1.0 Specification

Display 5 digit LED, 10mm character height. Programmable for 0, 1, 2 or 3 decimal

points. Range +99999 / -9999 Least significant digit can be set to count in steps

of 1,2,5 or 10

Load cell input Direct connection of up to x 350R load cells. An internal amplifier feeds this

signal into a 2 bit ADC which takes up to 120 readings/sec.

Calibration Simple auto calibration facility using a known weight. Settings stored on non-

volatile memory.

Relays 2 relays rated 1A, 120VAC/2 VDC. Can be configured to latch. Relay status

indicators on front panel. Where relays are connected to a contactor or another

relay, the coil of the contactor/relay should have a suppressor fitted.

Analogue out Set as 0-5V, 0-10V, -20mA, 0-20mA or 0-2 mA. Resolution16 bits

Comms. RS232. Baud rates 2 00, 9600, 38k & 115k2 selectable. Format is 8 data bits, 1

stop bit and no parity. Can be linked to a printer or a remote display. A ticket

printout can be produced including a title, reference number and reading with

units. With the real time clock option the ticket can also include time & date.

Because the functions are built in, any standard printer can be used. An RS 85

option is also available for use with an SY 85 adaptor.

2 Operation

The display can show live readings or can be set to peak hold mode (see 3. ) which allows peak and

trough values to be viewed.

This button is used to switch the instrument to configuration mode.

The TARE button is used in configuration mode to increment digit values and for

navigation.

In normal operation it is used to tare(zero) the display.

See 2.1 Tare options for more detail. In HOLD mode pressing the button shows the trough

(min) value

The RESET button is used in configuration mode to decrement digit values and for

navigation.

In normal operation it resets latched relays (see 3.5)

In HOLD mode it resets peak/trough measurements.

This button is used to view/edit setpoint relay trip levels. It can also be used to send

information to a printer if PROG is pressed before it is released (see .3).

2.1 Tare Options

The tare button can be used to tare (zero) the display. An external normally open push button switch

can be connected to the rear panel TARE terminals to perform the same function. The single button

press performs a temporary tare. When the instrument is turned off, then back on, the tare returns to

its original stored value.

To change the stored tare value, in case for example the load cell zero has drifted, pressing TARE &

PROG will take a reading and save it as the stored tare.

Will be displayed to indicate that the tare value has been stored.

In some cases it can be useful to be able to revert to the stored tare without having to turn the

instrument off and on. For example, if a number of ingredients are being added to a vessel, such as

10kg, 25kg & 15kg of three different ingredients. Ingredient 1 could be added until the display showed

10kg. The tare is then pressed to zero the display. Ingredient 2 is added until 25kg is shown. Tare is

again pressed and ingredient 3 is added until 15kg is shown. The stored tare value can then be

restored by pressing TARE & RESET

will be shown briefly and then the total vessel contents of 50kg will be indicated.

3 Configuration

3.1 Load cell calibration

Press then PROG button then press 5 or 6 until CAL is displayed. Press the 4 key

to enter the calibration mode. The instrument can be calibrated to the load cells by

adding a known weight. Before adding a known weight, make sure you tare the instrument

before entering calibration mode.

Before changing any calibration values a PIN number has to be entered. This is not

meant to prevent access, but to prevent accidental changes being made. Without

pressing any further key, the display will change to show

after 1 second. Use the 5 6 & 4 keys until the

display shows , then press PROG.

The instrument contains a non-resettable counter which is incremented each time the

calibration is altered. To use this feature, make a note of the value on the calibration certificate. When

the unit is next calibrated the value can be checked to determine if the calibration has been altered in

the interim. To view the counter press the 4 key, then press PROG to return here.

Press the 5or 6 keys to move on to the next step.

n indicates the number of decimal places to be displayed. To change press the 4 key,

then the 5 6 keys to select the value in the range 0 – 3. When correct press PROG to return here.

