Purpose
This Quick Reference Guide is designed to assist you during
routine LS 5300/LS 5400 operation. Detailed information about
unpacking, installation, performance specifications, and
troubleshooting, can be found in the LS 5300 Product
Reference Guide.
Product Description
LS 5300
The Symbol LS 5300 is a high performance laser scanner that
allows you to quickly and accurately read a bar code, with a
minimum of effort. The LS 5300 can be installed in a variety
of ways. Usually it is either mounted on the checkstand
counter top or built directly into the checkstand.

Product Description
The LS 5400
TheLS5400isaspecialin-counterversionoftheLS5300thathas
a stainless steel top and scratch resistant glass. This scanner is
ideal for more demanding settings where hard goods such as
cans and bottles are frequently scanned. In all other aspects, the
LS5400 is identical to theLS5300.So, unless noted otherwise, all
references to the LS 5300 will also apply to the LS 5400.

Operating the LS 5300 Scanner
Turning it on
The LS 5300 does not have an on/off switch. As soon as you
plug it in, it’s ready to scan.
Indicator Lights
Notice the red and green indicator lights just below the scan
window. They provide you with information about the
scanner’s operation. Here’s what you can expect to see:
• Green light on, red light off -
This means the scanner is
on, waiting to decode a symbol.
• Green light off briefly -
Abar code has been successfully
decoded. You will also hear a beep from the scanner to
confirm this. As long as this light is off, the scanner will
not decode the same bar code again. This helps to prevent
accidental double reads.
• Green light on, red light on -
The scanner is asleep. See
Sleep Mode, on page 5.
• Anything else -
This includes, steady red light, blinking
red light, or blinking green light. The scanner is not
operating normally. Contact the technical person in
charge of scanning at your location, or see the LS 5300
Product Reference Guide for the number of the Symbol
Support Center.

Operating the LS 5300 Scanner
Programming
Generally, the technical person in charge of scanning will
customize the scanner for your particular application through
the use of programming bar codes, which are found in the
LS 5300 Product Reference Guide. If you are programming the
scanner yourself, consult the Product Reference Guide for more
information.
Scanning a Bar Code
The shaded areas below represent the scan pattern. For the best
scanning performance, the countertop or surface area covered
by the scan pattern should be free of any designs (e.g. stripes,
patterns). Ideally, that area should be a light, solid color. To scan
a bar code, move an item through the scan pattern, in the
direction of the arrows, with the bar code label facing the
scanner window. The scanner will beep when a bar code has
been decoded successfully.

Sleep Mode
If there is no scanning activity for a specified period of time,
the scanner will enter a “sleep” mode. You select this period of
time by scanning the appropriate bar code in the Product
Reference Guide. This sleep mode saves power and extends
the life of the scanner. The LS 5300 will automatically awaken
as soon as you pass a bar coded item past the scan window.

If the scanner is not operating according to your needs, contact
the technical person in charge of scanning. If there is no one in
charge of scanning, see the LS 5300 Product Reference Guide for
the number of the Symbol Support Center.
Some Helpful Bar Codes
You can adjust the volume and the frequency (tone) of the
scanner’s beeper by scanning the appropriate bar codes
beginning on page 31.

Description du produit
LS 5400
Le LS 5400 est une version spéciale intégrée du LS 5300 dotée
d’un revêtement en acier et d’une vitre à l’épreuve des rayures.
Ce lecteur est d'une résistance à toute épreuve, même dans les
environnements les plus difficiles (lecture répétée d’articles tels
que les bouteilles ou autres produits similaires). Toutes les
autres fonctions sont identiques à celles du LS 5300. Par
conséquent, sauf indication contraire, toutes les caractéristiques
du LS 5300 s’appliquent également au LS 5400.
