owner’s manual to help you understand and appreciate your machine. By taking a few
minutes to read this manual and understand the maintenance instructions, it will give
you better performance and extend the life of your machine. Read the entire manual
before operating the backhoe.

This Operator’s Manual is designed to help familiarize you with safety, assembly,
operation, adjustments, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Read this manual and
follow the recommendations to help ensure safe and efcient operation.

Safe Operation Tips
In addition to the design and conguration of equipment, hazard control and accident
prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence, and proper training of
personnel in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment. Lack of attention
to safety can result in accident, personal injury, reduction of efciency and, worst of all, loss
of life. Watch for safety hazards and correct deciencies promptly. Use the following safety
precautions as a general guide to safe operations when using this machine. Additional safety
precautions are used throughout this manual for specic operating and maintenance procedures.
Read this manual and review the safety precautions often until you know the limitations. Please
review the safety labels located in the back of this manual.
Tractor and/or Front End Loader Precautions:
• Read the tractor and/or loader operator’s manual to learn how to operate your tractor and/or
loader safely. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death and equipment damage.
• It is recommended that your tractor be equipped with Rollover Protective
System (ROPS) and a seat belt must be used for all loader operations. If your tractor is not
equipped with a front end loader, you must add wheel ballast or
front weight for stability.
• Move wheels to the tractor manufacture’s widest recommended settings to increase stability.
• For better stability, use tractor with wide front axle rather than tricycle front wheels.
• While the backhoe is attached to your tractor, move and turn the tractor at low speeds
(10 MPH maximum).
• Stop tractor engine, place transmission in park (or neutral), engage parking break, lower
loader arms to ground, cycle all hydraulic controls to relieve pressure, allow machine moving
parts to stop, remove ignition key to prevent any unauthorized person from starting engine
before dismounting tractor or serving, repairing, or making adjustments to the equipment.
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as, but not limited to, protection for eyes,
ears, lungs, head. hands and feet when operating, servicing, or repairing equipment. Avoid
wearing loose clothing or jewelry that may catch and entangle on equipment moving parts.

Backhoe Precautions:
• DO NOT operate the backhoe unless it is rigidly attached to the tractor.
• KNOW your controls. Read this operator’s manual and the manual provided with
your tractor. Learn how to stop the tractor, the engine and the backhoe quickly in an
emergency.
• PROVIDE adequate front end weight to counter-balance the backhoe at all times. 20% of
the total tractor, loader and backhoe weight must be on the tractor front axle. If unsure of
weight distribution, at a weight scale. Total vehicle weight, including backhoe and counter
weights, must not exceed the ROPS certicate for gross vehicle weight.
• BE SURE the area is clear of overhead or underground utilities or other hazards.
• POSITION a barricade around the work area.
• KEEP all bystanders a safe distance away.
• DO NOT attempt to enter operator’s platform backhoe by using the stabilizers as a step.
• OPERATE from the backhoe operator’s seat only.
• ALLOW only one person to operate the backhoe at any time.
•
REMOVE travel pins before attempting to operate the backhoe.
• NEVER dig with the backhoe unless the stabilizers are properly set.
•
DO NOT dig under stabilizers or tractor backhoe. Soft ground or sandy soil can cause cave-ins.
• KEEP BUCKET away from the stabilizer area to avoid possible stabilizer damage.
• ALWAYS swing bucket uphill to dump when on a hillside and keep loaded bucket low.
• SET BRAKES and block wheels when operating on hills and banks to avoid dangerous
runaway.
• WATCH for overhead wires. DO NOT touch wires with any part of the backhoe.
• NEVER allow a person to work under a raised bucket.
• NEVER lift a person with the backhoe.
• DO NOT use the backhoe as a battering ram. Use the backhoe only for digging.
• ALWAYS lower the backhoe bucket and stabilizers to the ground, shut off engine, and
apply the parking brake before getting off unit, or when not digging.
• NEVER leave the tractor unattended with the engine running.
• DO NOT attempt to raise the tractor off the ground or move the tractor forward or
backward using the backhoe dipper stick or bucket.
• Do not attempt to use the bucket as a tow hitch by attaching chains to the bucket and
driving the tractor forward to drag logs, stumps, etc.

Transportation
• Comply with state and local laws.
• ALWAYS engage safety locks and pins before transporting backhoe.
• DO NOT drive the tractor near the edge of a ditch or excavation.
• ALWAYS use accessory lights and devices when transporting on a road or highway
to warn operators of other vehicles. Check your local government regulations.
• Maximum transport speed for any WoodMaxx implement is 20 mph on paved
surface and 10 mph maximum on unpaved surface. Do not exceed. Never travel at
a speed which does not allow adequate control of steering and stopping. Rough
terrain requires a slower speed. Traveling at excessive speed on rough terrain that
causes violent shaking or bouncing of the implement will damage the attachment
point on the implement and/or the tractor. This type of damage is not covered
under warranty.
• Use the following maximum speed - for paved surfaces only:
• 20 mph when weight is less than or equal to the weight of tractor.
• 10 mph when weight is more than the weight of the tractor.

Adjustments and Inspection
• CHECK pins that attach backhoe to tractor and all pivot pins for tightness several
times daily, replace any parts that are bent, broken or missing.
• ALWAYS engage safety locks before servicing backhoe.
• DO NOT oil, grease, or adjust the backhoe while it is in motion.
For greasing, see Lubrication section on page 31 for details.
• DO NOT change any backhoe relief valve settings. They are factory set for best
backhoe performance and safety. The main relief valve is set to 16 MPA, 2310 PSI.
• PROTECT YOUR EYES - WEAR SAFETY GLASSES.
• GUARD AGAINST INJURY when driving connecting pins or performing any repair
in which particles can chip.
A Note to All Users
List of warnings and cautions cannot be all-inclusive. If situations occur that are not
covered by this manual, the operator must apply common sense and operate this

Tools you will need:
• Wrenches: 1/2”or 13mm,18mm,
3/4”, 15/16”, 1-1/4”
• Sockets: 30mm or 1-3/16”
• Alternatively, 2-cresent wrenches
will do the job as well,
but will take a bit longer.
• Pliers
• Safety glasses, Rags, funnel,
zip ties (2) 1/4” x 13”
• 5-7 gallons of hydraulic oil
(see the chart on page 22 for
proper oil viscosity for your region)
We have complied these instructions
meticulously and in the following
sequence for a reason. Follow the steps
exactly for an easy two hour installation.
If you attempt to“gure it out as you
go”, it will take a lot longer.
The backhoe comes packaged on a
wooden pallet as shown. Place the
backhoe in the shipping crate on a rm,
level surface for assembly. Be careful
when removing packaging, do not use
a box cutter or damage to the seat or
hydraulic lines can occur. Wear safety
glasses when working with hydraulic
lines.
Remove all of the components from
the crate. (optional hydraulic thumb
pictured) You will need the tools and
supplies listed for the assembly.

Prepare to install the support legs by removing
the two pins on either side of the base frame.
(pliers required to remove the cotter pins)
Pull the pins back until they are supported as
shown.
Remove the protective cap from the support
leg hydraulic cylinder hosettings.
Expand the hydraulic cylinder as shown.
This can be accomplished by standing on
the support foot and pulling upward on the
cylinder. Air and some residual oil will escape
from the cylinder ttings during this step,
this is normal. Cover the tting with a rag to
prevent spray. (wear safety glasses)