Note: The decimal places value does not affect the scaling factor. If the unit was already scaled for

100.00 full scale, changing dp from 2 to 1 would leave the full scale as 1000.0

Press the 5or 6 keys to move on to the next step.

Calibration by adding a known load. The unit should already have been tared, without the known

load, before entering calibration mode. Press the 4 key, the display will show 5 hyphens with the

decimal place set according to the dp value. Use the 5 6 & 4 keys to set the display to equal the

added load value. When correct press PROG. If a problem occurs, the screen will show Err. This

usually indicates a problem with the load cell connections.

Press the 5or 6 keys to move on to the next step.

Calibration by scaling factor. A six digit scaling factor defines the displayed values. Press the 4 key,

the display will show the current value

The value is up to 99.9999, nn.nnn refers to the 1st 5 digits. Use the 5 6 & 4 keys to

adjust the value. Pressing the 4 key on the 5th digit will scroll the display to reveal the 6th digit.

Adjusting the scaling factor can be the simplest way of making fine adjustment. It is also useful to

make a note of the value after a calibration by known load.

Pressing the 5 6 keys will cycle through the calibration functions. Press PROG to exit.

3.2 Filter settings

Press the PROG button then press 5 or 6 until FIL is displayed. Press the 4 key to

indicate the current setting. n is a value between 0 and 9 indicating the level of filtering, 9 being

highest. The reading update rates depend on whether the remote display output is

enabled.

The best setting depends upon the application. For example, to capture fast peaks 0 or 1 would be

best, a fast bag filler might be best set to filter , but a tank content indicator would be best on filter 9.

Use the 5 6 keys to change the filter value. When correct press PROG.

3.3 Least significant digit count

Press the PROG button then press 5 or 6 until lsd is displayed. Press the 4 key to

indicate the current setting. The value n indicates the least significant digit increments. This can be

1's, 2's, 5's or 10's. This feature is used where the accuracy or resolution of the load

cells makes the display appear unstable and does not justify counting the least

significant digits in 1's.

Use the 5 6 keys to change the value. When correct press PROG.

3. Hold mode

Press the PROG button then press 5 or 6 until HOLD is displayed. Press the 4 key to

indicate state of peak hold mode, on or off. When hold mode is on, the instrument

will measure peaks and troughs of the measured input. The display will show the c

current peak value. Holding in the 5 key will show the trough (minimum) value.

Pressing the RESET key will clear the current values.

Use the 5 6 keys to toggle between the states. When correct press PROG.

3.5 Setpoint relays operating mode

Press the PROG button then press 5 or 6 until RELAY is displayed. Press the 4

key to indicate state of relay operating mode, latch or free. In latching mode, once a

relay is energised, it will stay on until reset. In free mode the relay will be

energised only whilst the setpoint value is exceeded. If both setpoint relays are latched,

press RESET to clear relay one then press RESET again to clear relay two. If only one relay

is latched, pressing RESET will clear it.

Use the 5 6 keys to toggle between the states. When correct press PROG.

RS232 option

.1 Baud rate

Press the PROG button then press 5 or 6 until BAUD is displayed.

Press the 4 key to indicate the current value. Baud rates available are: 115200,

38 00, 9600 and 2 00. Use the 5 6keys until the required value is shown. Press PROG to save

and exit.

.1a RS 85 address

If the instrument has been supplied for use with an RS 85 adaptor, such as the SY 85,

it requires a device address to be identifiable on the RS 85 network. The current

address is shown. To be distinguished as an address, the MSB of the transmitted byte is 1. If the

address was set as 001, the device would be accessed by transmitting $81. Use the 5 6 & 4 keys

to adjust the value.

.2 Remote Display

When the RS232 interface is fitted the option is available to connect a remote display,

such as a unit from the SY033 range. Press the 4 key to indicate state, on or off.

With remote display on, anything shown on the LED display, will also be shown on the

remote display. The information is sent to the display as an ASCII string terminated in

Carriage Return. Use the 5 6 keys to toggle between the states. When correct press

PROG.

