Minimum Fireplace Dimensions
The Montpelier Medium Insert will t most replaces. To
conrmthatitwilltyours,measurethelinteldepth,plusthe
height,width,anddepthofyourreplaceandhearth.Compare
themtothemeasurementsinthe accompanyingchart.If
youchoosetoinstallanewhearthoveranexistingreplace
hearth,besuretotakeitsthicknessintoconsiderationwhen
measuringbothfrontandbackheightofthereplaceand
clearancestoanyexistingtrimsandmantels.
The unit can be installed virtually ush with the replace
openingoritcanextend3"(76mm)ontothehearthusingthe
optional3"HearthExtensionKit.Figure3givesminimumand
maximumdimensionsforreplaceswhichwillaccommodate
theMontpelierMediumInsertintheushmountconguration
andusingtheoptionalextensionkit.
NOTE: TheclearancebetweentheMontpelierMediumInsert
andthemantel,toptrimandsidetrimcannotbereducedby
installingshields.
Anotherrequirementtoconsideristheclearanceformovable
itemssuchastables,bookcases,rugs,furnishings,andyour
woodbox.Allcombustiblematerialsofthistypeshouldbe
aminimumof48"(1220mm)fromthefrontsurfaceofthe
MontpelierMediumInsert.Besurethatfamilymembersare
awareofthisrequirementaswell,sotheytoowillkeepobjects
asafedistancefromtheMontpelierMediumInsert.
Beawarethatachimneyoriginallydesignedforreplaceuse
mayperformdifferentlywhenusedtoventanair-controlled
appliancesuchasyourMontpelierMediumInsert-evenif
theueislessthan3timeslargerthantheuecollar.For
example, a chimney on an outside wall may not heat up
enoughtosustainanadequatedraft.Suchauecanoften
beimprovedifitisrelinedtoreduceitssizeand/orinsulated
tokeepitwarmer.
• A positive ue connection must be made between the
Insert and the rst masonry tile or prefabricated metal
chimneysection.A positive ueconnection consists of
aplatethatsealsorreplacesthereplacedamperand
asectionofchimneyconnectorthatpassesthroughthe
plateintothechimney.
• Thechimneyconnectormustbeaminimumequivalentto
a6"(152mm)diameteropeningandmustbe24gaugeor
heavierstainlesssteel.Theconnectormustextendfour
(4)feetmeasuredfromthecollaroftheinsert.
ChimneyConnectionsystemsareavailablefromavariety
of manufacturers. Your Vermont Castings dealer can
recommendasystemthatwillbestmeettherequirements
ofyourparticularinstallation.
Sealing Requirements / U.S.
• Thechimneymustbesealedofffromroomair,eitherby
a plate at the damper level or by sealing the replace
opening.
• Unusedopeningstotheuemustbesealedwithmasonry
tothethicknessofthechimneywall.Openingssealed
withpieplatesorwallpaperareahazard.Intheeventof
achimneyre,amesandsmokemaybeforcedfromthe
openings.
Canada
In Canada (CAN/CSA-B365-M91, Section 5), if installed
in a masonry replace:
• Thisreplaceinsertmustbeinstalledwithacontinuous
chimneylinerof6"(152mm)diameterextendingfromthe
replaceinserttothetopofthechimney.Thechimney
linermustconformtotheClass3requirementsofCAN/
ULC-S635, Standard for Lining Systems for Existing
Masonry or Factory-Built Chimneys and Vents,orCAN/
ULC-S640,Standard for Lining Systems for New Masonry
Chimneys.
• Theopeningofthereplacearoundtheinsertmustbe
sealedtopreventroomairpassingtothereplacecavity.
• Existingair-circulationchambersinareplacewithasteel
linermaynotbeblocked.
• Provisionmustbemadeforremovaloftheinserttoclean
thechimneyue.
• Theexistingreplacedamper(ifany)shouldbelocked
intheopenposition.
