the appliance to avoid injuries and damage due to overheating, re, and electric shock. Improper use or misuse may cause severe injuries

and damage. Always unplug the appliance, when the appliance is not in use.

If water runs on or under the heating base during operation, immediately unplug the appliance (see:‘Solving Problems’). However, some droplets of juices on the

top of the heating base are quite normal and no need for concern. Do not use violence. Do not place the appliance near the edge of the working space or on inclined

surfaces. Ensure to place the appliance on a level, at, stable, and dry surface.

During operation: Do not move the appliance during operation. The ventilation slits at the bottom of the heating base and the steam vent in the cover may not be

blocked. Do not block the openings in the white fan assembly at the centre of the heating base to avoid overheating and damage to the appliance. Do not place any

food onto the top plate of the heating base.

IMPORTANT - The maximum thickness of any pieces of food to be dehydrated may not exceed approx. 2cm (4/5 inch). Otherwise the dehydration chamber cannot

be closed correctly and the air circulation is hindered.

1. Prepare your food (see:‘Tips for Best Results’and ‘Preparations’). Dab dry very wet food.

2. Remove the cover and food trays. Then, place the heating base of the appliance on a suitable table or counter near an appropriate wall power outlet.

3. Spread your food on the food trays, leaving some space between the individual pieces to allow unhindered air-circulation. In the chapter‘Tips for Best Results’

you will nd a lot of useful hints for getting the optimum colour, avour, and consistency.

4. Place the loaded food trays onto the heating base (see:‘Tips for Best Results’).

With some food trays empty, you should place the empty food trays on the heating base rst. Close the dehydration chamber (built by the food trays) via the

cover.

IMPORTANT - Always close the appliance by the designated cover before switching on the appliance. The appliance will not work properly without the cover, and

consistency and avours of your food will be aected disadvantageously.

NOTE

The type, amount, consistency, and thickness of the food pieces will determine the required dehydrating time and result.

5. Insertthepowerplugintothewallpoweroutlet.TheLCDdisplayilluminatesandshowsthedefaultvaluesoftemperatureanddehydratingtime:40°Cand10:00

hours.

CAUTION – Do not pour any water into the appliance. However, during operation, some drops of juices may accumulate on the base. This may happen with very

juicy types of food and is no reason for concern.

6. Press the SET button to select the temperature adjusting mode. The temperature value ashes on the LCD display. Turn the adjusting knob to select the desired

temperaturebetween35°Cand70°Cinstepsof1°C.PresstheSETbuttonagaintoswitchtothetimeradjustingmode.Turntheadjustingdialforselectingthe

desired dehydrating time within the possible range of 30 minutes to 7 hours in steps of 30 minutes. Press the Start/Stop button



to start the dehydration

cycle.

7. The fan starts operation audibly. On the LCD display, the heating icon ashes during the complete dehydration cycle. As soon as the actual temperature within

the dehydration chamber reaches the set temperature, the timer starts counting down the set dehydrating time.

8. Simply wait until the dehydration cycle has nished with the time display reaching“0”, an acoustic signal sounds with the time-out icon



ashing on the LCD

display for some seconds. Thereafter, the appliance stops operation automatically and the LCD display is deactivated.

CAUTION – Before leaving the appliance operate without supervision, always ensure correct operation (see:‘Important Safeguards’). Wipe o liquids that

dripped onto the heating base. Check, whether the count-down of the dehydrating time started to ensure that the appliance will shut-o automatically

in time.

NOTE

You can Interrupt or cancel any dehydration cycle at any time you like (see:‘Pause Function’). Also, use this pause function, if you wish to change the set temperature,

check the consistency of your food, or change the sequence of food trays on the heating base, while a dehydration cycle is running.

IMPORTANT - Being aware of steam and condensate, when removing the food trays. The food trays of the appliance and your food may be a little hot.

9. Withyourfooddriedsuciently,graspthecompletedehydrationchamber(foodtraysandcover)bythehandlesatbothsidesandliftthedehydrationchamber

from the heating base. Then remove your food. Place your food in a sterilized container or bag. If possible, evacuate the container or bag. Store your food in the

refrigerator (see:‘Tips for Best Results’).

NOTE

Do not move the appliance with the food trays mounted on the heating base. Otherwise the food trays may fall. Take the food trays o the appliance before moving

the heating base. You may ll the food trays with another portion of food immediately and start a new dehydration cycle. In this case, switch on the appliance again

withthedefaultsettings(50°C,6:00hours)byshortlypressingtheOn/Obutton.Thereafter,selecttheappropriatetemperatureanddehydratingtimeasdescribed

above.

NOTE

Do not leave the appliance operate uselessly to avoid useless energy consumption.You may cancel any dehydration cycle at any time by holding the On/O button

pressed until the LCD display gets dark.

10. If you do not wish to operate the appliance again, ensure that the appliance is switched o (LCD display is dark and empty) and unplug the appliance.

11. Clean the appliance and all used parts after each use (see:‘Care and Cleaning’).

PAUSE FUNCTION

You should use the pause function, whenever you wish to open the dehydration chamber during operation. Additionally, with the dehydration cycle interrupted,

you can modify the set temperature.

NOTE

As soon as possible, re-assume operation of the heating element and fan via the Start/Stop button to avoid that the interior of the dehydration chamber cools down.

1. For interrupting the operation of the heating element and fan, simply press the Start/Stop button



once. The LCD display is illuminated and the set

dehydrating time is shown.

2. If you wish to change the set temperature, press the SET button. Then turn the adjusting dial to enter the desired temperature.

3. If you wish to re-assume operation, press the Start/Stop button again. The remaining dehydrating time of the current dehydration cycle is shown again.To switch

o the appliance and cancel the current dehydration cycle, hold the On/O button



pressed until the LCD display gets dark. If you wish to dehydrate another

portionoffood,youcanswitchontheapplianceagainwiththedefaultsettings(50°C,6:00hours)bypressingtheOn/Obuttonshortly.

MUTE FUNCTION

Mute beeper

Press and hold the SET button for more than 3 seconds to activate mute mode. The device will not beep at the end of the drying process and displays symbol ( ).

This is handy if you wish to dry overnight. The setting is saved until you press the SET button again for longer than 3 seconds and the mute symbol disappears.