.3 Printer

This function is available when the RS232 option is fitted. It allows a displayed value to be sent to a

printer together with an incrementing reference number. The printout also has an 8 character label

following the displayed reading which can be used to define units. A text heading can also be

included as well as a time/date stamp. To set up these features press the PROG button then

press 5 or 6 until Print is displayed.

Press the 4 key to show rEF. This is a reference number which increments each time

the displayed value is printed. To view the current value press the 4 key. To change it

press the 4 key again. Use the 5 6 & 4 keys to set the value then press PROG.

TYPE indicates the type of printout required. Press the 4 key, then the 5 6 keys to

select the type required. Type L would print a log in the form of the reference, the

reading and the text label,

Type HL would print a text header as well as the log.

When correct press PROG.

FEED defines the number of line feeds sent to the printer after text. The number

required will vary depending on the type of printer. Press the 4 key to indicate the

current setting. The value n defines the following values:

. RS232/ 85 commands

For the RS 85 version, all commands are preceded by the device address. If the address matches, a

carriage return is sent.

Command Description Response

@ Read Unit ID Model number, Firmware version and serial number.

Eg. SY035,V3.0, 123 cr

*H Programme heading A heading of up to 6 characters can be programmed to appear on the printout

Follow the *H command by the required message, terminated by carriage return if

less than 6 characters. The header is then reported back for confirmation.

*R Read display Reads whatever is displayed.

*TC Calibrate clock The built in clock can be speeded up or slowed down to improve accuracy. The

range of values is +/- 31. Each positive step increases the clock speed by

.068ppm, each negative step reduces it by 2.03 ppm. *TCF will put the clock

into frequency test mode and report the current calibration value. To enter a

new value send *TC+nn or *TC-nn where nn is a 2 digit number in the range

+/-31

*TR Read time Reports the current time & date in the form:YY/MM/DD hh:mm:ss(cr)

*TS Set time Set the clock to a new time and date. Enter in the form: *TSYYMMDDhhmmss

*U Programme units A label of up to 8 characters can be programmed to appear on the printout

following the displayed value. Follow the *U command by the required label,

terminated by carriage return if less than 8 characters. The label is then reported

back for confirmation.

5 Analogue output option

The analogue output, voltage or current, is proportional

to the indicated value. Fsout refers to the indicated value which results in a full scale

analogue value. eg. If the analogue output is 0-10V and the full scale value is set to 50.00, readings

of 50 or higher would give an output of 10V. Readings of 0 or less would give 0V out (Actual minimum

voltage out is typically 0.02V). To view the current full scale value press the 4 key. To change it press

the 4 key again. Use the 5 6 & 4 keys to set the value then press PROG. For current output see

5.1, for voltage 5.2

5.1 -20mA calibration

A mA output signal is generated. If necessary adjust the ZERO trimmer. Press 5or6

tto move on or PROG to return to step 5.

A 20mA output is generated. If necessary adjust the SPAN trimmer. Press 5or6 t to

repeat step 5.1 or PROG to return to step 5.

5.2 Voltage calibration

A 0V output is generated. No zero trim is required with the voltage out option. Check that

it is 0.025V or less. Press 5or6 t to move on or PROG to return to step 5.

A full scale output voltage is generated. This can be adjusted using the SPAN trimmer to

5V, 10V or any value between as required. Press 5or6 t to repeat step 5.1 or PROG

to return to step 5.

Suppression

When relays are used to switch an inductive load, such as a contactor, a solenoid or another relay, a

suppressor should be fitted across the coil. This will suppress the high voltage spike which would otherwise be

generated when the coil is de-energized. If not suppressed this can affect instruments in the vicinity, including

the SY035, and significantly reduce the life of the relay contacts. A varistor of the appropriate voltage, or a

capacitive suppressor can be used. The ideal way to connect power to the controller and the inductive load is

to use two separate power supply’s one to power the controller and one for the contactor, solenoid or relay, if

that isn’t possible source the controller and inductive load separately (Fig2).
